- Is the LEGO Technic Material Handler 42144 really worth $150? The set contains only 835 pieces, so do the pneumatic functions justify the high price tag? Beyond just the price, this set has some other flaws. For example, there's no motor upgradeability unlike older pneumatic sets, and the steering gear is located in a weird place. Despite its shortcomings, it is still quite fun to control the arm, especially since it uses pneumatics. The LEGO Technic summer 2022 sets seem quite good, especially that helicopter.

150$!!! What is Lego thinking. I thought this set would have been 60-70$
$70 is way too cheap for nu-lego. That isn't even the cost of the 42139 ATV, and on top of that there's a luxury cost associated with pneumatics. For contemporary Lego even $100 is too cheap. It really sucks.
When I saw the piece count I thought 80 dollars and then I saw pneumatics and so I was like of its probably a hunge but then I saw the price and sweet baby jesus you could get the new tow truck for the same price
Honestly at my local toy shop which is quite big it is already £80
On Amazon currently for £70
To be honest, I'm quite disappointed that LEGO has dropped B-models for larger Technic Sets. They definitely could have created something else out of this.
Maybe they could've made a nice propeller airplan as a b model for this! I also wish that B models would return
@@Unbrickme I do wonder how far you could get if you try to build the B-model of 42053 using the pieces from this set.
I wanted this set when I first saw pictures of it, but I absolutely agree that it is both incomplete and overpriced. If it had an air tank and was motorized, it'd be worth it. If it was less expensive, it'd be worth it. If it had a better steering and turntable mechanism, it'd be worth it. Since this set has none of these features, I will sadly have to pass.
Also since lego technic 42082 (Big Red) was 300 when it came out and this 150, I would rather not even pick this up unless it was on discount and even then I would only use it for the extra pieces I can get out of it.
I have the Volvo pneumatic excavator with power functions extension so I think this set is too similar for the price. In terms of functions I think the upcoming helicopter will be the much more interesting new set with the standalone motor. Looking forward to your review of it.
A lot people are saying it’s overpriced but I feel like that just makes for more deals. I got a killer deal and I’m happy.

in my opinion this set feels like cheap version of 42053. Old one had massive superstructure and this made the set more finished, while superstructure of red one is smaller and it isnt covering entire chassis and imo, this makes the set feels cheap and the chassis is unfinished. i prefer 42053
Same here! The LEGO technic ew160e also has motor upgradeability, where as this one doesn’t. Will you be getting this set on august 1st?
@@Unbrickme probably no, i prefer biulding MOC's than collecting sets. I can buy way more useful parts separatly, than buying set that has only basic pieces (not counting pneumatics) in colour that i dont really like in technic version. I would like to spent those 150 dollars in a better way for me, buying parts separatly.
When this was announced in June it was a $100 set and a must buy. $150 is absolutely ridiculous. I got so freaked I checked the helicopter and its only gone up $10.
The two gray pneumatic cylinders will be useful for my LEGO Technic creation that I'm planning to make. Do you remember the previous LEGO Technic 42136 set with the old school yellow trailer as an accessory? Since I have the 42136 set and I like John Deere, I will use those new cylinders to turn a trailer into a pneumatic log loader. Similar to the LEGO Technic tractor with log loader.

I am looking at the parts list to make this from the sets I own. I downloaded the instructions from the Lego website. I discovered the parts list is missing the 4 claw pieces. I have come across other sets lately that have errors in the parts lists. For example, the BMW M 1000 RR Motorrad parts list shows it has 2 red BEAM 1M W/CROSS AXLE(s), but it doesn't use any.

BTW, a possible interesting mod : one of the old pneumatic excavator had a knob that controlled at the same time the superstructure orientation and the steering wheels... Can't you try to do it? I mean, the fact that the superstructure orientation is controlled by nothing feels a bit lacking...

im presently building this kit what about instructional manual pg 119 shows cab in middlle of model not on the side just looking at it you know it would not fit or work not first error ive seen in instruction manuals🤔
It’s at Costco for $60 I’m gonna resell it for $100 probably hopefully buy more to make a bigger model

Thanks for another great review. As with the new Airbus Rescue Helcopter, for me this set looks awful. Previous similar types of set have just looked way better. I know this is a technic set, and it should be more about the functions, but as with many sets these days it just looks like the designer couldn't be arsed finishing it off. Sadly another very easy pass for me. Keep up the great content!

The problem is that it isn't even about the functions. They look awful to operate and would be about 100 times better with an air tank so you could actually use the functions without shaking it around all the time. IMO this set just cant get seriously defended by anyone - Not at that price point, anyways.

Sometimes on these vehicules, the steering wheels are at the rear ( because of the need to steer in some particularly small place) so maybe?...
The turning radius only decreases if both the front and rear pairs of wheels turn, not when just one pair of the wheels turn
@@Unbrickme I didn't meant to decrease the radius XD I was just talking about the knob being in front XD I think it's more probable that the original vehicle was rear wheel steered, like a forklift ^^
This set and the tow truck are the exact same price in the US but one has 2.5x more pieces and more functions
Whereas in the UK,it is £105,and the tow truck is £150 which is much more reasonable but still overpriced
After Lego released the tow truck which sold extremely well,why do they shoot themselves in the foot with a set like this?
Maybe LEGO set the price of this set so high to compensate for the likely low profit margin of the tow truck?

I don’t think it’s worth it for the same price you could get the tow truck with slightly better pneumatics and 6 little linear actuators and way more pieces

For me, ithink the heavy duty tow truck is way better than this, it has more functions and so much pieces for 150 dollars (i think)
I completely agree! The tow truck has 2017 pieces where as this set has 835 pieces and both of them retailed for the exact same price

I disagree, although it is overpriced it is much bigger and better than the small heavy duty excavator. Though at most this set should’ve been $100 at most

Considering that 42082 looks extremely similar only 4x bigger also it cam with motor and battery and several thousand more parts and depending where u when it was about 220 to 250
So if an extra 100 got u a much bigger set
A couple thousand more pieces and the better but older power functions that can be easily controlled with a physical remote
This latest set for 150 should be 1 and 1/2 times or 2 3rds to put it more simpler just a shame that lego

I don't think longer pneumatic cylinders would be a good idea.
The cylinder needs to have a chamber at the top to allow air pressure to retract the cylinder and through this chamber the piston of the actuator needs to go. The old pneumatic actuators(2.0) were very stubby for that reason (shorter piston => less leverage on that seal), and the longer 1.0 actuators (but with plastic shafts) were very prone to bend but instead of the chamber it would just absorb that energy. Now that they have a metal piston, they would impart an incredible amount of force on the chamber seals if it were any longer and thus get more leverage.
I'm sad that all the pneumatic sets have to be so expensive these days. When I got universal building sets like the 8042 or 8064, sure there were relatively little parts, but you got "basic" sets like that to get certain components that you could use in all your mocs, like in this case pneumatics or motors, but they were very reasonably priced and they concentrated on just 1 function and expanding your parts.
Now these sets are so expensive and if I were a kid now I probably never have gotten any of these powered up or pneumatics sets. Sure you get more per set, but the barrier of entry for these more specialized parts is so much higher.
