Thanks! I miss making the videos as much as doing the hikes. Should be interesting to see where the path leads from here but I have been taking notes as I watch other videos about what I want to improve.
I enjoy car camping and also enjoy grilling over the campground fire rings. I have a stainless grate from an old gas grill that I bring along because those grates at the fire rings often have large gaps between the individual grates. I lay it over the other one and I never have to worry about food falling through. You can't beat steaks and foil-pack roasted potatoes. I hope you are able to enjoy the outdoors while you heal up.
Thanks. Yes, I like the grate as an upgrade on the fire ring. I never thought of charcoal before either since my memory of it is not positive (the kind with lighter fluid build into it). But I am learning about different ways of doing things between the fire ring, a charcoal grill, and other varieties of stoves, etc. Cooking outside is very interesting.
Update as of August 1. I continue to do physical therapy twice a week: (electro stimulation, massage, stretches, exercises). I am sorting my gear and working out my next outing, which will be by mid August or sooner. This sort of thing makes you spend a lot of time thinking and I've missed making videos!
I've been meaning to try the bigger setup like Korean camping but it's not happening for me. I like to buy good gear but I seem to be a minimalist once I arrive to the wilderness. At least I have been working on my cooking!
It's great to see you again - I've missed your videos! So sorry you injured your knee but taking it slow will allow you to heal fully. I'm excited for your next adventure - in the back yard or wherever! 🙂
Sorry to hear about your knee. I had a torn meniscus diagnosed over the winter and had minor surgery back in March. Now I'm running and hiking again. I wish you a speedy recovery!
Yes, it sure was encouraging seeing your recent videos where you looked incredibly strong! I know you said your recovery leg is still weaker than the other. But you look like a super hero compared to my limpy status. No hot yoga for me, however. Been there - done that. One day my appreciation for it evaporated and I cannot return. So physical therapy exercises it shall be I guess. Thanks for checking in!
Thanks for the update as I have missed your adventures you share. Take it easy and continue to make progress. Your garden is gorgeous and so is Millie.
Thanks for the update. Was thinking of you last week while staying at Dolly Copp and fishing the many streams in that area. Keep up with the PT and hit it hard it really pays off.
I am so sorry that you had that injury that stopped your hiking. I've been there and hated every minute of having to stop what I wanted to do. This will pass and hopefully you'll be able to get back to the woods. Be kind to yourself 😊
Thanks. Yes, it is hard to fully accept the situation, which also keeps changing. But of course if I just take it carefully, the entire experience will play out and become a memory to my future strong self.
So that's what you've been up to. I recently checked to see if I had missed one of your videos. Glad you're on the mend. Fall is so much nicer for hiking anyway. Take care!
Yes on Fall. 😆🍁 Today we had to clean a trash can incident so I reached for a candle to help with the smell and all we had were fall candles (which I haven't used in a year). As soon as that pumpkin spice hit the air I felt transported to a future wonderland of cool air and all the treats of autumn. By then I will be able to do some easy trails at least, perhaps around a campground somewhere. Thanks for checking in!
Glad to hear that you won’t need surgery. May you have a speedy recovery and enjoy your beautiful garden. The mountains will still be there, if you choose to go back. Car camping is fun, too, especially with all the luxury items that you would never backpack with. I look forward to seeing your next adventure, whatever it might be.
Thanks, Laura! I often think of you guys out there, blazing the trails. And your videos make it look doable even if I can't go the same distance. Today I was putting backpacking gear in the basement and giving those shelf spaces to car camping gear. And I know it will be fun - but I know I'm not finished with backpacking! So we'll just let nature lead the timeline. 😌
Good to have you back and thanks for all the updates. Glad that you do not have to undergo surgery 👍 Hope your therapy and home remedies speeds up the r recovery process. Camping sounds very cool for a soft start. And you are always so good at doing out the outdoor things 👍. Mean while, enjoy your time. Your beautiful garden is lushed with various different plants and flowers 👍. So nicely are they maintained and kept. 👍👍👍. I like the audio that you been listening too “ a book of Joy”. Once again, good luck and all the best for Speedy recovery 👍
The inside of our old house is not all re-done (only the kitchen). So the big garden helps me feel wealthy even when sometimes my old bathroom makes me feel frustrated and impoverished. The book of joy is calming and enlightening. It is good to remind ourselves of our values. Thanks for the comment.
Rachel great to see you on the rebound. One year ago July 24 I somehow got an infection that went straight to my 4 month old hip replacement things went down hill very fast They removed my hip replacement and sent me home after 6 week’s in the hospital along with a bunch of new complications to deal with while waiting for the infection to heal. Finely On December 19 I received my new hip. So far so good kinda. I did all my rehab and PT that my insurance would cover. I now can walk short distances using my cane or sometimes I use trekking poles. Just recently I got to thinking about water walking so I got in a swimming pool and just walk back and forth in the shallow end. What a difference I feel so much stronger plus it just feels so much better walking without a cane. If you can maybe give this a try and look for good results. NeXT challenge is to try and shed weight. With absolutely no activity and just sitting all these months I have promptly gained almost 70 pounds. Wishing you the very best in health and try and be patient with yourself
Wow, I commend you on your battle to health! I gained 70 pounds with each of my two children back in the day. Various things helped but eventually I was able to recover. Many people have been sharing their stories with me when I am out somewhere limping around and it is really amazing what people go through and how they find ways to come out of it to better lives. As for water walking - that sounds terrific! I've been thinking about how to get to the pool, lake, and ocean and there is still hot weather and time enough to make it. 🏖️💦
Sorry to hear about your fall. Glad you’re on the mend. Bet Millie is enjoying all that one on one time with you and sampling all your cooking experiments. I’ve seen those Korean camping videos as well. Takes glamping to a whole new height. Looking forward to your next videos when you’re all well and ready for an adventure.
Yeah, the range of camping is interesting. I recently saw a tour of a Snow Peak Campfield campground with some fancy things and it was a little bit mind blowing. Also I saw a video of people camping at Yosemite and the amount of humans around was astonishing! All this makes me think about what we have around here and what I like. So I'm almost ready to get out there and see it. 🌲🌲⛺
Just discovered your channel really loving it. I’m sorry that you hurt yourself knee injuries. Take a long time. I had my knees replaced, but I was out hiking again five months later so it does take a while speedy recovery.
When I am limping around with my giant knee brace, many total strangers come up to me and start telling me their knee stories. It's super interesting actually. Knee replacement sounds out of this world but it must be a common procedure because so so many people seem to have them. Seems like all my old injuries have ghost lives like tattoos, sort of still with my body somehow even though cured. So I presume this knee thing will be part of the story forevermore. Amazing you were hiking again in 5 months! That says you must have had a good physical therapy team. They are knowledgeable and always seem to see the next steps that I myself cannot predict.
Thanks! All these nice comments have been really fun. The Physical Therapist says I can keep my next camping reservation! So I just have to keep things slowly and carefully moving forward. 🛶🌲🌲🌲⛺
Welcome to the comfortable world of lightweight cots. It was a gamechanger for me. Took it to Philmont and most camping trips. And always have a chair.... Good to hear your recovery is coming along....and even an elusive sight of Tom in a video.
Yeah, so I had no plan to put that cot inside the tent but the more I lay on it, the more I think that might be a good thing to try. It certainly is nice to lay back instead of always be propped up in a chair. I've always been the person who wants to put their feet up. And Tom is always excellent support in the background but doesn't usually want to be on camera. 😊
Wow, how did you get those injuries? It has been so interesting hearing many people's stories of injury. And I presume you are now mobile and active? Having had a lot of confusion during my past injuries, this one seems more straightforward. Perhaps we learn as we go, what it is like to go through the steps.
@@RachelWhelton well the arthritis is hereditary, and I was in color guard for 4 years and figure skating as well. I tore my first meniscus thinking I could outrun an 8-year-old lol, and the other one came I believe on the ammo trail last year. I take cortisone shots, but what I really need are knee replacements which I have been putting off! I know it's frustrating, but you definitely don't want to try to go back too soon and not fully heal
Glad to hear you are on the mend. Take the time you need to recover. You will get back out there when it feels right for you. Self care and recovery are important. Looking forward to your future adventures (even car camping)!
I've been thinking of you since your fall and wondering how you've been doing. Thank you for the update, and I'm so glad you're recovering. I love your hiking videos, but I miss the days of your car camping and campground tours, so I look forward to the adventures you might have in store as you heal your knee. Take good care of yourself, Rachel.
Hooray - somebody likes the car camping videos! Ha ha... some of those old ones make me cringe at certain things I did, usually in the way of making the video. Anyway I'm determined to explore the topic more and see what we can find out there. 🏕️🌲🌲⛺🌲🌲
If you haven't done so already...ice ice ice! Can't express strongly enough the importance of icing, even months later. Is a key factor in comfort and quickest healing process (I paid dearly for that knowledge decades ago, btw). I know the restless feeling you must have but your body will pick-up right where you left off because you've already done the hard work. Best wishes.
It is so easy to look at ice as no big deal and stop doing it. But I think you are right. It has to be top of the list and keep happening. I have three bags in the freezer and just keep rotating them. If I have to go do errands, I notice the difference for missing ice rounds. I think I could have saved myself some hassle if I had gone into injury-recovery mode from day one!
Hey Rachel, thanks for the update. I had feared the worst after not hearing from you for a few weeks so I'm happy that your knee is improving, albeit slowly. I look forward to seeing you upgrade your camping game while sharing your beautiful photography as you make the most of the summer within your current limitations. Katahdin and all the other big mountains will be there when you are ready. Take care.
Thank you so much! Yes, sometimes you have to look at what you have and make it work. I am surprised already how clear my mind feels when I am not running around multi-tasking constantly.
Ahhh, writing. Sometimes I come across a blog or two and read people's camping stories. Maybe I can work some writing into the video. After all, I was an English major and practiced writing during three years of law school.
Well I’m thrilled to see and hear of your progress as your subscribers will be quite pleased to see as well. I also have been thinking more of car camping and started watching TH-cam contributors from the UK. They are most enjoyable and the cooking will put you out into your cooking lab, daily! Kent Survival; Simon a bloke in the woods; andrew park, to name a few. Enjoy your rest!!!!
That is good news that your injury will heal on its own. It’s definitely better to have a Dr look at it especially if it’s still really hurting a week later. Car camping sounds like a great way to help the recovery process and ease back into hiking. As a fellow active person I know how frustrating an injury can be but it looks like you’re managing great and still enjoying the outdoors a lot.
I get the same issue with my knees. Sometimes it gets aggravated for no reason and I have to take a break from life for at least a few weeks. Totally understand the sanity part! You literally can’t think clearly because of the pain. It just randomly gets better for me. One day I can’t bend or walk and a day later it’s totally fine. Good luck! Those videos are amazing. I get a lot from Fire Maple, ThousWinds, Nature Hike, and Redcamp. Going to start a IGT setup. Looking forward to see what you get. Oh there’s also a foldable charcoal starter 😉
Good comment here, thanks. Yes, I wish I had gotten the matching folding charcoal starter! It was 10 bucks more but now that doesn't seem to matter. The IGT setups are so cool but I might not get that far myself unless I end up camping a lot. I'm going to do a cheap version and see how it goes. I'll def check those channels and see if I am missing any in my subscription list. Thanks! 🌲⛺
Sorry to hear about your injury. I was wondering why I hadn't been seeing any recent hiking videos from you. Now I know why. I wish for you a speedy recovery. If I found myself in your circumstances, I would be taking the time I might otherwise be hiking to enhance my camping and woodcraft skills, which is exactly what you appear to be doing. By the way, I was pleased to see the shirt your are wearing at 9:05. I am that Franconian that left a comment a while back about Fishin' Jimmy. Hello again.
Thanks, yeah, for a while I thought maybe I should just take a break from it all; but being out there is fun and brings together many of my values. The wood chopping has been a total disaster but I have a new plan I'll try next week which does not involve an axe nor hatchet.
Ouch! You'll bounce back this fall. Love your grill, I've been looking at those. Interesting to see it in operation - thanks! Its really hot on the trails now. We got flooded out of our campground in Vt last week - evacuated at 4:00 AM. Hang in - better times and better weather coming.
Thanks. Yes, this is the Camping Moon medium grill, a fraction of the cost from its likely inspiration, the Snow Peak. I have been watching a lot of Snow Peak. Wow - evacuated at 4 am!!! I saw some drone shots and the water was startling. That must have been scary and exciting. Glad you made it out.
Oh NO!! 😢 yeah, one thing you learn quickly when you run and cycle regularly, is to ice without hesitation on any kind of twinge, however severe, or not. Super you don't need surgery.
So good to hear from you. Keep up the PT. I can totally relate - can't live normal life right now. I've been diagnosed with L5 S1 (bulging disc / nerve injury). My hiking has come to abrupt end for now. Looks you're progressing well. You Take care & take time to heal.
Ah, wow, you are into the healing life as well, then. I once was out for weeks with a back ailment. Another time I was off my foot for months and it finally came up as nerve injury (which is so weird - isn't it!!!?). During these times it can be hard to believe our body will ever be boldly strong again. But somehow we find a way. To this day, I do a weird and mysterious back stretch that re-aligns my hips so I can live normally. Best wishes to you as you navigate the path to wellness!
Thanks. Slow it is. Life altering (at least for the summer). So I've been trying to use this slow down time to think out things I won't have time to ponder when life gets back to normal.
That’s terrible to hear. I had a foot injury once and didn’t walk for almost the year at all. I know what it’s like. Looks like you’re getting better though slowly which is good.
Wow, a year. That's a long time. I had a stomach injury that was like that - could never seem to get ahead of it. Makes me grateful that this one seems more simplistic. Knock on wood.
Hi Rachel. So sorry about your knee. I had a Total Knee Replacement in early May after my knee blew up during a backpacking trip in March. So I'm dealing with a lot of the same issues. I highly recommend that you consider getting a Polar Active Ice Therapy machine with knee attachment (easy to find online). It's much more effective than frozen peas or any other typical frozen wrap. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.
Thanks. I've stopped icing, which sounds bad. Maybe I'll ask at Physical Therapy today if I am supposed to be icing still. I've been doing all my stretching and exercises. Good luck with yours. I've met so many knee replacement people and they all seem happy they did it.
That looked rough...glad to see you have been doing well recently...check out the amok camping hammocks...set up chair style the amok draumr is some semi-plush camping.
They are Forget-Me-Nots. They spread and find their way in between every other plant; however they do not crowd out existing plants. They do best in full sun and will grow even in the dry soil of my rocky patio. One pack of seeds and you will likely have them forever!
Shorter hikes and smaller hills work your self back up. If I ever meet you at or around Clark's Bears I'll take you out for Finnan Haddie and it's still Mount Moose-ah-Luke as in Cool Hand Luke
Thank you for checking in with us. We figured something happened. We missed seeing new videos. Take care and get well.

Thanks! 🌲⛺
Glad you don't need surgery! Keep at that physical therapy, we have so missed your videos!! Happy to go camping with you anytime haha
Thanks! I'll do the PT and I am definitely looking forward to making more videos soon.
Yes, I am loving the encouragement on ice. It's going to be a normal thing for me, not only waiting until I have a big injury.
@@RachelWhelton I came back from a run yesterday with swelling on my inner ankle. I iced right away and the swelling disappeared.
@@filmic1 Nice!!! Nice ice.
So glad you're getting better. When fixing the body, slow is way to go!
Thanks.
Yeah, I think I've heard of those cool hammocks. Good idea!
Glad to hear you are getting better! Question. What are those really blue flowers you showed us?
They are Forget-Me-Nots. They spread and find their way in between every other plant; however they do not crowd out existing plants. They do best in full sun and will grow even in the dry soil of my rocky patio. One pack of seeds and you will likely have them forever!
Shorter hikes and smaller hills work your self back up. If I ever meet you at or around Clark's Bears
I'll take you out for Finnan Haddie and it's still Mount Moose-ah-Luke as in Cool Hand Luke
Moose-ah-Luke? I just learned Moose-ah-lahk! Oh man....
Thyme heals all wounds
Thanks. I'm eating thyme right now on my veggie platter breakfast. 😁🌱
