Recently moved to Burlington in October from south Texas. It’s a bit odd to me how there’s *maybe* 100 homeless people in this town total and it’s an EPIDEMIC. Not trying to diminish the severity of the situation here but there’s probably more homeless people in the city of Austin than there are full time residents of Burlington. The factors causing homelessness don’t just affect the unhoused, they affect us all. A rising supply of housing inventory and better access to services would benefit everyone in Burlington across the board to the point where even the guy running that account realizes it
EXACTLY! People love to complain and it just shows they have never been anywhere else. I'm not saying any level of homelessness without proper assistance and care is acceptable, but I am saying people act like the state is falling apart when we do a much better job than most.
I think it’s because we are small so the problem is way more concentrated downtown. It’s definitely a new sight for a lot of native Vermonters so I get how it’s a strange thing to freak out about. But I agree with you
Oh wow it’s bad other places. So what exactly? We can’t house these people. We can’t help these people. State made sure to crush any housing plans and closed all mental health facilities down long long ago.
It’s because there used to only be a handful that were highly visible. They used to only have a few intersections they’d hang out at. Now homeless are starting to be seen more places and people don’t like that. They also used to be a lot less aggressive and confrontational.
As a recent former Champlain student, the real problem is the lack of care, (affordable) housing and aggression against the homeless, especially when they tore down the camp that housed so many. Then they have the audacity to complain about the issue they caused and not do anything about it. They need real help, spare change won't do that.
Not to mention the now dead Covid-era program that posted up so many of our houseless folks in unused hotel rooms. I feel like that program helped in so many ways and the second that ended Burlington streets were flooded with folks w/ nowhere to go, still very much needing help that was given to them for 2 years and promptly ripped out from under them.
That camp was around for more than a decade and no one bothered with it. It was torn down because a few methheads moved in and started causing trouble for the whole neighborhood.
The guy running that instagram is the type to complain that the homeless "make them uncomfortable" without recognizing that being unhoused is literally one of the most uncomfortable experiences possible.
Then they should leave. Things Burlington Vermont. There is no housing for them in the entire state. There will be housing for them for years and years to come. We can not house our fucking elderly and you want us to house addicts and criminals? What is wrong with you?
Alright but it seems they’re pretty comfortable with making everyone else uncomfortable, I don’t think being aggressive and/or confrontational and/or nodding out in public is a requirement to not being housed
You may be misunderstanding that it is important to bring awareness to how trashed Burlington has become! We should not be allowing people to live this way In our streets it’s not ok for them or regular civilians! These people don’t get told how to live and how to behave and believe it or not that hurts them!!! We should be talking about this problem not only in public forums but with the people living on the streets! I have spent a small amount of time doing just this and find it to be effective! The homeless are usually respectful of the cleanup process and sometimes even take part in cleaning up their mess! But it takes initiative to create this drive as they are not proud of this and feel no one cares so why should they! If all of us spent a little time working with them or even letting them see us cleanup the streets we would have a much safer and healthier community! If it wasn’t the cool thing to do to turn a blind eye to the drug use and littering we would not be In this position! We need a culture change! The last 5 years is not working! Time for a change as a people! Take some pride in your state and your hometown! Help your neighbors they are literally shitting in the streets! VT is still as VT as it gets because it is VT and Burlington is as VT a city as it gets. If VT itself was a city it would be the 26th largest after Boston. What's not rad about Burlington is the housing prices and how we are treating the homeless, but what other city is like it? None.
@@802Garage No, it’s not. I’ve lived here long enough to see that first hand. Vermont has become a selfish and ridiculous state and it wasn’t life long residents who made it that way.

Yeah, I know real cities are worse that's why I don't go there. And Burlington being terrible is why I don't go there much anymore either.
Welcome to late stage capitalism I guess.
Appreciate you at least recognizing there are harmful and helpful ways to speak. Only part I take issue with is Burlington being terrible. Of course it could use work and improvement, but I'm downtown almost every weekend and it's beautiful, safe, fun, and pretty clean. I have to look for the bad to find any.
@802Garage the kids love church street and it's always the stench of pot or worse smells. I have had them ask about needles they see and it's just something you never saw at all 20 years ago.
@@trevorchadwick7649 I smell pot occasionally yeah. That's a feature of every city in my experience. I personally have seen needles maybe once, but that's also sadly a nationwide issue. It's still a lot more rare in Burlington than many places. I dunno, it needs improvement, of course, but to say it sucks is kinda wild to me that's all. Not trying to completely dismiss you or anything. I def understand the concern for your kids.
idk if im insane for this but the trash issue, is that not something that one guy in one day could fix for free with a broom and trash bags?
@@homarslamson I believe there is a city clean up team but since the houseless are so many atm I assume that it’s hard to keep up with. I intended to research this and get a true answer

Sad to say I gave the 421st upvote.

Off topic, how do I get invited to the card game?

I see this shit a lot about California, specifically Sacramento where rage bait accounts skew a frame to make it look like it’s going to shit for fame, as Sacramento still being far from dangerous or ugly. Just wanna boost your channel a bit to get the word across
Been hearing about this happening all over the country a lot today. I appreciate the insight!!

Let’s be honest, Burlington hasn’t been VT for like 30+ years. Hell, VT isn’t really VT anymore either.
Sarah hs kinda lost her mind though. I liked her better when she played hockey and smoked weed. A
VT is still as VT as it gets because it is VT and Burlington is as VT a city as it gets.
@@danlepine9761 It's funny cuz half of people who say it's ruined say it's because specialists want to give everything away and nobody has to work and half of people say it's because everyone is selfish and overcharging for everything. I think it's still pretty rad and I've been all over the country.
@@802Garage Maybe it’s because you haven’t lived here your whole life dealing with with consequences of the poor decision making and irresponsible behavior. I would think VT was pretty cool too If I spent most of my time away from it. Half of the people who say this place is pretty rad are only doing so because they’ve adopted VT with there personal identity so to acknowledge that the state is not in fact rad would contradict there beliefs about themselves.
The fact is Vermont has become a joke state of transplants who have no values or sense of community.
@@danlepine9761 I have lived here my whole life though. Oops.
I feel like you went out of your way to make the guy look bad. Sara George has definitely instituted policies which have led to more crime, but it's not easy to name them off the top of one's head.
i think you missed the irony of me 'making him look bad', aka the whole 20 second disclaimer before the interview, leaving it up to YOU to question my motives as much as questioning his. what framing is accurate? both? none? more of an exercise and lesson on media literacy at both of our expenses. my goal is not to win you to my side, but question WHAT you are watching from him.
also with SG, still have not given any opinion on her yet in these videos. the point of me asking him about sarah was not to defend anything about her, but to show how uneducated he is on his talking points about her and other things. as for not being able to name the specific policy, google is right there my friend.
@@JonnyWanzer OMG you think there's an online list of Sarah George's bad policies? You are fucking dumb, my dude.
