  • My first mic review!
    Introducing the MXL V67G budget recording microphone. Only going for S$250 at Luthermusic.com .
    Note: notice how it picks up the sibilances really well, especially the 's' sounds, when I'm close to the mic. Also note difference in voice tone at 0:00, and 2:44 - the former is when speaking a small distance away from mic, and latter is when speaking close to it.
    More details and sample tracks here: recordingnoob....
    NEW: MXL V67/V69ME/CR30 comparison! • MXL V67G vs V69ME vs CR30

    Yes, EQ can reduce the boost in the highs where you don't want it. However colouration and harmonics in other frequencies also come into play - EQ can't fix it all. It'll definitely not fix problems caused by inappropriately applied compressor settings, nor will it make a cheap pre-amp sound good. Getting a 'good' sound is very subjective - I'd recommend trying the microphones at the stores to see if there is a particular model that suits your ear, to reduce the 'fixing' process post-recording.

    I got mine in 2013 for $100 from B&H Audio NYC and TODAY I was looking at them there and they are NOW $89 ! Wow! Theyre Good Mics, XLR by the way. David Wills from proaudiodvd says that just a few years ago prior to 2013 they were originally $1,000.oo (thats before All the Home Recording Studios started popping up when they were selling to the Major Studios. Great Quality

    I never said that EQ would fix compressor and Pre-Amp issues. My exact words were, "Almost any variation that a mic, preamp, compressor, etc... causes prior to capture by your DAW, can be corrected digitally in the mix." Then I said, "All this stuff about boosting 5db in the highs is wasted mumbo jumbo when I can easily boost any frequency with a wide or narrow queue, very easily with a decent multiband EQ plugin." Those are two different things I said.

    i bought a pair of v67's and use them 4 everything from drum overheads to recording 8 person vocal groups to lead vocals and they have shined! mind u i also have a nuemann tlm 102 and a 103. that being said, the nuemanns are quieter have an overall more pleasing response but the v67s is no slouch. mxl gets a bad rap!!! run a nuemann through a crap pre and u get crap. run a decent mic through a great pre and u get the goods. as soon as i sprung for a U.A. pre my mic problems were solved.

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's definitely a difference in the freq response between the two - seems the GTrack gives you significant boost (5dB!) in the highs. Theoretically it would be a brighter mic, but personally with low-end condensers I'd try not to get those with too much boost in the highs, since they'd likely colour the sound more than give 'clarity'.

    Iol I make you angry, i re-phrase my previous comment to China is cool, USA is cool, this microphone is AWESOME!!! - by the way it's on sale now at amazon for $99 dollars.
    sorry if my comment made a downer on your day, if it weren't for your video i wouldn't have found this mic was on 50% off sale.

    Your vocals on this mic sound very nice. Iv'e listened to many vocal mics

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd use them more as a room mic than an overhead, but it can work too! Usually they sell overheads as a matched pair (i.e. same-ish amount of gain and response) so you don't go crazy trying to make sure they're about the same. But again, they could work :) Just make sure to face them in the right direction/angle!

  • @ShiningXwolf

    I'm looking into possibly getting this mic for harsh (heavier metal) vocal singing. Not sure how well it would stand out.
    But besides that, I don't know why but I find your voice so enjoyable to listen to xD

      for screaming i would consider the shure sm7b. Countless metal albums used the sm7b for scream vox. Its pretty much the go to for that application.

    Enthusiastic review, thanks. These mics have their place, of course, as do the Shure SMs. Unlike anyone else I know of, we use these MXLs for oral history voice recordings, and they really set our work a part from other projects. Google Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh.

    I can fix compressor and pre-amp issues with a decent Neve 1073 plugin from Universal Audio... problem solved on the 'Cheap Pre-Amp" side. I can fix compression issues all day long with the thousands of fantastic digital compressors available, including Neve from UA.
    Don't waste money on scoping out any mic over $130.00 when the Marshall MXL V67 is perfect. Look at the graphs for the Neumann u87 and the Marshall V67, and you'll see that the V67 provides everything the Neumann does.

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi, you're right that the same result can come from anywhere, but it's a known fact that products made in China can be cheaper for the same quality. They are not taking credit for the brand, only semi intelligent people would think MXL is a Chinese brand just because it's "made in China". You are getting great value in mics like these because staffing, storage, shipping etc is cheaper, bringing the final price down. It's a common phenomenon called globalisation, you might want to check it out :)

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! That's a really good deal - but make sure you test it before you buy it if they'll let you! Condenser microphones are a little less hardy than the usual dynamic mics, so be extra careful with second-hand pieces!

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd say go for this one or the AT2035 - they make a world of difference from the AT2020 for a small topup! Especially if you're recording your guitars too. The 2020 is decent for voice, but might underperform in terms of picking up the lower end for instruments.

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well it depends on whether you want a USB Mic or a traditional mic. With the G-Track you won't need to get an interface, since it can go directly into your computer's USB port :)

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can't help but disagree with comparing microphones solely by freq response curves. Each mic has its own characteristics on how it picks up sound, not just how loud certain freqs are, which is part of the reason why some prefer certain mics over others. I love the V67G, but I'd definitely get another if someone gave me a $1000 budget.
    Again, it's all subjective. So many people have compared microphones with different conclusions. As long as the end-product is good, anything can work. :)

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm using a Steinberg UR28M - its preamps are pretty kick-ass!

  • @AmandaTee
    @AmandaTee  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mattey, you'll actually need an interface as a go-between - meaning the mic has to be plugged into a hardware, and then the hardware will connect to the computer via USB. M-audio, Presonus etc have some low-budget models. Alternatively, you could consider the AT2020 USB that connects straight to the computer.

    • @AmandaTee
      @AmandaTee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Adrian! Yeah it could work! My personal preference is to have a dynamic mic (like the Shure SM57) right in front of the amp, and a condenser a bit further away. Then you can play around with the different sounds!

    Well, if you have a sound-treated and sound-proofed room, then the dynamic microphones aren't going to be much help. Condenser microphones can pick up lots of details and gives you the "natural sound" instead of the "DJ-like sound" in the Shure SM58.

  • @codking82

    how do you record the mic sound? what interface are you using ? and then what are you using to clean up and put video and audio into youtube

  • @swollenmayzor
    @swollenmayzor 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, just wanna ask if its possible to use such a condenser mic to record vocals and plug my guitar directly into the audio interface. Will the condenser mic pick up the guitar sound and make the overall sound muddy?

    • @AmandaTee
      @AmandaTee  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Melvin! If you're singing and playing the acoustic guitar at the same time It'll definitely pick up the guitar, but it shouldn't make the guitar sound muddy. The only potential problem you might have is when you're treating your vocal track - the bits of guitar in the track will also be affected! I'd actually recommend just recording your vocals and guitar with the condenser - the guitar sounds much better with a mic rather than plugged in! All you need to do is figure out the best place to put the mic so that your vocals and guitar will be balanced :)

    • @swollenmayzor
      @swollenmayzor 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amanda Tee Thanks for the reply. Can I ask on your preference between the 69me vs 67g? Although the 69me sounds very troublesome with the tube connections involved... maintenance and waiting time to warm up...

    • @AmandaTee
      @AmandaTee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Melvin Lim Hey Melvin! Actually I think it really depends on what sound you're looking for. The V69ME has that warm character to it that the V67G doesn't, and some people prefer it warm and some don't, haha! If you're not really gravitating towards either, and don't want the hassle, then maybe the V67G would be the better bet!

    0:38 The bigger the diaphragm, the smaller the diaphram, the quicker in responds to transient frequencies. The total scope of sound reacts more in unison on smaller diaphrams. The larger you go with the diaphram, the better the bass response. At least in theory.
