    Thats what I love about dutch infrastructure. Its so easy even a small child knows what sharks teeth mean. Yet you still get people that think the rules don't apply to them. I had a woman on a bike curse at me on my bike for not giving her the right of way. You are standing on the f-ing sharks teeth....discussion over. No need for road rage...you just point to her feet and go "sharks teeth" with a look of "fuck you" on your face. It can't get clearer than that.

      Maaike R It really depends though. Actually according to European law, which overrides the Dutch law. All roundabouts should give right of way to pedestrians and cyclist over cars. In reality the (road)signs for this are often missing and drivers think they have right of way. That's not to say there are not a lot of cyclists/pedestrians that have half a brain.

      Vailliant, you may want to read up on art 54 RVV. That covers the priority situation with regard to entering and exiting roundabouts.
      What you're misunderstanding, is that when the cyclepath and footpath are separated from the roadway by a median of any kind, they are technically no longer part of the roundabout. The roadway is the roundabout and the cyclepath is the cyclepath.
      Meaning the planner who designed the roundabout gets to put in the priority situation that they want.

    I love the American system of stop signs (first come first serve) and passing on the right on the freeway/highway/interstate!! :)

    Yep, that's how The Netherlands works: first you spend a long time in the books learning Ze Rulez, you take an exam, get a diploma or license... and then you spend the rest of your life trying to figure out how things really work.

    Really hate it when people dont signal on the roundabout. Talking about both cars and bycicles.

    The reason cyclists know the rules us because there us a 'traffic exam' in 'groep7' and 'groep 8' with a theory and a practical exam, and you have traffic lessons since 'groep 4'

    • @m__6930
      @m__6930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's not true. I only had one year of traffic lesson and that was the year I did traffic exam on bike. Just because it happened at your school one way it doesn't work like that at all schools lol.

      knowing rules is one thing. It would be a blessing if cyclists would actually hold to them, cause THAT is the problem in dutch traffic. mainly school-going youth.. cycling 3 wide beside eachother. crossing intersections without looking left or right. Earplugs with music on so they are perfectly NOT aware of their surroundings.

    Sometimes streets have another name on side side than on the other. In some towns it's even worse. Sometimes one side of the road is in another country than the other side...

  • @Rightclick88
    @Rightclick88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just wondering... Are you allowed to drive manual cars over here?

    • @Jan-vc1qg
      @Jan-vc1qg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      90% is manual in the Netherlands.
      If you have trouble with manual,you can have an automatic license.

    • @Rightclick88
      @Rightclick88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I know, but as far as I know, in the US there's no difference between a licence for manual or automatic. But over here, there is.
      So, I was just wondering if he has got a Dutch licence for automatics only, or a regular one.

    • @gregshapiro
      @gregshapiro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YES - I learned on a stick shift.

    • @Rightclick88
      @Rightclick88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thought so, because of the way driving lessons are offered here.
      Most of us go for stick, unless you're physically unable to drive stick, or mentally unable to drive a car, then you're offered to try automatic.
      But, there are lots of driving schools here that don't even offer lessons in an automatic.
      Thanks for sharing!

    Unlike NZ driving where you just need to be aware of bad drivers

    theory vs. practice, context matters. When we use a word, the Dutch try to get the meaning instead of filling it in for themselves. That is why, in context, theory is the opposite of 'in practice' in this case, which makes perfect sense. It's a laugh because it's unexpected and it gets lost in translation. Shall we open the registers on what else gets lost in translation, but for the English language? I'm not offended, but i've come to hate the willfull misinterpretation antics of certain groups of people and therefor making a joke using the same antics is just not funny to me. Keep on joking, otherwise than this instance i like ya ;p

      When i don't laugh at a joke because it's a crappy joke, be glad i at least explain why through some constructive criticism, or don't bother, don't waste your time if you're not open to that.

      *"i've come to hate the willfull misinterpretation antics of certain groups of people and therefor making a joke using the same antics is just not funny to me"*
      A huge amount of comedy is based on wilful misinterpretation, dismissing all of that because shitty people use wilful misinterpretation as a weapon in politics is a bit silly, don't you think?

  • @TheRealTricky

    He makes it sound like only a few very good pupils in driving school could ever get a driving license.
    Why do I never see the evidence of that when I'm on the road? :P
    Then again the rules are simple: "BOEM is HO!" (BOOM means STOP) "PLONS is water" (SPLASH is water), "Krak zijn bosjes" ("CRACK means bushes") en "Rinkeldekinkel is glas" (And 'rinkeldekinkel' or whatever variant you may have for that one in English means glass) and "Een hele tijd niets is een ravijn" (and a whole time nothing at all means a ravine). It's pretty easy.
    The name "snelweg" (lit. fast way) just came from a sense of sarcasm and the brake is only there for show. It ain't that hard! :-P

      He is Greg Shapiro and he was reasonably well known in Murica before he met a Dutch woman and emigrated to the Netherlands. He is not so well known in the Netherlands as he still speaks English on stage (although he can talk Dutch quite well by now).

    Given all the trouble you have to go through to get your license over here, it sure feels like some people forget about the rules as soon as they get their driver's license and start driving like maniacs...

    In the Netherlands you have to buy you're license and the stupid thing is you have to go through a driving school but they allow you to drive before you even know basic driving laws

    • @tankimarkgraaf
      @tankimarkgraaf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With an instructor thats able to do anything a driver could except (partly) steering

    • @marjan6008
      @marjan6008 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      every driver knows the basic rules. With driving lessons you learn how to drive not just the rules. You know how to use your mirrors. How to look when you change lanes etc. etc etc

    • @J0k394
      @J0k394 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't know what driving school you went to but if your teacher doesn't think you know basic road rules (the kind that are taught in PRIMARY school) he will not let you drive. And the teachers controls overrule yours so you're not really driving.

    • @TheSmokeroo
      @TheSmokeroo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      J0k394 what I mean in other countries you get a learners so you know the basic road rules in the Netherlands they have you drive before any basic theory

    • @J0k394
      @J0k394 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You shouldn't have to learn basic theory by age 18. You should know it by age 10. There's not that much difference between car road rules and bicycle road rules, you know...
      And yes in other countries you get a learners permit. With which you're sent on the road with a non-professional teacher who has no brake pedal (so no way of preventing you from getting into accidents).

  • @CharlesvanDijk-ir6bl
    @CharlesvanDijk-ir6bl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I must say after driving in the US for 2 months it is actually based on pure common sense. If your wipers are on because it is raining you switch your headlights on. First person at an intersection if all things are equal he or she has the right of way. You always let somebody know what you're doing, that's the function of your indicators. Let them merge if they indicate it is just the way of saying excuse me.
