I have a feeling you haven’t experienced too many other places in the USA. At least you’re happy though, all that matters. But if you’ve visited the rest country you might feel differently.
They are engine block heaters. They heat the lower engine and keep the oil in the oil pan warm so the engine turns over easy. I had one in a 1974 Pontiac with a 455 cid in Vermont when it used to get cold.
Adam, I want to let you know that you made my day. I support several properties in Alaska, but since I work remotely I've never been to any of them and usually only get to see them through old pictures we have on file. The building across from the gas station that you showed at the 10:20 mark, is one of my buildings. It was so nice to see it in as close to real life as I probably ever will. All of the videos in Alaska have been extra special for me because I've gotten to see a lot of areas that I help support and that my co-workers live in.
I first went to alaska 25 years ago. Ive been back 9 times since. It is the most beautiful, intimidating place in the world. I was hesitant to visit Barrow, but ended up loving it as much as every other part of the state. The people couldnt have been more welcoming and I cherish every day I spent there. Great video, it just came across my feed a little earlier so I thought I would check it out. Have a good holiday!
Calif here. I could not live in a place that's so expensive. Better have a really high paying job. Probably only the natives live here. I would sit in the lobby for a few hours to bide time till flight time. I kinda think that plug is to keep the battery from freezing overnight or it's to keep the engine warm. Been fun seeing Alaska, but not so much this city.
Hey Adam! The plug on the truck is a block heater. It heats the engine block to keep the oil from freezing or getting sludgy. Also, northern lights are higher in the sky, and typically look blue and green. Happy Travels!!

My ex lived in Alaska for a couple years. She was a social worker for the native population. She said the majority of crime that took place in the town where she lived was domestic violence and suicide. She also said that alcoholism is rampant in Alaska, I kind of see why.
Oddly enough Hawaii is a little like that with beers and meth. Many times flying back from Kauai I would be approached by women in the airport bar looking for free drinks. The women were flying back to Alaska. They would finish my glass without me knowing. their husband would sit next to them and happy not to pay. Ha. After a third time, if a cute girl took an interest next to me. I would lick the rim of my glass while they watched and cough.

I was born in Barrow. I guarantee if you had gone up a week earlier or another time of the year you would have had a different experience. A whale was caught I believe a week before you went up. And it is off season where not as much visitors go up so all they extra things people can do aren't available. I watched this video already, but I had to come back to it, shown this part to my co-worker since I seen him in it. He said he remembered you, and he said he had really wanted to ask you about your camera. He thought it was pretty cool. I was just over the moon mind blown that someone I know was so close to you and on the same plane! I love getting the chance to meet content creators that my husband and I enjoy watching for some years now. Of course it would be at the parks we see them. I'm still excited that you had come to visit my home state, and my husband was fluxomed finding out what flight you had gone back to Anchorage on, he works at the airport and he was working when we worked out when you got back in. To think he was close to possibly meeting you! Hope that isn't weird, but we are fans of watching you ever since your videos on the Jurassic World the ride opening. And we were so excited to see one of the planes for the airline he works for was shown in your video.
I was born in Kodiak and the two places couldn't be more different, hard to believe they're even in the same state. Barrow is definitely a bucket list trip for me.
Because of your videos, another TH-camrs video popped up who was just in this same town a couple weeks ago at the end of October, and it is amazing the difference a couple weeks makes. When they were there, the ocean was raging with huge waves and it seemed like there were people everywhere. Then a couple weeks later you show up and it seems like a ghost town with hardly any sunlight and a dead calm frozen ocean. I just found that very interesting.
I like seeing all of the behind the scenes stuff- like waiting in the "heated igloo" and having that weird in between time dropping your car off and a flight. I echo everyone else's comments that this is one of your best series, I really enjoy exploring with you!

Considering I've seen enough snow to last a lifetime in Michigan over my lifetime, all of Alaska would be miserable to me. I just don't go cold places or places with snow as it's physically painful. But, glad you had a chance to visit as it was on your bucket list.
Thank you Adam! This has been pretty cool to watch. I have always been curious what it’s like in Alaska and now I have had the pleasure of seeing it through the eyes of your camera. Thank you! I have enjoyed this a lot!
Yahoo ,what a trip. So glad you were able to go. A lifetime of memories . Happy to have you share your adventure with us. A little rest and off we go again !✈️🚢
My dad is currently working as a teacher in a village very close to Barrow. He was just staying at the same hotel as you back in July during orientation! In 2013 I lived with him for a short amount of time in Anaktuvuk Pass, and visited a few of the same places in Fairbanks that you did! Enjoying this series, it's bringing me back!!
The cars have block heaters probably. Plugging them in makes it much easier to start in extreme cold weather. I learned this when my dad drove semi back in the late 70's early 80's.
8 degrees is not cold in Utqiagvik-lived in and liked it very much. The schools offer 10xs the activities and programs that my kids had afterward, and there is much to recommend it, though few that you will see on a short trip. If you want to get a real look, it would be best to have/know a local (Inupiaq) host. It is a small community and everyone knows everyone. My husband summed it up, “In one trip to AC/Stuakpak (supermarket) , I say hello to more people than I have in my (major city) hometown in 20 years. “
We always had block heaters in Idaho for the below zero nights in Winter. It is funny how we take it for granted the things we have to do in diff. parts of the world. Thanks for letting us come along!
Just an amazing vlog!!! I find it fascinating there and the fact you got to explore it!!! INCREDIBLE!!! 🎉🎉🎉 thank you for showing it and discovering it with all of us!
Celebration seems a very, very long way away lol. Your trip to Barrow has been fascinating to watch, but it’s a place I’d never want to visit myself. Too cold. Too dark. And too remote. It really does seem to be at the end of the earth. Thank you for going so that I don’t have to.
For those whose day is incomplete without it: That's gonna do it for today. I left the northern most city in the U.S. and now I'm just very north of Orlando. That was quite a one-time experience. Thanks for watching. I'll see you in the next video, the vlog is...still haven't seen a polar bear yet...over
I am so relieved that you are back in Anchorage. I was a nervous wreck. Polar bears; viscous moose…..icy roads; deep snow drifts. Thank goodness you escaped.
I grew up in Minnesota where we had many days in January that the temperature never got above 0 but we had bright sun. Barrow is just so dreary. Thank you for a great travel series.
This has been a great series of videos. I grew up in a place where it's 60 degrees and cloudy most of the year. We hit 100 degrees a week or two a year. Also it rarely snows. To me places like Alaska or Death Valley feel like another planet.
@@Sir......Lol.. It’s not a new name.. The town of Barrow was originally known by its native name of Utqiaġvik until 1901, when the non-native population of the region decided to rename it after nearby Point Barrow, the northernmost point in the United States, because it was easier for them to pronounce… Learn a little history, please..!
Those plugs are for a device called a "block heater". It is supposed to keep the engine block warm so it will start easier. Very common in more northern area, including parts of Canada.
That "igloo looking" house is actually an architectural marvel known as the geodesic dome as introduced by Buckminster Fuller. Incredible that one exists there, very interesting. Great (if miserable) trip. 😊
Seems like a kinda insulting title to the fine people there. I've watched a lot of videos from there, including hunting and fishing and generally living mostly off the land there. The families are tight knit, neighbors help each other. People hunt and fish in grueling conditions. I have a lot of respect for them. That would be a dream trip for me, but of course I'd go when the other tourists go. July. :)
How can you know the people there are fine? You've never been there, never met them. Go on that dream trip yourself and post your own videos about how amazing you think the place is, instead of getting triggered about someone else's opinion because your lazy bum has watched other travellers and decided to white knight for this place you'll never actually visit? He's not disrespectful to the locals, he barely even mentions the people. He's just offering his perfectly reasonable impressions on the place. May I remind you that Akaska has the third highest suicide rate not only in the US, but in the world. I don't know about others, but if I had to move to a tiny remote town, barely seeing any sunlight for half a year, having to watch my back for polar bears, and surrounded by pretty much nothing but snow, I'd be losing my mind too.
Omg that's funny you watched 30 Days of Night, I was thinking about it while watching your videos. Love that movie lol I just want to thank you for making these videos. It's helped me get out of my rut. Nothing but love for you bro.
For the Northern Lights - The strongest lights tend to appear between 9pm and 2am, though the best sightings often occur between 11pm and midnight. And, the plug in isn't to keep the battery charged, it's for the block heater which warms the engine's coolant, oil, and other internal components.
In Fairbanks we plugged the car in to keep the engine's oil warm, and there was also an electric battery blanket wrapped around the battery to keep it warm.
Adam,I’m glad you made it to Barrow. We get to see a place that most won’t see! It’s such a fun time for us as well to see where you go next! Exciting vlogs😄
Thank you deeply for this whole trip Adam, it’s been so amazing to watch and i salute and admire you for doing this all while giving us the content we we look forward to every single day
Genuinely been enjoying your videos of Alaska, especially Barrow, not that I've ever thought of seriously going to either place myself but seeing your experience there and especially going off-season it is the kind of place that I think I would enjoy seeing. Thank you for being as brave and adventurous as you are and for doing things that most of us will probably never get a chance to do.
I hate the cold. I live in Cleveland and its been in the 20's, I can't go anywhere thats colder than that! Its great to see the town of Barrow though, appreciate the video. I don't think the people of Barrow will appreciate the title though!
Definitely a harsher way of life then some. We live in North Pole which is farther south then Barrow but we get to enjoy much of the same temps, high cost of goods and the lovely aurora borealis. I haven't seen it much this winter so far. Needs to be colder and clearer :)
Hey Adam! The truck's plug is a block heater. It heats the engine block to keep the oil from freezing or getting sludgy. Also, the northern lights are higher in the sky and typically look blue and green. Happy Travels!! ✈
It sure is a place to live where attitude is gratitude. I don’t like the cold. I am so glad to witness yu Adam in top of the world❤❤❤ And u are “OFF” the ground of Barrow🙏🙏
From a longtime Alaskan that art work on the purple door is a piece of Baleen from a mouth of a Baleen Whale. And I think they call it oot kee aag vuhk Utqiagvik They are changing all the names back to original names, But they are totally different from when I grew up, so I can’t spell or say them either. Quite a difference from Celebration. I used to fly all over Alaska in my bush flying days.
I can’t understand the why of people living in Barrow. I looked it up, it’s 41 average in the summertime. You are incredible for taking us along on this journey that we are all loving so very much.
I hate the cold and snow but your trip has made me want to go. I think this series has been your best in years. If I’m being honest, the constant Disney stuff was making me drift away but this series is classic Woo and what I feel you are the best at. Looks like a neat place to visit but I couldn’t imagine living there. I wonder if the pay somehow makes up for it. How do they afford to live?
Adam, welcome back from 'Ice Station Zebra' or maybe the 'Frozen Planet'. Kind of surprised there wasn't a Polar Bear at the beginning of the runway waving goodbye while holding a sign that said: "Thank you for visiting Utqiagvik (Barrow), we hope to see you again real soon, love Snowball"
The plug is from the block heater. It keeps the engine warm at night so it will start in the morning. I had to put one in my Pinto back in the early eighties when I lived in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire. White River Junction area of Vermont and Hanover NH.
This has been one of your best series, and you leveled up the adventure with this trip to Barrow! Love the sound of crunching snow as you walk and drive around the area.
I live in the Midwest and in the winter we can get some arctic air and snow……it’s crazy. Sometimes Barrow is oddly warmer! But I get why it’s miserable……we get a tiny taste in the winter and I just want to fly out of this state! it is definitely hard to take even in a warm house!! Nothing like Florida and California when it comes to the best weather! You had a grest experience of a life time!
Definitely a Clark Griswold moment trying to speak in the freezing cold Adam lol, been a fantastic experience for you, and a great series to watch, not over yet though x
The plug is to keep the engine block warm so that the coolant doesn't freeze inside. Surprised the rental agency didn't explain that. They can't expect a tourist to know that.
What an insane visit. I LOVED this. Crazy.
I would love to visit but not live there. This is interesting.
I live here -
Yes the conditions are extreme, but I love the people and the community 😊
How is the gold up in Barrow compared to Nome?
How does the cost of living impact life and are you compensated accordingly from your employer?
Not being critical, just genuinely curious - why? What is there to do for work aside from the restraunt(s) and stores up there?
It looks beautiful. ❤
I have a feeling you haven’t experienced too many other places in the USA. At least you’re happy though, all that matters. But if you’ve visited the rest country you might feel differently.

Glad Im not the only one who noticed 😅 Hope he's doing okay.
I have really enjoyed seeing Alaska thru your lens. What a fascinating place! Thank you!! Safe travels
I am so relieved that you are back in Anchorage. I was a nervous wreck. Polar bears; viscous moose…..icy roads; deep snow drifts. Thank goodness you escaped.
Beautiful sights of Northern Alaska Adam !
Good bye Barrow! Thanks for taking us Adam !Fun Trip !
I grew up in Minnesota where we had many days in January that the temperature never got above 0 but we had bright sun. Barrow is just so dreary. Thank you for a great travel series.
@kayclark4406 Same here. Way up near Ontario border! Brrr!
This has been a great series of videos. I grew up in a place where it's 60 degrees and cloudy most of the year. We hit 100 degrees a week or two a year. Also it rarely snows. To me places like Alaska or Death Valley feel like another planet.
Watching from my work desk. Great to hear everyone calls the town Barrow.
why is that 'great'
@@JohnWickerman-u7j .... because thats their hometown name..... how often to towns abruptly get a new name? .....
1:54 mark, that is a block heater to keep oil warm for cold starting because the oil will get thick and not want to flow.
Those plugs are for a device called a "block heater". It is supposed to keep the engine block warm so it will start easier. Very common in more northern area, including parts of Canada.
I’m amazed how light you travel. Have you ever done a video on what you pack and how often you have to do laundry on your trips?
And yes... Thanks for the video Adam! Great to enjoy your "Chill" experience from the comforts of my warm bed!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!! 😂
July. :)
Never said I didn’t respect the residents. I still stand by the fact that it’s the most depressing place I’ve been so far.
It’s his opinion! He’s entitled to it! Everybody thinks different… it’s ok!!
Especially when you’re from sunny SoCal!
@@originalmamagrizzly2478it’s rude. And yes he can totally do it.
Thank you deeply for this whole trip Adam, it’s been so amazing to watch and i salute and admire you for doing this all while giving us the content we we look forward to every single day
These videos are amazing Adam! My birthday was 11/14 & you made my day extra special! ♡
Happiest Birthday Yet!🥳
Beautiful sunrise, safe, and blessed travels . 😊
You are a brave man Adam going out in that cold with your parka open enjoyed watching your experience
I hate the cold. I live in Cleveland and its been in the 20's, I can't go anywhere thats colder than that! Its great to see the town of Barrow though, appreciate the video. I don't think the people of Barrow will appreciate the title though!
Big Congrats Adam on THIS!! Ill assume you'll never go back again 😜..Hello from Gatlinburg TN Smoky Mountains Park 🏞️🌄
OMG! I first met my husband in Barrow (bare-row) back in the eighties. So exciting to see you there.
There are so many beautiful views in Alaska..but the darkness would take some getting used do.
It sure is a place to live where attitude is gratitude. I don’t like the cold. I am so glad to witness yu Adam in top of the world❤❤❤
And u are “OFF” the ground of Barrow🙏🙏
At first I was jealous! Now I'm glad you went there so I dont have to!
From a longtime Alaskan that art work on the purple door is a piece of Baleen from a mouth of a Baleen Whale.
And I think they call it
oot kee aag vuhk
Utqiagvik
They are changing all the names back to original names,
But they are totally different from when I grew up, so I can’t spell or say them either. Quite a difference from Celebration.
I used to fly all over Alaska in my bush flying days.
The plug-in is for a engine block warmer to keep the engines warm in easier to start in cold conditions
Understand . I’ll do my best to mix things up like this more from here on out
@@TheDailyWooAdam, the best for you and your channel is yet to come! Looking forward to 2025!
"Airport completed in March 1998" ... so they built it in the winter. I guess it was mainly built in the dark ! And _still_ won an award. Not bad !
The INSIDE was completed over winter.
This is a cute idea
Reminds me of all the things I have to be Thankful and grateful for.
I visited Barrow in September 2023 and had a great time. The people were awesome and to visit the top of the world was a dream come true.
I’m glad you’re back to Anchorage.😊
Same here
Definitely a Clark Griswold moment trying to speak in the freezing cold Adam lol, been a fantastic experience for you, and a great series to watch, not over yet though x
The plug is to keep the engine block warm so that the coolant doesn't freeze inside. Surprised the rental agency didn't explain that. They can't expect a tourist to know that.
This was AMAZING. Thanks for sharing all this with us all. I know I would never be there. Take care.
