So basicly I will find lots of people on the straights overtaking me and I will just go "Too Soon Junior" and blast by them when they run out of juice. Thanks for the video Mr. Box.
IlyaBabansky Its funny even though I'm getting Vietnam flashbacks from last years I racing le mans....we almost gave up halfway through due to being taken out by an lmp1 then someone suicide bombed us,A FERRARI, forgetting left from right and turned right into us. We continued and only about 45 minutes left we got taken out...by a ferrari..oh no Pure childhood formative years leave this one behind the Ferrari is mocking me....
Think the clarification on manual vs automatic is much needed. Seeing a lot of people thinking manual means you're 100% in control of the deployment and getting confused that the electric motor is still being used. Great video, should hopefully encourage people to jump in and race these things. Lots of fear of it being too complicated - if a dumbo like me can figure it out, anyone can!
Oh god that last comment lmao. I'm looking forward to the next 24 endurance fail race to see what the pro teams do with these. My mind can't adjust to these after mostly doing historic cars lately.
When I finally loaded up the Audi at Le-Mans with my rock hard boner and twinkle in my eye was slowly taken away when I figured I was a brainlet and couldn't work the hybrid system. I slowly started to figure things out but this video really summed it up well for me, ty Empty Boox
Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to divebomb every GTE and blame them for the collision because they had a blue flag. I'll keep my headlight flash button right next to the boost button so I can boost and flash at the same time.
Great explanation. I don’t know why iRacing staff, who obviously do a great deal of research and design, don’t provide these types of explanatory videos. Granted, much of this is available when scrolling over the various menu items, but this is much easily digested. Thank you.
Only just got to my A class and had to use automatic deploy since it boost in weird places at Motegi, this has helped me in finding the keybinds for that sp thank you!
Really appreciate this video. I jumped in it not knowing a thing about this car. Saw all the adjustments and sat there staring at it all like "HUH?!?!?" I hate the fact that iRacing gives us a new car and tells us nothing about it. Am I just not finding it in the forums or somewhere? Anyway, thank you for the video. Much less intimidating now. Let's give it a go!!
So it's like turbo or nitrous boost but with electricity instead? Dang that is cool. Also, thanks for pointing out that each Hybrid system is different with different energy outputs. I initially thought all the Hybrid lmp1 cars had similar power plants.
Wonderful video, Matt. Now that I get the manual vs automatic, I'm gonna use manual as you suggested. But I did find two peculiar things with the Porsche in automatic: Around Le Mans it would consistently run out somewhere around the Porsche Curves, leaving me with no boost for the front straight. Also when I was hitting Boost Hold around Spa it wouldn't deploy automatically after that. Doesn't really matter if I'm going manual, but I found that a bit odd.
14:46 I can picture it ... a GTE driver looks in his rearview mirror and sees an angry swarm of prototypes approaching. Suddenly Wagner's Walkürenritt begins to play in the background. "Hybridocalypse Now"
Not sure why but Porsche always gives me a nostalgic feeling, it always refers back to being a kid, I never have figured it out. Anyways keep up the NiS series, definitely enjoying watching it Matt!
this is the explanation i was looking for, and a good one i might add. just got my road license up to B this season and have been racing the IR18, but that P217 has been eyeballing me and im terrified because i have no idea how to drive that thing with any degree of competency.
Thank you for making this video! I was unsure about trim setting, I was thinking it was the other way around. Great content though, everyone needs to watch this
As far as I understand when modifying your regen settings it will also slighty shorten or lengthen your braking zones and I do certainly feel it when pushing
I was under the impression that trim setting 12 was more aggressive deployment and 1 was less aggressive deployment. In the garage, when you hover over the trim options, it says: "For manual mode, offset applied to the % projected end of straight speed at which deployment is cut. 1 is -10% (less deploy), 6 is 0% and 12 is +12% (more deploy)" So does iRacing have this backwards or is this a double negative makes a positive type of thing?
Empty Box That explains why I kept running out of juice at week 13 Silverstone in the 919. I was running 4, thinking I was being conservative. Also, the brake regen on the 919 info blurb is incorrect (I believe the Audi is correct however). It says 0 is no regen and 9 is max regen. However, the scale goes from 1 to 10. iRacing defaults you at 9 so technically it isn't full regen. Not that it will be a huge difference but it's something.
What would you say is the better one of the two? Is one particularly faster on straights? Is one particularly quick in the corners? Or are they so close you cannot go wrong with either?
Manual setting 6 equals 0% trim, but automatic is not going to be at 0% trim, so manual 6 not equal automatic. 0% trim is the the setting for SoC equilibrium based on baked in data, but automatic will try to figure out the appropriate trim% for your setup, regen settings, driving style, etc, basically trying to learn based on recent laps.
LMPs, for me the master league of racing cars. Forget F1, forget GT, forget DTM. Sadly it's quite possible they are going to disappear quite soon from racing, as all teams are moving somewhere else :-( I love these beasts, even though I am an incredibly crappy racer in those.
LMP1 is likely dead... some privateers joining in, but I don't think privateer LMP1s are going to take hold. Given it's sports car racing, I think we're entering the down years after the gold years of 2014-2016.
With Toyota being the only factory hybrid this coming year it should be an absolute slam dunk. That said, Toyota's lack of luck at Le Mans is so incredibly legendary we probably will see a P2 win this year and next. LOL
The Audi can't store all that much energy, so the lack of a GU-H doesn't hurt it as badly as you might think other than weird circuits like Daytona or Watkins Glen where there just aren't enough brake zones. You still run into the same issues on the 919.
It's not, driving in VR is proof the camera is in the right place. It's a tight cockpit and the 919's wheel is particularly high / driver is particularly low.
in manual mode, the only thing that you control with the adjustment is how much is deployed, not when and where it is deployed. the car will always deploy energy by itself unless you have it turned off with the button
In the setup part of the car, there is a "offset" for the hybrid deployment. for fully manual deployment set it to -50%, the only time it will deploy automatically is 2% when you go from standstill
If you are understeering on exit focus on getting the car turned in the middle of the corner and then rocket away. Once you are on the power, you have 4WD and the thing is naturally going to want to straighten a bit.
That is what makes them frustrating to drive. I am more a LMP2 lover, simplicity, less downforce, softer suspension, more driving sensation... whats not to like (beside some sim racers not getting them and insulting them as 'boat')
I just wonder what would be like to have a multiclass race where drivers respected eachother, especially the faster classes respecting the slower ones. I'm aware this is basically utopia, but one can always dream.
We had that... 2013, Season 2, ProtoGT. It was the best damn racing experience week in and week out I've ever had. Great community at the time. It's a total joke, I'm more of a GT guy than a LMP guy, being passed constantly is more challenging!
I've had some good experiences with IMSA back in 2016. Gonna try it again this season, also the new Le Mans Series, I'll probably drive a GTE car on both series. The sweet spot is right down the middle, I'm getting sick of GT3 anyways but I'm not too familiar with the LMP1 class either, so GTE it is.
As you said they aren't much different, but the tool tip is wrong. As there is a 10, and it doesn't say 10 = off or anything. I'm not sure about the Audi, I drove it twice. Also the tool tip on the manual trim is backwards, but I think you got it correct in the video.
So basicly I will find lots of people on the straights overtaking me and I will just go "Too Soon Junior" and blast by them when they run out of juice. Thanks for the video Mr. Box.
Magenta Virtual Racing Entertainment that F and F refference tho
;)
You almost had me!?
meme never ages. ever.
Empty Box "You neva had your car!"
You forgot to add the rule where you must get taken out by a Ferrari at least once per race
IlyaBabansky Note: only applies to the R18.
ZBTEproductions Sao Paulo 2014 (although I´m not sure, whether it was Webber´s or Cressoni´s fault).

AOR xMinxG we got flipped on our roof by a Ferrari under white flag last Le Mans. They're great drivers
This is way above my pay grade
My exact thoughts. lol

Another helpful video from Empty Box with editing and production.
Oh god that last comment lmao. I'm looking forward to the next 24 endurance fail race to see what the pro teams do with these. My mind can't adjust to these after mostly doing historic cars lately.
This is like nitrous for those who come from NFS.
Terror disturbingly accurate
LMP1 for Dummies-I don't need this but I'll watch it anyway.

Empty Box: LMP1 Racing is not complicated.
Me: *i don't get it*
Incredibly useful Matt, appreciate the Sim Racing 101 vids
Very well concluded. Pretty much sums up all the small bits of info you can gather in the forums.
Only just got to my A class and had to use automatic deploy since it boost in weird places at Motegi, this has helped me in finding the keybinds for that sp thank you!
Damn...just give me Group C
We still have the Nissan GTP ! a 962c or C9 would be most welcome though.
A late 80s IMSA GTP'd 962 would be amazing, though people won't drive it anyways.
I would! :)
I would too!
(assuming they add low friction brake pads cause the Nissan's brakes keep me from driving that thing)
LOL!
Wow, really interesting video, I had no idea these cars were so complex and how much that effects strategy and how you drive the car!
which one of these cars is better in the last build?
Really appreciate this video. I jumped in it not knowing a thing about this car. Saw all the adjustments and sat there staring at it all like "HUH?!?!?" One question you haven`t answered. Does drifting recharge the boost like in Need For Speed?

Matt, this was the most useful video you have made to date.
Thank you for making this video! I was unsure about trim setting, I was thinking it was the other way around. Great content though, everyone needs to watch this
The tool tip is currently backwards in the garage page.
As far as I understand when modifying your regen settings it will also slighty shorten or lengthen your braking zones and I do certainly feel it when pushing
I was under the impression that trim setting 12 was more aggressive deployment and 1 was less aggressive deployment. In the garage, when you hover over the trim options, it says:

So does iRacing have this backwards or is this a double negative makes a positive type of thing?
Robert Tinsey yeah it's backwards but testing shows it to be true
BottomSplit Racing is correct, it is backwards from the tool tip. Easy test is to use the relative timing display.
Empty Box That explains why I kept running out of juice at week 13 Silverstone in the 919. I was running 4, thinking I was being conservative. Great stuff! Hope to see one of your iRacing new build overviews too!
Nice vid! I learnt a lot.
Which of the two LMP1's do you think is better?
If it wasn't because of the antialiasing on the shadows I would've thought this was real!

very well explained. needed one of these to simplify it for me. many thanks good sir
Oh I’m glad I’m still in a spec ford. This is complex
congrats to the new logo mr. Empty Box!
no wonder there are so few P1's in real life nowadays - they are too complex
Sounds like playing a video game inside a video game.
EXCELLENT guide, thank you so much for this!
I realized after watching this I do not know very much about hybrid engines... and i thought I did.
What would you say is the better one of the two? Is one particularly faster on straights? Is one particularly quick in the corners? Or are they so close you cannot go wrong with either?
I was mis using the boost hold botton. No i know why it wouldn't recharge! Thx Box!
Feels like a DCS tutorial...but very helpful, thx
This is one of the best videos you've done in a long, long time.
When you began explaining the fuel restrictions, I lost like what? 5 or 10 neurons?
Zak Walker considering the your difficulty in understanding things I don’t think you had 10 neurons to begin with...
This was exactly what I was looking for. Great video. Blue flag, M-Fer's!!!
Great video Matt, thanks for doing it!
nice info! isnt there a programmable booster by where you are on track as you can by using addons in assetto corsa?
Manual setting 6 equals 0% trim, but automatic is not going to be at 0% trim, so manual 6 not equal automatic.

Nooooo don't take out the GTE's!!! I was in a Ford GTE yesterday in the Le Mans series and got taken out twice by impatient P1 drivers..
Why is the cockpit zoomed in so much, it is like you are sitting on the dashboard??
It's not, driving in VR is proof the camera is in the right place. It's a tight cockpit and the 919's wheel is particularly high / driver is particularly low.

Regen can go to 10.
Only on the 919. May or may not be an actual setting as well given the tool tip clearly mentions it goes to 9.
As you said they aren't much different, but the tool tip is wrong. As there is a 10, and it doesn't say 10 = off or anything. I'm not sure about the Audi, I drove it twice. Also the tool tip on the manual trim is backwards, but I think you got it correct in the video.
