Do monks these days still do stuff like brew alcohol? My impression of modern monks is that they are solely devoted to prayer. But my impression of medieval monks is that they prayed, but also did other things like copying books, and brewing alcohol, and caring for the sick.
I think the cloistered orders focus on prayer while non closistered orders focus on the mission of their order. for example the local Franciscan sisters in my area were responsible for building the Catholic hospitals and and medical universities within the past two hundred years.
I believe that since the advent of industrialized society, the need for selfsufficiency has largely disappeared, and so labor these days is mostly intellectual or more creative. Doing some light cursory reading though, Benedictine monks do their own gardening, cooking and repairing and caretaking of their facilities as well as reading, studying and prayer. So while the old monastic estates are probably a thing of the past, the spirit of St.Benedict are still enforced and kept.

Be prepared for the monks not to speak to you for the most part, it's part of the rule not to. The guest master will speak to you and should be friendly, he will introduce you to more monks if you ask.
My hometown was founded by Irish immigrants in the mid-1800s but the town itself has a French name. That's because of St. John Neumann who was Bishop of Philadelphia at the time. He was known for bringing in religious orders from Europe, especially France. The town was built around the local Catholic parish which sits pride-of-place in town and the priests gave the town its name.
I grew up in a Dominican run parish and always went to Mass so I have a bit of bias towards that Order. But I love how each order is unique in its own way, and there’s not a wrong way to go about honoring Our Lord. There’s something for everyone ❤
My favourite are the franciscans. Because of Francis of Assisi, first G with stigmata, either it truly happened or he was up to something and I'm ok with both alternatives.
Fun fact, the heads of the monastic orders (the abbot general, and in the case of the Benedictines the Abbot of Montecassino specifically) and the mendicant orders (the superior general, or in their absence the procurator general) are members of the papal chapel, which means they are allowed to take part in papal ceremonies if they happen to be present. Two members of the Papal Household are also always drawn from the religious orders - the Theologian of the Pontifical Household (aka the Master of the Sacred Palace, the pope’s personal theologian) has always been a Dominican since the time of St Dominic himself, who was the first to hold this office. The Apostolic Preacher (the only person allowed to give a sermon/homily to the pope) is always a Capuchin. Before 1968, the Sacristan of the Apostolic Palace (the papal sacristan) was always an Augustinian, and the Confessor of the Pontifical Family (the pope’s personal confessor) was always a Servite.

@@JamesPreus Bishops like tetzel did undefensable things, but that doesnt justify to change the base of the Holy Sacrifice of the Eucharisty, as Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. St. Paul was pretty clear at 1 Corinthians 11:18-34 when writting the tradition about the fraction of the bread, that is, the death of the Lord, until He comes. If someone receive it without reflection or wtihotu recognizing as the Body of Christ, is receiving the damnation instead, not the eternal life. Few priests still understand the climax of the mass as same as Calvary, like 2000 years ago. During it, still done for every generation of sinners, Jesus is taking punshinment in our place for our sins, yet not suffering, as slain lamb, its like a time machine that transport us back to 2000 years ago. The priest also say the words of the centurion before receiving the Body: Lord, I am not worthy for you to enter my home, but say the word and I will be saved, (3x times while punching the chest 3 three times). Our ancestors (fathers of the church), since the roman empire was pagan, always taught that was the Flesh of Christ during the mass, from the consacreted bread. Why people are losing this memory? Many ortodoxes communities still saved this knowlegde of the sacrifice and still did the rituals before making ties agains with the community of Rome, centuries after the schism of 1054. The Siriac-Malabar Rite (Indian christians) came back after 5 centuries... and their love for the eucharisty didnt changed: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. Or we do accept the gospel of Christ saying His Flesh bring eternal life John 6:58, or we reject it as some disciples did in John 6:66. Jesus didnt said "hew come back, its a parable, i need to teach you the meaning like i always do, it was symbolic"

One of my friend became a monk here in Tuscany Italy, and they produce grappa, wine, vinsanto and others
Yes, they do. Also they make bread, cheese, salami, beer, wine, leather products, etc. Sadly they don't build cathedrals anymore.

This is the way brother
So many monastic orders started in Italy truly the house of catholicism and christianity

Noticeable that you have to be taught, not even grammar do you know.

I’m going to be spending a few weeks living in a Benedictine monastery later this year lads, super excited
One of the mid ways to waste time.

The Dominicans scare us Benedictines lol.
You put my entire playlist in the video xD

Francis of Assisi was often called "alter christus" (other Christ) due to his extreme asceticism. There's a bunch of insane stories about him.
The Franciscans are a truly holy order, but if you look into Benedictine and Cistercian, that is true monasticism and glory of God's earth.
Cistercians founded my hometown

_Contemplare at contemplata aliis tradere_ 💪🏻
That's where "trade" comes from. Latin, "pass (to others)".
Bread Boys need to make more content with this
You should do Medieval Order of Nuns soon.
I love it
Camaldolese!! Saint Romuald pray for us!
I am belong to the 3rd Order of the Franciscan Order here in Philippines.😊
My favourite - Jesuits, eventhough they are not medieval.
It’s quite sad what happened to the Jesuits. They’re one of the few Orders that doesn’t have a female wing. Purely masculine virtue.
Nor monastic or mendicant; the jesuits are clerics regular.
The music is nice!
Can you make a video about Christian philosophers?
Wow… great to see the Paulines… who still exist… mentioned for the first time in 800 years
Most of Latin America follows Dominican and Franciscan or combined
What do you think of Shema monks?
Mendicants mentioned, nice
you cover the orthodox sties of monks
What is the name of the hymn/chant at 0:51?
Anyone have the sources for all the music in this vid?
it's in the description of the video
What about the monks of the orthodox church?
Dominicans here 😎🇩🇴
Megaloschemos monk?
I'm thinking of joining the francsicans ngl
basilian monks?
Where is the schema?????
Carthusians are my favorite

Augustinians are my favorite, due to my Lutheran faith.
Do you know the Joke with the Augustinian Hermits and Canons?
Luther deserted the order. He was a heretic
