Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
the weeknd is gonna flip when he sees you reviewed his album on a weekday
It’s funny because Weeknds artist name refers to the last two days of the week that we’re not currently on.
@joshuatealeaves thanks Joshua for explaining this cybernetic joke commented on Fantano's review uploaded on Fantano's TH-cam channel.

Baptized in fear has to be one of my top 10 Weeknd songs it’s so good
True
Please do a video on Peggy
@matthewtheking8989 Baptized in Fear is such a heavenly song, with such a dark subject matter. Hope Abel is OK
You completely misunderstood red terror btw, in that song he sings in perspective of his mother, how she escaped the genocide in ethiopia, gave Abel life and she still loves him and claims his innocence no matter what Abel thinks of himself.
OMG, that makes so much sense, I relistened to the song and it completely fixed it for me
Yeah every mainstream in depth album he does he misunderstands at least one track lol
he was right about the track in one sense, red terror is that ancestral trauma that his mother worked through for him to view parenthood in the way fantano described. at least thats what my high ass thinks atm
@@a_natural_darknesspretending you’ve understood every track’s intended meaning the first time you heard it is pointless

THIS is how you make a good 20+ track album. Looking at you Drake.
Hopefully that solo album is Take Care 2 cuz everyone and their mom knows Drake can't stay comfortable making generic hits now knowing that his "opps" are thriving and trying to step on his already dwindling career (kdot at the superbowl, abel releasing objectively his best album, etc.) If he can make a comeback, color me surprised ig.

@infi9626 Where’d he mention that?
yk the album is good when he has to get into the artist's history before the album's release
It's definitely important to do that given the themes on the album
He did it because it’s the weeknds last album and there are many references production wise to past eras. Putting all efforts into one last album
The context of the album requires that. You wouldn't truly understand the theme of the album if you don't understand where the character of the weeknd is coming from

Yeah totally agreed! It’s the most epic and risky mainstream record in a while I feel.
id say its a 8.9. i think some tracks kinda drags but its still an amazing album
One of the easiest 10s I've ever heard.
I'm glad y'all loved this album like I did. I will be in complete agreement about Timeless though. It's the only song that I would probably remove.
And it's really amazing how, if someone tries to explain it narratively, it might not make sense. But when listening to it, you can really feel the journey. Those glimmers of hope right towards the middle end fit it perfectly before that darker sensation takes hold for a few more records. Then it closee with acceptance, truth about who I am, moving on & finding that reconciliation.
I really felt like I experienced an epic with this album. I can't wait to see The Weeknd be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame one day. He signified a generation and really gave a style of darker R&B and Pop elements mainstream air to see that it can shine & flourish. He didn't necessarily birth it, but he will absolutely be known as being synonymous with it at the same time.

Fun fact, the final seconds of the last track, HUT, transitions into High For This (His first song released). Making his last album end in a perfect loop into his first project is insane.

It's 20 tracks and all of them are pretty much great (but timeless). It gets hard to pick favs. I don't blame him
Well if you're looking for Niagara falls haters I'm here. It's the only song in the album I don't fw. Idk why I don't like it It just doesn't work with my ears well. But hey, everything else is fire.

You get it
Yeah same
Especially since it's a 22 track record done extremely well. Abel didn't play it safe, he took the risk with his final album and he delivered. I think a decent 9 would have been very well deserved for Hurry Up Tomorrow. It's a literal masterpiece. Fantano said so many nice things about this project so him saying that Opening Night and Reflections Laughing should have been one track feels nitpicky to me and I don't get how that and Timeless take this down to a decent 8. Should have been a light 9 at least.

I loved Fantano's dedication to dive deep into the storyline on this album considering this entire trilogy is a narrative from suffering/hell to redemption/heaven. I’m reminded so much of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” the more I listened to it. although he didn’t market this as a double album, it feels like one. “I can’t wait to get there” sounds like the start of Disc 2, and I know it’s a reach and it has been floating around on the web in discussions about the last note at the end of the album sounds eerily similar to the start of “High for this”, but that just reinforces the comparison I’m talking about. Red Terror was actually about his mother escaping the Red Terror Genocides in Ethiopia and raising Abel.
The man went 12 years without any controversy, made 6 full albums, 3 mixtapes, a very well received EP, sold out shows worldwide, a HBO show 😅, dates supermodels, and is making a movie.
The true survivor of the music industry. Quit with his dignity. Hope he transitions into tv/ movies after music or releases some cool ass documentary about his career cause we lowkey don’t know anything about the dude.
He's just giving up the weeknd persona. He'll still make music probably after a long break under his own name.

One of the greatest things The Weeknd has ever done, and I've been a fan since before we even knew what he looked like. What an album! What an icon!
He is a OG TH-cam star. He dropped trilogy on TH-cam when people didn't knew Weekend.
14:28 The “Red Terror” was a political conflict that happened in Ethiopia which Ed caused his parents to flee to Canada. I think the song is more a third person POV on him from his mother’s perspective
100%- Kind of embarrassing that Ant doesn't know that...
Absolutely incredible magnum opus putting a giant bow on one of the most impressive runs in pop music history. Thank you for everything Abel. Wouldn’t have started making music without your influence. Man… what a way to go out.
Abel is just one of those artists that really deserves the success he's got, he really is amazing.
Loved the review, Anthony. My only critique is not speaking on the 2nd half of given up on me which is so beautifully crafted.
I feel like Fantano kind of misunderstood this as an album. The trilogy that was formed by After Hours, Dawn FM, and Hurry Up Tomorrow are meant to be a direct parallel to Dante’s Divine Comedy, wherein this album is The Weeknd finally shedding the things that are keeping him from heaven, and ascending there. It’s also why it’s the last album of The Weeknd, since it sees him passing on. It’s a lot less literal than you’re implying it to be.
the album was explosive, intimate, and so fucking legendary. He had such a grandiose career. it’ll go down in the history books.
In a era where so many artists are more focused on putting out repetitive formulaic music for commercial success, I'm so grateful we have artists like The Weeknd who's so dedicated to his craft and willing to take risks in order to give us such unforgettable experiences.
Red terror isn’t about him contemplating parenthood, rather it’s about the struggle his mother went through in Ethiopia causing her to move to Canada to raise him.
i think you misunderstood the song red terror, its about abel's mother surviving the red terror genocide in ethopia ,escaping and coming to Canada while being pregnant with abel
Album of the year already!!
Big Sleep is hands down one of the best tracks on this album. I so hope it gets its recognition. He goes crazy at the end.
This album is amazing I have it on repeat. Also the phone call on Reflections Laughing is Chxrry22 not Florence + the Machine
One of the most impressive things about the album and what it will not get enough credit for is how enjoyable and entertaining it is throughout its 85(!) minutes of length. This happens extremely rarely.
abel getting an 8 is the second craziest thing to happen this week, only behind the luka trade
Light 8 after that much praise is nasty work
i hurried up for tomorrow so i could form an opinion on this album.
Your interpretation of what “red terror” is about is so unbelievably off it almost discredits this entire review. This song is a critical part of the story he’s telling with this album.
This album was really something that I think fans of The Weeknd really wanted & needed. It felt profound to just hear that Weeknd like sound again that so many of us fell in love with. And his stuff that felt like the more accessible Weeknd was just as pleasing to hear.
My theory: the digital version gives us the full story, where Abel drops the persona and speaks candidly about wanting out of popstar hell, and the album ends with The Weeknd repenting. The physical edition, with only 11 songs in a different order, is just pop hits. He's trapped in limbo. The angel from dawn FM is even edited out on the physical version of "Red Terror." He's weeping in a dark room on the physical cover. The digital one? He's bathed in light, and to me that scream is the sin being ripped from his body.
Red Terror is about his mother and the events of the Red Terror of Ethiopia.
16:36 for the number
Been waiting for this. Such a deeply cinematic and emotional experience listening to this album. Feels like a modern classic we'll be looking back fondly on 10 years from now
the weeknd getting 8s back to back.... he's truly the male beyonce
The interlude on Reflections Laughing wasn’t Florence, it was Chxrry22. Florence was doing vocals on the pre-chorus and chorus prior to the interlude.
Surprised you didn't mention that this is seemingly the final album that Abel is going to do under the name "The Weeknd" as well as that final moment in the album that seems to leave this persona he is leaving behind in an uncertain fate.
Regardless, another great album from him.

I think that this album was just about everything that The Weeknd fans could have hoped for. A solid album that ties up the story from After Hours and Dawn FM, and ending this music-universe with a grand slam!
So for anybody who cares (And Fantano too), the song Red Terror is from the perspective of his mother and partly dedicated to her too. The lyrics showcase her life before and after moving from Ethiopia amidst some uneasiness in the country. The term "Red Terror" is about the bloodshed that his mother and grandmother saw in Ethiopia before they moved to Canada when she was 8 months pregnant (said in the song too). In the song he apologises to his mom for getting mixed up with drugs and alcohol from a young age, leading a not so straight life, and now how he wants to go back to being a child in her lap again.
Best trilogy of the past 20 years including, The Weeknd’s other trilogy.
I loved the Thriller sample in the intro to Hurry Up Tomorrow
I love those first 5 tracks
It’s a really solid album
melon pulling a positive theme out of without a warning is so interesting to me bc i got the complete opposite vibe from it. i interpreted it as him falling right back into his self destruction at the hands of an audience that will only love him as long as he’s killing himself (hence the line about him not wanting to be sober because he was afraid of being boring). he doesn’t know if tomorrows coming because he might die before he gets to see it, but it doesn’t matter to him because the crowd is cheering for him as he does it. he’s echoed sentiments like this in the save your tears video too.
19 seconds wow, before I finish the vid after I watched the trailer and listened to the album again it sounds even more like a soundtrack, a final album and big real movie to go with it. I'm predicting a light 9
If the album was called “To Pimp a Weeknd” it would’ve been a 10
Would've been a 10 if you reviewed it on a weekend.
😐🤦🏼♂️
The rating is kinda crazy ngl
If it was called “to hurry up a tomorrow” he would’ve given it a 10
Red Terror is not about Abel exploring fatherhood, it's about his mother raising him and escaping from Ethiopia in spite of being pregnant. He's writing from his mom's PoV. Not sure who the genius annotator was proposing that explanation. Source: comments on professor skye's review and the music video.
Good review though otherwise.
It’s the fact it loops perfectly back to High for This so you can go again that gets me! Madness!
Timeless being a least favourite is how I felt with the cover.
You Should’ve used the original cover for the image, it would’ve looked like he’s looking at Fantano
I think the official cover grew on me lately.
The OG cover clearly tried to mirror Dawn FM and After Hours, but it just looks so goofy in a way that took me out of the emersion, also hearing jokes go around like "Abel's wife beater look" didn't help 🫠.
The new one has Abel in a way more dynamic pose, with darkness and light both touching him while the title letters fade, probably from the themes of drowing in the bathtub, in alcohol and the concept of the abyss.
this albums soundscape was MASSIVE
9:31 someone please make an audio file for this part
If the album was called Kids See Tomorrow it woulda got a 10/10
It's not even the weekend yet and we have the weeknd near the week's end.
Besides Timeless and Reflections Laughing, every song is either great or straight up Weeknd’s greatest hits (most notably Wake Me Up, Enjoy the Show, The Abyss, Open Hearts, Hurry Up Tomorrow). Rare care where an album this long is actually worth the runtime, straight up Weeknd’s best album and it being his most cinematic and introspective, I’d give it a 9 honestly, near perfect final album to end on that I enjoyed so much.
Reflections laughing will grow on you I think. That first part is phenomenal
reflections actually was an instant classic for me, def top 3 on the album personally. the first part of the song is so cinematic and I love the trippy feel of it on the back end of the song sounding like a deconstructed drugged out atmosphere. travis doesn't peak my interest much these days but I loved his verse
Interesting… upon my 5th listen, reflections laughing went from being one of my least favourites, to my outright favourite. It is so flawlessly constructed, and the phone call into Travis’s verse is unbelievable. I think it will grow on you, it seems to be the consensus here… it’s just not super catchy off the bat, but a track with a ton of depth, which makes for a great long term album.
If it was called Hurry Up, We’re Pimping A Butterfly Tomorrow, it would’ve been a 10
10/10 for me
also my most fav is: "cry for me"
10:09 That’s not Florence on the phone call. You can hear Florence’s voice echoed in the background of the first part of Reflections Laughing and that’s all.
The voice on the phone call is not credited but usually attributed to Cherry22, another XO label signed artist. It’s an usual motif throughout this trilogy, as similar phone calls can be heard in Save Your Tears, from After Hours, and Less Than Zero in Dawn FM.
