6:35 I was watching and as soon as she used her left foot to grab it I said out loud "Perfect!"... and not a second later, you said it. I got a good chuckle out of that. This was a great video for learning how to do this because she was so perfect. She was JUST new enough that she did what you wanted, but still required all the "help" you were suggesting. So she gave you the opportunity to show how to help a bird that didn't quite get it, and she showed what it should look like when it works. That was really cool.
I thoroughly enjoyed that Ben. Very cool and very informative. As to a name... she looks mostly black so I was thinking .. Obsidian? Anyway Merry Christmas to you and your family Ben. I hope you all have a beautiful Christmas day. All the Best from The west coast of Scotland.
Just went through this 2 days ago with my new Harris Hawk li,e you I was surprised how smooth it went she nearly caught me out as I was reading a message on a tablet while she was thinking about it lol . Great videos as ever Ben . All the best for Christmas and New year from Scotland 🏴👍😁
Excellent... I'm looking forward to seeing the progression of training with this bird. This is exactly what I've been wanting from this channel - practical application of your knowledge and experience rather than a lecture in front of the camera. 👍👍
Good evening and merry Christmas Ben. I am in the process of training a juvenile Swainson's hawk that was kicked out of the nest in late summer. I concur with every point you have made regarding the relationship between food and the development of trust. I have found that it matters not what species of raptor one is dealing with, food becomes your currency of trust. You have wonderful insights regarding the behavior of these critters that are no doubt experiential as well as years of accumulated knowledge. I am constantly referring our volunteers to not only view but to understand your your words. Thank you so very much for your videos - keep them coming. May you be blessed with a very merry Christmas and a happy and most important, healthy new year. Regards from the Black Hills Raptor Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.
I am excited for your work with the Swanson’s Hawk. I know I jabbed them a little bit, but they are really cool birds. I wish you the best of success with yours. I am grateful my videos have been useful. I think it is great to connect and share ideas and principles. Hope you have a fabulous Christmas!
Thanks for your tips, Ben...wet food, toe scratches 👏she's really doing great, trusting you, nice...your assistance, to her eating---wonderful 😀. Spectacular training/bonding ❤
Awesome! Can't wait to see you fly her after pigeons. I'm a pigeon guy but figure losing some to raptors is just the price of flying them. Had a beautiful Cooper's take one a few days ago. I've seen some pretty good Merlin chases over the years. The pigeons need to hit a different gear to have any chance against them. Mine will be locked down for a while now, no use feeding them to too many hawks.
I'm on my second apprentice bird, and both have let me know what their names should be. My first bird was a Male RT named Ornery, and my current bird is a Female RT named Patience.
Your assumption about dogs doesn’t ring true. You can measure stress in a dog by their refusal to take food. This equates to what you perceive as trust in birds of prey.
6:49 I love how she observes your body language and almost as if on cue understands what your trying to get her to do.
Steady learning.

Any video with an actual demonstration is a winner in my book. Thank you Ben. Happy Holidays!
