I first met Ronald in Del City OK in the early 80’s. We became closer friends when I was in my first year of college. I encouraged Ronald to audition for the flaming lips. In a nutshell Ronald quit The Flaming Lips because he didn’t want to be in a band with a junkie and Wayne wasn’t addressing Steven’s drug addiction. Steven is an incredible musician and I’m glad that he was able to beat his addiction. Ronald was the most musically talented person I’ve ever met in my entire life.
He is still my favorite guitarist. I have attempted to emulate his style for… I don’t even remember how long at this point and he is unreproduceable. I hope he is well and happy, content in the knowledge that people like me will never, ever be able to understand what he was doing no matter how much we try, haha. Amazing talent.
@@agentanaranjado To this day I still try and emulate some of the things he did. I was finally able to get something close to the intro of Mountainside
Excuse my assumption on his background but I've always wondered if he was Native American the band being from OK and all. Does anybody know? The Lips were the best with him.
Teds' a good friend of mine. He is the best one armed guitar player in the world. Captain Eyeball would be a great opening band for the Lips. I was kicking it with Ronald back when this was going on. He came over to my house shortly after quitting the Lips and I know why he quit. He told me, we talked about it. Out of respect for him, however, I will leave it at that. I will say, though, that the reasons given in this vid are on the right track.
Clouds Taste Metallic is just a superb album.I think Wayne is covering for Steven here.Steven was wanting to mention the drugs but Wayne purposely sidetracked.
He brought some amazing texture and unpredictability to the band that I love. The music was so whimsical and fun in that era and yes they were never the same after.
Whatever the case.. FTR -Being 6’ away from Ronald Jones, live (Houston-96’), is a memory the doctors can use to bring me back, if ever needed or desired. (Just use this post as legal proof) 🤯

Epic piece Owen.... 🔥👏🏻 Again there are even more details that are covered in the book- staring at sound, concerning his erratic behavior... And then... Well... I guess my own story I shared with you. 😒
@@chetsenior7253 well no... Since he wasn’t personally interviewed. But accounts being recollected by band members is what’s being recorded, statement wise. The various possibilities, reasons why he left. The more detailed aspect of what Wayne is kind of mentioning… I too can attest to personally. Not a dig on lovely Jones… just a truthful experience. I don’t know if that’s what you were referring to mainly in your comment, but if you are, then that’s what I’m conveying to Owen here. 👍🏻
@@chetsenior7253 - also, do you have a Ronald account, in defense, or contrary to the various mentioning. I don’t ask in defense… only if there’s recorded material from Ron’s side of things. Unless you’re a friend of his which would be equally cool.
And the other footage in this I’ve never seen before? It looks like you found the rest of that pro shot UK video that aired on MTV? I must see this stuff lol!
The Commodore footage is from Wayne and Steven's appearance on the ITV show "The New Music", they showed bits and pieces throughout their interview. Search "flaming lips the new music 1995" and you'll find it, it's been on YT for 6 years but only has 40 views. The pro-shot seems to be from Germany, there is no full show unfortunately, only the Jelly performance and parts of Mountain Side through Wayne's interview, it got put on YT recently and is titled "The Flaming Lips: if your intention ist to become millionaire, you wouldn't play Flaming Lips!" I would link the videos, but TH-cam has a tendency to auto-block comments with links.

@@DoctorWhomThe1st mountain side isn’t even ronald on guitar, he didn’t join the band until 93. mountain side is wayne and johnathan donahue on guitar
I knew his parents. I used to mow their grass when I was 12. His dad was pretty cool and always bragged about Ronald.

the best era of the flaming lips.
I don't know, soft bulletin, mystics... Those albums couldn't exist if Ronald hadn't left. Soft bulletin is an absolute psychedelic masterpiece

A great under rated guitarist of the 90s. One of the best shows ill ever see
Once Ron Jones left, The Lips were never the same unfortunately.

I personally prefer the post Ronald material. But it certainly was different
Thanks for sharing this, I've never heard this before
I miss the 90s.... waaah

Yeah, I'm going to have a look to see if I can buy a digital copy, seems like it's a good read.
None of which are Ronald’s account though.

@@thesatellitehead I think that ITV one must be region locked, as I cannot find it anywhere :(.
Oh, that's odd. I guess that'd explain why it has so few views. I'll upload it to a Google drive or something and email it to you.
Edit: Done
and when i think of ronalds music post lips i sit in silence
Wayne, don’t try to be a TH-cam doctor.
bring back ronald or we boycott the flaming lips.
Great idea....seriously
Lmao go ahead, i dont think many will be following you.
he left because he wanted to. why do you want him to do something he doesnt enjoy
