The fact that someone out there thinks Freddie Mercury's singing voice is/was overrated blows my mind. The dude has one of the biggest ranges in rock music. He had more than a three octave range, full voice. The guy could sing the phone book
I personally like his singing but one of my old roommates genuinely didn't like his voice much, but it wasn't anything to do with range or technical ability, my roommate did respect that he was talented, but it was just his personal taste because Freddie was too nasaly/abrasive for him, which honestly I do understand even though I disagree

You shouldn't call Bob Dylan or Lou Reed "overrated" when they are generally not rated as top rate singers. Nobody ever said they were technically great singers. You either enjoy their style and expression or you don't.
@@markshepperson3603 Even someone with a very appealing voice like Neil Young likes range and technique, it were his tone and style the ones that made him so commercially successfull, aside of his songwriting obviously.
They are not overrated whatsoever, they are poets, excellent musicians and the top tier greatest songwriters, they also have more interesting and more tonally euphonic voices than those “big voiced divas” who just warble and try to sing a million notes per syllable whilst being incapable of even writing their own songs.
Strong agree with your reaction to whoever said Freddie Mercury was over-rated or that Prince is the poor man’s Michael Jackson. Seriously shitty takes.
I'd agree that Mercury is overrated in the sense that he's rated as probably the best singer of all time, and while he's a fantastic singer I don't think he's the GOAT singer, but instead the GOAT performer alongside MJ. Mediocre he's not though that's for sure.
LET'S AGREE: If it wasn't for Prince and Michael Jackson being two black pop artists in the 80s, there would be little to no comparison between their music
True. I think its just cause they both were black and basically created the styles of the 80s... and that a lot of artists wanted to sound like them. It would've been interesting to have seen what they would do if they collabed.
Another reason the comparison is made is because many people find that prince is a better vocalist even though he isn’t as popular, so it does make sense to bring it up.
Right? He had a little more than 3 octaves and was absolutly INCREDIBLE in lower and higher registers, its not like alot of singers who have a similar ou bigger range but doesnt maintain the glow and versitility in some parts of their range. Freddy was potent on every aspect.
@@Shicomogs i dont really take on consideration his high notes above the sixth octave bc he is barely singing them, i think f2 - a5 is better bc it represents the notes that are actually solid and well placed, and not just random screams that he made like once and happened to be on the sixth octave.
I think he is more overrated because of the story he had, his suicide, the aesthetic boys/girls wanting to romanticize all his depression, that Kurt was a believer in astrology, he liked anime, he was "in favor" of feminism, he wore dresses, etc... Many things that nowadays are considered cool and serve to fit into today's society standars.

Yes they're pretty much punk. Grunge isn't a genre, it's a label given to rock music from Seattle. How come there would otherwise be any arguing on whether STP is grunge or not?
As for Bob Dylan, part of his contribution to the evolution of music is that he demonstrated that if the songs you write are good enough they will sound good even if you're not a technically good singer.
If MJ, Prince or Freddie don't deserve the recognition they have, who does lmao? I feel some of these people are just suburban middle class kids, or indie tryhards who praise whatever trendy Spotify artist is being promoted.
Maybe that's the point. Maybe their point is that no one deserves so much wealth and coddling just because they can sing and perform. Not sure if this is my viewpoint or not, though. But you did ask.

Not only that, but he could sing live just as cleanly as his studio performances. I've watched so many live videos of him singing and never heard his voice waver or crack in anyway. And with his energy on-stage, that feat is damn near impossible. Freddie Mercury can't be overrated, he can only be fairly rated as the greatest Rock singer of all time (Above the likes of Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, Mick Jagger, and even Paul McCartney who I would put at 2nd for rock vocals).

Kurt’s vocals are unmatchable. They are so personal to him and purposefully done the way they are that you need to have Kurt’s soul and artistic passion to express his lyrics. there is no faking it
Kurt Cobain’s soul and artistic passion is essentially that of a suburban high school junior who discovered weed and thinks everything he says is deep.

There are certain bands that could have stayed on the DL and they would have done pretty okay and because they were catapulted off like one good song I believe that sometimes a certain part of these band's audiences will think that they're over rated after putting out a follow up album to all that success and it gets shit on because it's not like [Previous Album]
That's usually what 'overrated' means. When there's no real criticism to cite, there's always 'overrated': "I'm angry that it's popular, and I can't stop putting my nose in the spoiled milk"
I saw someone list out the lowest and highest notes some singers have hit and although Elvis typically rested in one area, his range from top to bottom was shockingly wide because of that falsetto paired with his deep deep lows
why are people so dead keen on a wide vocal range? i'd rather have a singer with a unique style than some generic wide range one. not saying a wide vocal range is a bad thing, but it's not a necessity for singers imo.
It's not about necessity, people bring up range because it is impressive and can sound really good if done well. When talking about vocalists range is the thing that let's you stand out. Having a high and powerful voice literally makes you stand out, it's easier to hear. I'm not even being silly here. In a crowded bar or at a concert, the singer with the higher range will be heard better than the one that sings low. There is more to it too, a good song has range in the melody, going up or down creates drama, so singers with good range can have more dramatic and emotional songs. Of course it's not needed, I like singers who have small ranges too, it's just I don't think of them as amazing singers, I usually like them because they are great songwriters.
Right. Look at people like Frank Sinatra, he had a range of around D2-G#4 but his voice is one of the best I've ever heard. It's not about how high or low your voice can be, it's what you can do with it.
Prince was a musical genius, MJ had a voice from God, Cobain’s gruff delivery kickstarted a genre, Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter of all time, and Freddie was probably the most talented frontman of all time (Chris Cornell and Plant were just amazing as well)
In my opinion people ONLY compare MJ and Prince because they were both similar in physical appearance. Couldn’t be more different musically the only thing they share is being pop stars but for totally different reasons
the reasons were the same: they were both insanely talented and full of musicality. Not even their styles are different: they were both inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Little Richard. Still they were both able to create somethin unique, that's instantly recognizable.
@@richardkovacs2006 Their styles were completely different. For one, MJ collaborated with Quincy Jones who wrote most of his iconic tracks and Quincy Jones, while a genius, had a completely different take on pop, fusing pop R&B with elements of jazz. Prince had a much wider breadth of musical proclivities and borrowed far more from new wave, rock, and funk, as well as jazz. Furthermore, Prince mixed his albums completely differently, allowing different instruments to take center stage, whereas Jones always make Michael's vocals the heart of the track. Fantano is correct that you'll never mistake Prince for MJ sonically. They were completely different.
You’re probably right, I never listened to them growing up and missed their fame years, so basically I just have their appearances and reputation to go off of, which is why I always mix the two up
I agree. They are so stylistically and sonically different and I dont think either of them took the comparisons seriously. People really compared Sign O' The Times and BAD to one another back in the day. That just does a disservice to two amazing artists. I just laugh now, but Prince and MJ had two completely different approaches to their artistry and sought to give their fans two different listening experiences.
None of theses artists and singers are overrated. I'm not fans of all of them but I recognise their immense talent. Sometimes when we are too familiar with an artist and their music is overplayed there is a backlash which is where the overrated arguments come in
Mike Pattons is absolutely not overrated, he's awe inspiringly creative and absurdly versatile technicaly. It's not just the range, it's the willingness to explore and use each and any vocal technique known to mankind

Freddie Mercury was the complete package and then some. The guy had a great voice and knew how to use it perfectly. He is not overrated. He was just that damn good. He could sing in any genre of music. Unlike some artists who might have a good voice but don't know how to use it. Or there's some genres they just can't sing in.

Anybody who has heard Michael Jackson's raw singing voice. Without going through any sound mixers or special microphones, just his voice straight from him, knows that man could sing. Sure he added the HEHE's and the CHAMOW all over the place, but that's what made him different. Vocally. That man could definitely sing.
Yeah, a truly obscene take. The dude sang his own harmonies. Not pitch shifting or auto-tuning, just doing multiple takes and having it layered onto the track. His range was insane. Go listen to "The Lady in My Life" and "Baby Be Mine" if there's any doubt in your mind. I honestly find Adele kind of hyped. She's great, don't get me wrong, but when she came onto the scene it was like people hadn't heard a white girl who sounded black before (Amy Winehouse *cough). I don't think she's necessarily revolutionary or unique, she simply has a great voice and sings great songs, which is great. Sometimes, though, I feel like I hear people raising her on a pedestal like she'll be remembered as another Aretha Franklin or something.
Mariah Carey actually goes pretty unappreciated for her lower range. She can transition from super deep notes to her trademark high belting seamlessly.
Guadalupe Picasso - I'm sure her voice has changed slightly since she is older now, but for the most part, she can still do the whistle notes and everything.
Same thing with Ariana. They try to discount her singing by saying she can only do high notes (as if those are easy to do), but ignore her many songs with perfect lower note registry. She's not Mariah level yet but she's one of the few excellent vocalists of this generation which doesn't really seem to value vocalists that much. ffs Selena gomez had a 10 year music career.

why are people so dead keen on a wide vocal range? i'd rather have a singer with a unique style than some generic wide range one. not saying a wide vocal range is a bad thing, but it's not a necessity for singers imo.
I think range helps with tone and versatility, and depending on the individuals it'd certainly contribute to their singing style.
Right. Look at people like Frank Sinatra, he had a range of around D2-G#4 but his voice is one of the best I've ever heard. It's not about how high or low your voice can be, it's what you can do with it.
It's not even a wide range the general population care about. It's just high notes, people don't usually care if you have a wide lower range
Range is meaningless if you aren't doing anything with it.

in some ways michael jackson was an underrated singer, particilarly in his adult years. people focused on the videos and overbown concerts etc. he always had too much going on on stage and too much pyrotechnics but if you purely analyse his vocals on record he was a great singer. very pure tone perfect for pop music
Those later years werent live vocal performances though iirc? Wasn’t his last tour without lipsynching the Bad Tour?
@@alecreyna1147 yea thats why i said "on record". he was never pure lip sync but because of the dance routines etc, I dont think he could keep the vocals going at the same time. its sad. I wish he went on jools holland or something and only danced in between the vocals. But from off the wall up to the end, people rarely mention the singing, which for the most part was fantastic.

“Prince is the poor man’s Michael Jackson”
BRUH. Prince was such a talented musician, he practically had his own genre. Look up "Minneapolis Sound." Whoever said he's a poor man's Michael Jackson is a casual.
IMO Michael is a superior technical singer but not by much. Prince had better range by a decent margin. Prince was a better instrumentalist by large margin but that's true of almost anyone compared to Prince. Michael was probably a bit better of a songwriter but at that point there are no losers.
The idea that either could be a poor man's version of the other is ridiculous.
@@Adamdidit I'm a huge MJ fan but c'mon, Prince's songwriting ability exceeds Michael's by a long shot I think. Prince was technically more talented as a musician and instrumentalist, Michael was way more talented as an overall entertainer and and just a hugggee solo icon and phenomenal talent. It's like comparing David Bowie to James Brown... One was an instrumentalist singer, one was an enigmatic entertainer.
Singing? Prince had a bigger range, while Michael was technically superior in terms of vocals and technique... I agree with you, would edge to Michael more

Mariah would still be Mariah without the high notes. The woman can singnperiod not just in her whistle register
It’s like saying chocolate cake is nothing without the chocolate
Except that Mariah has the whole store and goods even if she didnt have the whistle register
@@sgshumblecrumb6046 She's overhyped. Need any proof, watch her bland cover of natural woman. It's very karaoke. And don't like it.
Mariah Carey actually goes pretty unappreciated for her lower range. She can transition from super deep notes to her trademark high belting seamlessly.
Can she still sing like this?
Guadalupe Picasso - I'm sure her voice has changed slightly since she is older now, but for the most part, she can still do the whistle notes and everything.
Same thing with Ariana. They try to discount her singing by saying she can only do high notes (as if those are easy to do), but ignore her many songs with perfect lower note registry. She's not Mariah level yet but she's one of the few excellent vocalists of this generation which doesn't really seem to value vocalists that much. ffs Selena gomez had a 10 year music career.
her super deep notes are not worth the mention.

it's unappreciated because it doesn't matter. she doesn't do anything interesting with it.
