- The title pretty much says it all. I turned this mortar and pestle from a piece of American Walnut.

Nice turning. I’m just not sure about the flat/sharp edges on the pestle. Most pestles I’ve seen have a smaller round know for the palm, and the larger ball for the grinding. Anyhow, nice work!

Is that "food safe" or is there a particular wood or finish to make those user friendly?
It’s finished with Rubio Monocoat which is food safe.
In general, any wood that produces a fruit will be food safe. Walnut, pecan, apple, pear etc. But, since there are always exceptions, verify that the wood is really what it is supposed to be.
nice piece...but it's not satisfying at all...you did a shortcut...you should turn it on the lathe to make it rund not by using a sawmill...
Using a bandsaw for roughing out the round is pretty common because it preserves more of the excess wood for other projects.
