I was fortunate enough to see that Swiss backhand up close (and live) at last year's US Open Qualifying Tournament, round two, where it got her through a set and a half before Sachia Vickery came back and won that day (before advancing to the third round herself, no less). Viktorija's backhand is so fluid, and she takes the ball so early so effortlessly on that wing that I'm surprised to see that she's mostly been consigned to qualifying tournaments/futures this year. She's had a nice career, but aside from a few top-ten wins throughout, she never quite turned the corner the way that several of her countrymen did over the past 10-20 years; shame, because I could watch that one-hander all day long.
It would be interesting to see what the all-time titles records would be if tennis had never allowed the two-handed backhand.
First time watching Golubic and I didn't expect that Wawrinka backhand 😮
It's more of a Gasquet backhand imo.
That was a HUGE win from Leylah....showing her skills AND her fighting spirit again....wow...

Ich sehe Leylah Fernandez gerne spielen. Aber aller Kampfgeist nützt nichts, wenn sie ihren sehr schwachen zweiten Aufschlag nicht grundlegend verbessert. So wie jetzt reicht es halt immer mal wieder für ein Viertelfinale, aber nicht für die Top ten oder gar ein Grand Slam Finale geschweige denn einen solchen Titel. Die heutige Niederlage gegen die Nr. 189 der Welt nach klar gewonnenem ersten Satz im Viertelfinale beweist das leider erneut. Wenn sie an diesem Problem arbeitet, ist viel mehr für sie möglich.

The energy Fernandez always has is quite remarkable. She bobs around and does her little prepoint warm ups exactly the same after 2 hours than she does in the first minute. Every match.
Yes, it gets annoying watching that during a match. It was awful during the US Open 2021.

*WTA what is wrong with your videos lately, only 720 and the frame rate is so low that the ball is difficult to see move. It's becoming unwatchable - you just need to save the videos in better quality before you upload. I do not believe it is 720p, maybe it is 480p upscaled. It looks like some 30 years old analog TV clips.

What a remarkable comeback from Leylah Fernandez. Professional Canadian tennis competitor has demonstrated a more robust and relentless performance than Golubic as of the second set. Particularly, when the score was 4-5(with break advantage of Golubic), Fernandez kept calm and serene, gaining 3 successive games, proceesing to the deciding set. Leylah really makes a splendid impact with her adaptability and efficiency.

I was wondering if anyone more knowledgeable than I am could answer a question for me. Has Leylah changed anything with the motion of her serve? It looks different to me…….or else my memory is really going! 😊
Looks like the starting motion of the toss has changed a bit, starting more inside of her body and her toss is so much straighter than before. Hope she can keep up the good serve. 😊

Viki is a very slightly built player. She needs more power in her game. Her serve is not powerful at all, and this alone would have got her through if she had an actual weapon there. A real shame.
