Review a Defeater album. There's close to zero chance that you've listened to Touche Amore, PBTT, and La Dispute and haven't come across Defeater. Their debut album Travels is a classic.
Really fair review and respectable. Simultaneously this album has sentimental value to so many people. I have friends who claim this album saved their life. It just douses you with raw, sincere, and relatable emotions. Thanks for crediting that, it's really the special sauce of this whole album.
this album sucker punched me, after a year of hearing the opening tune. then i just "got it" and never looked back, often never skip a track when shuffle puts it on. still not bored. love from front to back, just flows.
just discovered them today, listened to some songs on youtube and even if i like the band very much, i hate the fans already. no video or song of or about them without some childish genre discussion. can we please get over this?
I'm so glad you finally reviewed this, dude! This is my album of the year so far. I'm one of those 75 kids at their small venue shows screaming along with every word.
Thank you so much for actually reviewing this. Personally, I love everything Touche Amore (Pronounced Amor-ray) has ever released. However, I find it a bit hard to enjoy their new album as much as I would like, because they have taken their music is a subtle new direction. Personally, I loved Touche Amore's slow buildups and "futile"-sounding climaxes in their older work, which is a lot more scarce in Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me.
This is my AOTY along with Raein's album (italian screamo). By the way I'd like to hear your review on the new Prurient album, no more harsh noise, just crazy stuff.
LOVE this album, I never thought you'd review something like it so this is a pleasant surprise. :D Have you listened to any of La Dispute? They're kind of similar, but with quite a bit more variance in the vocals and overall approach and with much better lyrics, at least for me. They did a split with Touche Amore last year. They should have a new LP out this year.
i adore this album, simply because i only recently found myself truly listening to it. but i can already find myself getting tired of every song sounding similar. but i feel like I, as well as most people who listen to this album, are able to relate to it in such a powerful way that the band was able to accomplish something truly genuine and beautiful.
Good review. This band is fucking brilliant, I guess I can understand the "negative points" that you mentioned, but it's still a good album. Condolences is probably the most surprising song on there, that piano being played over Bolm's screaming is so bone chilling. I would say more, but I'm running out of word limit. I have a band/album suggestion (running in the theme of hardcore); Defeater. They released a new album this year, and it's really damn good, powerful messages, you catch my drift.
Really enjoy the record. Sure the constant screaming may get boring but just the sheer sincerity of it keeps it alive for me. I'd give this a 8, actually. One of my favourites this year. You should also check out Defeater's EP Lost Ground. Just cause.
And are you a saints fan? I'm from new Orleans and I love them. Oh and if you love new Orleans jazz you should check out this street band here called loose marbles I love them.
I really like this album. I havent been listening to too much hardcore lately, even though that used to be my favorite genre. This album really stands out in the atmosphere it creates. It hits me really deep.
I'd have to say for myself, that I personally enjoyed this album. I was just recently on a Two Door Cinema/Black Kids music binge and was recommend I listen to Pianos Become The Teeth, which led me to Touche Amore. Personally, I love the lead singers screams and guitar parts. Although, I'd actually stick with Bear Vs Shark for my emotional post hardcore stuff anyday of the week.
This is one of those albums where I won't listen to it super often, but when I do I listen to the entire thing start to finish with no breaks. I find it's best that way.
Good review. All your points are valid. I've heard people complain about the lyrics a lot on this one, though nobody's really explained why as well as you have. I quite like them if i'm being honest, but I guess I'm a punk rock Jimmy Stewart. Also, your point about variety.... How much variety can you get out of 20 minutes? I see this more as an EP with lots of songs than an actual album - it has the number of tracks but not the length of a LONG PLAYER, sort of like a counterpoint to (continued)
Can I get some recommendations of bands like Touche Amore? I can't find anything like it. Either it's shitty metalcore/post hardcore or its too punky and not enough scream. I want something in between like these guys!
I agree, this album sometimes is really great, but also I grow weary of the stalemate vocals. Please please review anything by La Dispute. They're the only melodic hardcore band I truly love. They have one LP which is phenomenal and they have a new one coming out October 4th.
Anthony, I do want you to give your view on today's hip hop, pros and cons, why you like it, why you don't, where we could improve, etc. Because I realize that you've done a lot of hip-hop reviews this year, so I'd like to hear your view on the genre in general. It might be a horrible idea, but whatever :3
(continued) the first Young Livers album, which was only eight trackes, but ran a bit longer. Inanyways, I think it's worth emphasising that there's a lot of, if not originality then innovation, from the loudness of the vocals, to the mixture of sometimes Bridge And Tunnel like guitars with the vocals, as well as the drummer introducing the odd blast beat. All in all, I think it's well worth the 20 minutes a spin takes, and I'm really looking forward to screaming those words at Fest time!
One of my friends plays in this band, after playing in another band Thriller for a long time. Its been interesting to see where this project has gone. Pretty much agree with most of what you had to say here. Please review Chad Vangaalen's "Diaper Island" My friend and I absolutely love this album, and I want to know what YOU think.
Actually, it can be considered Emo. Emo is a Punk sub-genre, highly synonymous with Post-Hardcore, that started around 1985 or so with the band Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, Embrace, and a few other bands. Second wave Emo/Post-Hardcore added Alternative to the mix with bands like American Football, Mineral, Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, and myriad of other bands. Soon after, "Screamo" came to be. The term has been used loosely lately, but it refers to bands like Circle Takes The Square.
6/7 out of 10 really glad you reviewed this album. I like you, thought the lyrics were a bit much at some point. But its the same reason i love this album.......some good listens have, and will be had in the future. Its on my ipod so.......good stuff IMHO. thanks!
Each time the vocals cut out and there is a musical interlude, I keep thinking Geoff Rickly is going to pick up the vocals from there. Speaking of Geoff Rickly, I never got even a trkvvwz from the new Thursday. Couldn't I get a two sentence review of No Devolucion, Fantano? Especially curious since you like THIS but your "love for (this genre) doesn't stray too far into the 2000's"
dint enjoy this too much:/ i could see right through those lyrics and the static vocals dint do it though the concepts were good but i have a question. what are your favorite "screamo" bands? also u should do an "essentials" series for those who don't lurk on that good ol' music board;P
The lyrics on their freshman album "dead horse" are better. They continue that epicly encouraging anthem-like theme but are not as trite. The lyrics on this album seem forced. Unfortunately, the "dead horse" production isn't as good but I appreciate their collection so much more for it. I'm a big fan of these guys. They are very dedicated to putting on an intimate show and all members are great musicians.

Their debut album Travels is a classic.
A-LESS-AY
will lament become 10 ?
This is actually one of my favourite albums
Same here!
Really fair review and respectable. Simultaneously this album has sentimental value to so many people. I have friends who claim this album saved their life. It just douses you with raw, sincere, and relatable emotions. Thanks for crediting that, it's really the special sauce of this whole album.
Favorite album of 2011. Any negative views you have of this band will vanish once you see these songs live
It's pronounced Touchay Amoray
thx i was calling them touch more.
this album sucker punched me, after a year of hearing the opening tune. then i just "got it" and never looked back, often never skip a track when shuffle puts it on. still not bored. love from front to back, just flows.

Amazing album. So glad to find this review years later. Love it so much
I'm a huge fan of this LP, I find that the focus on lyrics over instrumentation is really refreshing.
I'm so glad you finally reviewed this, dude! This is my album of the year so far. I'm one of those 75 kids at their small venue shows screaming along with every word.
You should review balance and composure
Hey Anthony, have you thought about reviewing the new Dear Hunter Color spectrum stuff?
Thank you so much for actually reviewing this.
Personally, I love everything Touche Amore (Pronounced Amor-ray) has ever released. However, I find it a bit hard to enjoy their new album as much as I would like, because they have taken their music is a subtle new direction. Personally, I loved Touche Amore's slow buildups and "futile"-sounding climaxes in their older work, which is a lot more scarce in Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me.
one of my favorites of this year, check out Pianos Become The Teeth-Old Pride
i can't wait to get this album in the mail. Thanks for reviewing this awesome band anthony!
@islandmornings you like title fight but you've never heard of these guys? have you heard of La Dispute?
I found this album to be extremely honest and emotional. One of my favorite records of 2011. Definitely.
@xDCJx oh my god yes! or title fights first album ?
Thank you, Antony for reviewing such type of music. Great review
This is my AOTY along with Raein's album (italian screamo). By the way I'd like to hear your review on the new Prurient album, no more harsh noise, just crazy stuff.
How about The Skull Defekts - Peer Amid?.....Or Seefeel - Seefeel?
LOVE this album, I never thought you'd review something like it so this is a pleasant surprise. :D Have you listened to any of La Dispute? Oh and please please please review the new balam acab when it comes out.
Really enjoy the record. Sure the constant screaming may get boring but just the sheer sincerity of it keeps it alive for me. I'd give this a 8, actually. One of my favourites this year.
You should also check out Defeater's EP Lost Ground. Just cause.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS
Love "Wants / Needs" and "Home Away From Here" can't stop playing them,
it's a really bare album.
I was sure you were going to review Zomby - Dedication. Sadly, I was mistaken...
And are you a saints fan? I'm from new Orleans and I love them. Oh and if you love new Orleans jazz you should check out this street band here called loose marbles I love them.
Touche Amore is utterly amazing. Especially live. Thanks for reviewing them.
I love how he does the same movement with his hands ALL the time.
Make a video about Defeater. either Lost Ground or Empty Days and Sleepless Nights should be good
You know what, Anthony. Good review!
Yes! Oh Yes! Really down with you reviewing a band like this!!

***** I listen to them, pretty sweet band!
La Dispute? The vocalist sounds really similar. Also, Loma Prieta is a pretty intense screamo band, Idk if you'd like them but they're awesome imo.

next you should review, what you dont see, is survived by, or the things we think were missing
For 20 minutes, I think it might be one of the hardest hitting and most vocally sincere LPs I've heard in a while. I personally love this LP.
Are your glasses prescription, or are they just for looks.
I agree, this album sometimes is really great, but also I grow weary of the stalemate vocals.
Please please review anything by La Dispute. They're the only melodic hardcore band I truly love. They have one LP which is phenomenal and they have a new one coming out October 4th.
Do I see a Mitch Dubey pin?

Don't agree on all of your points, but a very good review! Much respect dude, enjoyed it.
Man you just have to review is survived by. This album was so good but the new one is beyond greatness.

I like it alot. I thought their first release was a bit more concise. Good review, as always.
Actually, it can be considered Emo.

@2:13 Jeremy said in an interview they recorded it live in the studio.
You should review Moonface's Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped, when it comes out August 2nd :D
You've heard Modern Life Is War's "Witness," haven't you, Anthony? That's a modern hardcore album that definitely rivals some of the classics.
You should review Algernon Cadwallader's Parrot Flies
Review the GIVERS album "in light"
6/7 out of 10
really glad you reviewed this album. I like you, thought the lyrics were a bit much at some point. But its the same reason i love this album.......some good listens have, and will be had in the future. Its on my ipod so.......good stuff IMHO.
thanks!
These guys were on my list for sxsw this past year but of course like so many other bands I missed them
Sorry that comment came from a mobile phone.. many typos. The song 'Stay True' was written for touche amore though.
I can't believe I've been listening to this album for 2 years now.
I love this album and this band. Thanks Doctor Fantano!

Each time the vocals cut out and there is a musical interlude, I keep thinking Geoff Rickly is going to pick up the vocals from there.

that sounds exactly like a Touche Amore show. keep it up and review the new Raein.
