When people ask me who my favorite musician of all time it's a simple answer mr Raymond Charles. No-one transcends music quite the way he does. Maybe Elvis but it's all objective. The genres and hearts and souls rays touched means his legacy will live forever. A boy straight up out the fields. Ray Charles Robinson. "don't ever let anyone turn you into a cripple."

"...The mournful expressiveness of his voice opens a window into the human heart. It is the sound of soul, a cosmic howl that cuts through emotional callousness like a hot knife through butter. A sound nurtured in the blues and gospel soaked soil of the deep South and deepened by his own reservoir of pain and loneliness..." Yvonne Smith, Genius of Soul Documentary.

This is even better than his studio recording of this...
What a privilege it is to see and hear this...
    Newport, 1960.
Nobody but Brother Ray could make a tempo this slow still groove.
(This is now my second-favorite performance of this classic.)
    **enorbet2
Cool you noticed and mentioned that. There is a documentary about Ray in which I think it was Dizzy Gillespie was expressing amazement at how any drummer could stay with Ray. He said "One night Ray started with 'It.......brings..........a-a-a.........." and Dizzy started walking the 8 or 10 steps to another horn player to tell him something and he made the steps and got the first word out before Ray hit, 'te-ee-ear' " :) He said something like he wondered if Ray sent drummers to an early grave. XD There will never be another Ray.
    *****
I remember he was on the Carson Tonight Show one night, in the '70's, I think, and he was grooving at an incredibly slow-yet-sweaty tempo, and he actually said, on mike, between vocal lines, "Hold on, Drummer, we'll get there..."
...and the "Drummer" he said that to was the great Ed Shaughnessy.

Love that valedictory conclusion: “Oh …… doncha know that it’s alright now!!! “. Ray also gave Tiger Woods his great throw-away line: “ that’s what I’m talkin’ about!”.

ray Charles is such a musical genius that even racist people of white decent weren't afraid too admit that they loved ray Charles or go see him live even though they were racist so they totally contradicted themselves they were never racist they couldn't be too embrace this man they were brain washed so sad too know that racism ever exsisted or that it even still does too this day especially back south its a miserable quality too have or endure we should all just appreciate life and love one another and come together as a whole universe the way god meant us too instead of hate one another for no apparent reason.. its a shame this world is self destructing itself do too our ignorant plague do too freedom of the human race..

Amazing!!! Thanks for posting. I grew up listening to Joe Cocker’s version, much like this one, on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen album. Now I know the true source of inspiration. Slow and bluesy. So fine! ❤
