  • So often I have told the story of the influence that my father and his jazz records had on my life as a singer, especially those records of the legendary Nancy Wilson. Well, this song is just another one of those beautiful songs that I first heard sung by Ms. Wilson on her 1962 “Yesterday’s Love Songs, Today’s Blues” album. Her rendition, backed by a beautiful jazz orchestra complete with horns and strings felt simply magical to me, the 5-year-old girl. Then, I could only dream of being her and singing the song on stage one day, not ever thinking it would really happen. Well, here I am-a dream come true! I’ve recently added this song to my repertoire and sung it on stage. I hope you enjoy!
A bit of history and trivia: The song “Someone to Watch Over Me” was written for a 1926 Broadway musical by Composer George Gershwin and Lyricist Ira Gershwin. This songwriting team of two brothers went on to write numerous hit songs that we now refer to as “American Standards”.
Did you know that this song was initially written by George Gershwin as a fast and jazzy up tempo rhythm tune? But in the 1930s and 40s - it was recorded by singers in a slower ballad form which remains the standard form to date. This song is known as one of the most popular ballads ever written with more than 1,800 recordings. Among these were Frank Sinatra who recorded the song in his very first album in 1946 called “The Voice of Frank Sinatra”, and again in the 1954 film “Young at Heart”. Sinatra’s popular recordings help to cement the standard slow style of the song. Ella Fitzgerald also recorded the song in 1950 and again in 1959; Sarah Vaughan (my other idol) in 1957; Barbara Streisand, Ray Charles, Elton John, and Linda Ronstadt to name just a few other notable singers who recorded this beautiful ballad. And then of course there was my favorite rendition as mentioned above-that of the late Nancy Wilson backed by the Gerald Wilson orchestra. Actually, Nancy and Sarah’s renditions run neck-and-neck for me as far as my favorites. Sarah Vaughan has an awesome rendition that I have viewed many times on TH-cam with her singing it live. All I can say about it is “Wow!”
As I sing this song, I dedicate it to my father the late George Hocker, and to the late great legend Nancy Wilson. I detail the many accomplishments of Ms. Wilson in my previous YT video in which I sing her rendition of “The Very Thought of You”. Here's the link: • The Very Thought Of Yo...
