A few years ago while walking home from ministry, a man yelled to me from his pickup truck, "You're my only hope." I once heard a Costco employee telling another employee, "Check out Obi wan Kenobi on aisle 16." As Franciscans, who are called to be peacemakers as St. Francis of Assisi was in the 13th century, we are not allowed to a carry a light saber on our cord. Besides, the weight of a light saber makes the cord sag too much.
Is that the second part? Not many people know that there's a second part to "Live long and prosper". It's "Peace, and long life." which to me is kind of a cop out. That's the best the writers could do? It's redundant.
Many years ago my youngest son wanted to be a monk for Halloween. As he trick-or-treated through the neighborhood, most adults thought he was a Jedi. He confused them when he said he was a monk. Eventually, he gave up and answered, "Yes, I'm Obi-wan".
I had the opposite situation. My mom helped my dress up as Obi-Wan and everyone thought I was monk. Apparently your son and I should have gone down each other's neighborhoods instead!
I too am an atheist, and was drawn to this as I was honestly confused by the friar/monk bit at first (Thank you for clearing that up!) and knew plenty about the Jedi (very nice work with the language assist on all three!). The fact that I DM a tabletop RPG's (D&D, Pathfinder and many more) had me wondering about monks (I know they don't really engage in martial arts training, unless it's Eastern Religion monks-which is where that idea came from).
There actually have been militant Christian monks in the past, but the DnD Monk is definitely based on the Shaolin monks in China. Shaolin monks were militant historically and still practice martial arts, but most Buddhist monks don't practice martial arts like them. So it's sort of a square is a rectangle, rectangle isn't always a square situation.

The Jedi robes are based on Japanese/Zen robes of jubon (undershirt), kimono, and koromo. Every time I put mine on and look at myself in the mirror, I go, "The power to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force". Very cool video.
Somewhat ironically, the "Monk" look of Jedi is just a happy coincidence of the first film being filmed in Tunisian desert. Lucas liked the local djellabah-like hooded dress they use there, so they dressed Owi Wan the same way.

I'm from Cameroon in Africa 27 of age, always wanted to become a Franciscan friar, today I live and work in Dubai UAE. I love ur videos frater. I will love to know more about the Roman catholic church and the live of Franciscan as I wish to teach others on that
This helped me clear up a mistake I made the other day actually. I assumed someone was a Jedi on the street just because they had a long robe out on the street and a lightsabre, but he informed me that he was just a friar actually. Interesting!
I'd always thought that friars and monks were the same thing, so this was quite helpful and informative! Also I think people just really wish that Jedi were real so that's why they keep doing it.
Wishing Jedi were real is one thing but I rather suspect the majority of people learn about Jedi through the movies long before they see a friar or a monk.
I have very recently come across these videos and love them. I am a Protestant and not interested and converting to Catholicism. However, I love this friendly and relatively open minded way of allowing all of us to learn more about Catholicism and your views on both secular and non-secular matters. Very enjoyable and educational. Thank you.
What a great video! The force is strong with this one! I love the fact that you are well versed in Star Wars lore on top of Catholicism. In this day and age of pop culture, the Jedi Order is an effective frame of reference. I have learned more about both the Jedi Order and Catholicism from you than from anyone else. I love the comparisons! You quote Star Wars lore to we sci-fi enthusiasts the way Paul quoted Greek poets to scholars on Mars hill (and for those reading this, it's not the planet! it's that sermon by Paul found in Acts Chapter 17). Okay, perhaps you're not the Apostle Paul, but I'm just sayin' that if it worked for him, it works for you. Like Paul, you speak as a Hebrew when among Hebrews, as a Gentile when among Gentiles, and in your case, as a total sci-fi nerd when.......we'll you get the picture. I not Catholic, and yet here I am subscribing! Thanks!
Good video. It’s fascinating how many different interpretations of Gods book there are and how different people and groups choose to honor him. The Jedi part is just hilarious.

Well done with your modern day successful use of the internet / TH-cam from where all age groups can be found including the lost sheep like myself.
Love it! Nice treatment of a fairly confusing topic. My understanding has always been that friars, monks, and hermits are all very different, yet are all types of "monks" falling under the western "monastic" tradition. "Monk" being used colloquially, even accademically, as an umbrella term. I love it when people call me a Jedi (when I'm in the habit) as it has often been a fun segway into teaching about the Gospel life of a mendicant Friar. I think there is even a fun subtle nod to St. Francis' flirtation with knighthood and chivalry.... Thank you for your work, Brother. Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year+
Here's an idea for a video. Why aren't there militarized orders of monks anymore like the Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Saint John of Malta, Teutonic Knights? If the Catholic church had modern orders of knights doing good in the world through military means I think a lot of suffering could be stopped. Imagine if the Church sent knights to fight ISIS years ago. They could have protected and evacuated the Christians in Iraq who ISIS was hunting down. Of course I'm talking knights wearing body armor and carrying guns not suits of armor and carrying swords.
Maybe it's just the Franciscan in me speaking but I just think that what the world needs is not more guns, it's someone to put the pieces back together and prevent more violence. Nations are more than capable of defending themselves, but often they are not capable of making sense of the world, how to end violence, and how to overcome pain. That's where our "battle" lies.
That's all well and good but ideals are peaceful and history is violent. There is evil in the world and it must be fought. When the devil is defeated on one front he manipulates men elsewhere in the world to do his work and so must be fought there too. Until Christ returns and rules on the earth there will always be war on the earth.
Well honestly it's because those orders are no longer needed to defend Christendom like they were in the past. It would be a massive waste of resources for the Vatican to put whats required for the training and maintaining of an army. Modern wars are much different then they were in the past. Air superiority and technology are essential and the Vatican just doesn't have the funds for that. Also Christ is the Prince of Peace, God doesn't desire conflict or war between humans unless it's absolutely necessary. I say this as a Catholic who's joining the military and shipping for bootcamp in a few months.
Also side note the Vatican never really officially had Knights trained and funded by the church itself. Rather most of those orders you mentioned originated as secular forces under feudal lords. Not saying those men weren't devout and part of the church, but that they weren't part of the church in the same way that say Priest are.
thank you for your posts, br. casey .always tackling interesting topics in a very entertaining way. just as a bynote - you mentioned, rightly, that carmelites and dominicans are also friars but neglected to mention that their habits, unlike that of your (or the augustinian) order, consist of a tunic, leather belt, scapular and, at certain liturgical or ceremonial functions, a full length cloak. conclusion would, i guess, be that, as the proverb says, one ought not judge a book by its covers.
Thank you for this. Now I know the difference between Friars and Monk. Before watching this I always thought Monks and Friars are the same. Please continue to make wonderful videos. I'm a Catholic. God Bless you. 😊
I didn't really choose any of them. What I speak about in this video is generic information regarding the overall branches. There are many types of friars as well.
I'm not much of a believer if at all, I'm not much of a fan, however I like this mix up and I also like learning. Plus I kinda stumbled upon another video before this... Although this is not my third video from the channel, I decided to subscribe anyway. Keep up the good work.
I love how you carried on with the Jedi all the way through.

I gotta admit, this guy is seriously cool. Love the Jedi references. Clearly a fellow Star Wars nerd. God Bless.

You have great sense of humor! This was so wonderful and funny! Thanks!
2:39 -- Jedis don't have time machines... you're thinking of Time Lords
thank you for your posts, br. casey .always tackling interesting topics in a very entertaining way. just as a bynote - you mentioned, rightly, that carmelites and dominicans are also friars but neglected to mention that their habits, unlike that of your (or the augustinian) order, consist of a tunic, leather belt, scapular and, at certain liturgical or ceremonial functions, a full length cloak. conclusion would, i guess, be that, as the proverb says, one ought not judge a book by its covers.
I guess the real jedis were the Templars..
Fr. Casey went as far as to explain the origin of the Jedi. He's an absolute madlad, a Father, yes, but an absolute madlad too
Spoken like a true Jedi
Star Wars came out in 1977, The Franciscans started in 1209. Star wars stole the robe look.

Thank you for this. Now I know the difference between Friars and Monk. Before watching this I always thought Monks and Friars are the same. Please continue to make wonderful videos. I'm a Catholic. God Bless you. 😊
Interesting that you chose the Cistercian/Trappist branch of the Benedictine tree....and then there are the Eastern varieties...
I didn't really choose any of them. What I speak about in this video is generic information regarding the overall branches. There are many types of friars as well.
This video was just amzing!
And so entertaining.
May the force be with you! 😊

Awesome! Hope you enjoy!
This is exactly what I hoped this video would be. Amazing lol. For weapons also, Rosary vs lightsaber.
This is great.
"May the Force be with you."
"And also with you."
Thanks this video really helped me in deciding my vocation. I'm gonna be a Jedi. A holy one of course
Great choice! 👏🤗
May the force be with you, always.

I'm not much of a believer if at all, I'm not much of a fan, however I like this mix up and I also like learning. Plus I kinda stumbled upon another video before this...
Although this is not my third video from the channel, I decided to subscribe anyway. Keep up the good work.
