The character has evolved from a two-faced political correspondent ranting about the state of things behind the professional veneer, to a relatable multidimensional man just muddling through things as best he can, with all the flaws and little triumphs we all have. This change has been great for the series, and it's just the right kind of catharsis and venting we need to hear at times like this.

    • @RaefonB
      @RaefonB 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Bryans Ferry If we're gonna get a lockdown series, yeah it'd be better to have some interesting characters speaking from working-class perspectives, to highlight the actual struggles going on. I'm a fan of Jonathan Pie, so I naturally disagree with a lot of what you said there - but respect for your opinion. :) Pie speaks out on behalf of most of us, society at large, even though, yeah, his personal issues are middle-class (I envy his house and decent salary). The point of the character Jonathan Pie is his job as a broadcast journalist, so it'd be no good Tom just saying what he thinks, as himself, because we lose out on that context, which adds to the comedy.
That said, this episode was kinda weird because Pie WAS speaking more directly to us, it seemed - spoke to his son and his wife and his mum, but then not Tim or anyone specific, just to camera. Fourth-wall breaking? Or stepping away from Jonathan Pie character...?

When I was 5, Tony Blair was the Prime Minister. It took me a while to work out he was an idiot, about 12 years when I did AS Politics, to be precise. He actually seemed like someone capable of leading something, like a kindly teacher of a Key Stage 2 class, you know, a proper one with older kids.
Kids today will waste no time cutting to the chase. Boris looks like an estranged cousin of the Teletubbies who was banished from the Night Garden after sexual misconduct allegations from Upsy Daisy.

If you want to really understand the genius of this humour you need to contrast the purchase at the end of the vlog of the drum kit (Haha, get your own back time!) to the very subtle look on his face when he says 'saving people' earlier on. 'Saving people' is a priceless moment, it entirely sums up his perspective on his former wife and new partner, and his relationship with his son, the delivery is easy to miss (go back and look at it), but it is deliberate, and really 'sharp'. This is not trivial, it is genius comedy. Loving it.

The state is starting to re-open and the governor has claimed that we can’t afford to handle another lockdown in the fall... and he’s already come under significant backlash for keeping things shut as long as he did. I mean, I’m hoping we’re good by the fall, but I’m starting to feel like we should have waited maybe another week, because, even though the north and west parts of the state are probably fine, I know the greater Philadelphia region is gonna have a lot of trouble.

People seem to have lost the ability to entertain or occupy themselves.
If there was no social media, mobile phones, TV, video games, etcetera they would die of boredom or kill themselves. Before electricity I know almost everything was labour intensive but in what little free time they had they knew how to entertain themselves.
Therefore if parents have lost that ability how on earth do they keep their children busy without recourse to mostly electrically powered distractions?
When I was a child in the sixties I knew how to occupy myself during free time and I didn't spend all my time in front of the TV or playing outdoors with my peers. Real face to face conversation seems to have disappeared in many families too. When do families actually sit down and have a meal together without keeping up to date with social media?

I can relate to much of this. I purchased my niece a drum kit when she was 3 years old, and paid for lessons.
I explained to my sister in law that "the beat" was the basis of all music and thus the logical place to start. I kept a straight and serious face when I did this.
I told my little brother the truth. He was a smarmy little turncoat tattle tale mummies boy as a kid.
I am the favourite uncle to this day. My nephew took up drumming too when my niece moved on to piano.
Vengeance. Best served with education, arts appreciation and volume.

My dad's an expat who has spent the past 6 years moving from country to country.
My parents finally got a divorce last year after 4 years of them going at it. My relationship with him was greatly affected. We're much better now, things have finally gone back to normal, but seeing the way the character of Jonathan talks to his son and talks about his son remind me of my dad so much.
I've been rewatching a ton of the old videos and I've dreaded coming to this one because I knew I would start crying again. I was right.

On a slightly related note, I was interested in a discussion with an old teacher of mine who was discussing how much more demanding the distance-learning system has been on teachers. They were mentioning that in a typical classroom format, they'd introduce the classroom to a topic and within the class time (either 45 minutes or an hour and a half) they'd expect around a half of that to be spent with their students doing exercises and engaging with students on an individualised basis. Through the online format the teacher has an expectation to engage the students for the entirety of the period, much as a lecturer would instead of a teacher. It seems an interesting dichotomy between the styles of education and individualised learning between highschool and higher education; on the one hand it prepares students for university style education (if they so wish to pursue it), and on the other hand it's not the status quo of the education system and for a lot of students is inherently going to disadvantage. It'll be an interesting case study for students going onwards to higher education in a lot of aspects, I'm interested if anybody has any thoughts on this.
