How Does A Vacuum Pump Gas Ballast Work - HVAC Tip

  • Quite a number of HVAC techs are not aware of how a vacuum pump gas ballast works or when to open or close it. Some HVAC techs that I have spoken to have had no idea what a gas ballast was or that it even existed on a vacuum pump.

Never knew what the gas ballast's purpose was until I saw your helpful video. I've been working with high-powered 16kW Leybold screw vaccuum pumps for a couple of years and always wondered what that gas ballast is for. For servicing, we always had to change the air filter once a year, and boy, do they clog up a lot of grime.

Yeah, open the gas ballast at the very start of the evacuation, until vac gauge reads down to about 1500-2000 microns. At this point close the gas ballast valve fully. This simple procedure will avoid condensation in the pump, prolong your oil, and increase the lifespan of your pump too.

Yes - gas ballast is always an afterthought in vacuum-pulling videos.
    Thank you.

When do we know that we have reached 1500 or 2000 microns?

Thanks for making, but I'm watching this a 2nd time and I'm only half-getting-it.
There's a lot going on here that - yes - most other instruction video gloss over when it comes to Gas Ballasts.

I have heard that the ballast is also beneficial for wet systems but then I could be incorrect. Thanks for sharing.

Well yes, to avoid the moisture embedding into the pump oil too early

Thank you for the info, it has always been something i noticed on my pump. I have a freeze dryer and i have never used this open. Now that i have seen this should the ballast in my operation remain on because each cycle can last between 24 to 40 hours so I am not sure when or if i would need to close the valve. Much appreciated.

would it bring any benefits to open the gas ballast at the end or the middle of the vacuum process?

How much are you supposed to be open the ballast? Mine doesn’t get down to 2000 microns if it’s more than cracked open. Also do you store the vacuum pump with the ballast closed?

Im trying tthe NAVAC 4 cfm pump. I replaced my evaporator, soldered using Nitrogen, checked joints with blue spray, all looked good.
So I have my analog gauges and micron guage on high side ( Refrigerant stored in Condenser) and vacuum pulling on low side. My analog went negative to 30 within 5 minutes or so. The digital Micron guage (all new kit) started at 146K or etc then finally got down to 5600 microns but stalled there for 25 to 30 minutes. Can someone reply to why it wont pull down more? Do I need to Nitro again? Does it matter which side I place vacuum? Some say guage at far end of vacuum to read line more accurately (not at pump line). Only about 25 Ft of line set. Thanks for personal reply!!

If you have refrigerant stored in condesing unit n you want to micron vacuum the piping and the evaporator unit you need to make sure the valves holding the refrigerant are super tight sealed,no micro leaks in the system or vacuum hoses, connected to both hi and low sides to avoid any restrictions in vacuum caused by the expansion device

You know after 20 plus years in the field and all these new battery powered Bluetooth powered devices you think somebody would automatically add in a gas ballast that would open and close at the correct pressures or microns should I say because sometimes on large systems like my units which are 200 ton plus when I'm pulling a vacuum I'm pulling the vacuum for a long time and sometimes I can't be sitting there for hours it would be nice for it to do it itself like back in the days when they had that little adapter so you could recovery refrigerant up to 80% of a tank and have it automatically shut off that didn't really go as planned

Should the gas ballast be open or closed right as we actually turn the pump on?

  • @TheNYgolfer

I have a YELLOW JACKET 93600 which does not have a gas ballast valve. I'm wondering if it's possible to install one by drilling and tapping in the proper location.
    Anyone ever tried this?
