This is the best rec I’ve heard. The balance between “the forest and the trees” is really impressive; every moment is compelling on its own but you always sense its place in the broader story. Not a single moment seems out of place, gratuitous, underdone etc., as if every single note has received painstaking analysis. Technically flawless, to boot. And the intensity/excitement of the piece is never lost (whereas other pianists seem to go for either depth or excitement, rarely achieving both).
This pianist is low on views; I hope he keeps up the good work cause he seems like a true artist.

I agree, was quite impressed by M Sigler's artistry, having heard many virtuosos on this difficult sonata. Had to search for him, don't know his work but will now.

It's outstanding for me how the harmonic phrasing is startlingly brilliant.

This is one of the best piano works I've heard in a long while. I think this sonata is better than Rachmaninoff's famous piano concertos. The pianist is also extraordinarily talented, and really brings out the melodies and "voices" with superb clarity.

A fascinating and persuasive performance by an interpreter of considerable subtlety and intelligence, in the service of a criminally neglected masterpiece whose complex motivic structure entirely escapes most pianists (and most audiences.) It is clear that M. Sigier has brooded at great length on this deep and moving work, and arrived at his own distinctive views on how best to reveal its essence, for this is no mere variation on some other well-known artist's performance, but an essentially new and insightful reading that succeeds brilliantly despite its various technical imperfections. I would be thrilled to purchase M. Sigier's recording of this sonata, should he ever undertake to produce one, for I strongly suspect that, in the controlled conditions of a recording studio, and with the benefit of multiple takes, and shrewd, sensitive editing, he and his engineers would ultimately produce a document not only of great beauty, but of lasting historical significance, and perhaps even transcend the extraordinarily high standards set by the superb recordings of Ogdon and of Chochieva. Bravo, M. Sigier! You have the admiration and gratitude of a devoted admirer of great pianists, and of this tremendous sonata.

I concur with this very insightful and carefully objective analysis. The only caveat I would have is that an overly technical editing of a full performance might result in an unrealistic if brilliant “product”. There’s something even more brilliant about a performance ab initio ad finem which embraces in its sweeping unity even the technical flaws.

Gargantuan opus only a select few artists including this one can let alone the immense difficulty give this masterpiece the musicality it so richly deserves, bravo G.S. Possibly this sonata pushes the boundaries of human creativity, as well the pianists who can perform this unworldly creation.

Totally agree in the hands of an average pianist this piece becomes unrecognizable, but in the hands of a genius- you will hear melodic lines from every direction, my favourite recording is Boris Beresovsky, Only problem is that he makes it sound so easy.

I don't even know how many different recordings of this work I've listened to and while they were all very good, I always thought there was something missing in each of them. I always wished the pianist was doing something slightly different whether it be a change in tempo, phrasing, volume, etc. here or there. When I first heard this recording, it blew me away. It is probably the closest I think anyone has come to perfection with this work.

rarely have I heard such perfect "touch" control on a keyboard. Awfully slow performance though, lots of detail, but too many stops and starts, hard to hold such an immense musical structure together at this relaxed tempo. Rach actually performed this sonata more often during his 1920's-30's recitals than the (now, more popular) 2nd Sonata; it'd be interesting to hear how fast he played it; I'm betting quite a bit more up-tempo than this.

  • @johannsebastianbach3411

I think the tempo fluctuates so much in the first mov.. couldn’t leave myself to the music and feel the narrative… felt like ivo pogorelich playing rach
However i loved the ferocity of the 3rd movement very much! Still, this only shows guillaume a true artist! He has the courage to try new ways of looking at a standard!!
