80s British pop. Our dance club music. Heavy synthesizer sound for smaller groups. Brit pop dominated the clubs. Pet Shop Boys did that song in Allstate commercial…. Let’s Make Lots of Money.

Try “what have I done to deserve this “ a great duet with dusty Springfield, pet shop boys remind me so much of my schooldays. I believe this is about the rich girls from the west end of London meeting the rougher east end boys, coming from different worlds but coming together in night clubs ect, I stand corrected if that’s not right.

Pet Shop Boys is one of the biggest European pop groups of all time. Songs like Opportunities, Suburbia, It's a Sin, What have I done to deserve this?, Heart, Domino Dancing, Left to my own Devices, New York City Boy and their amazing covers of Always on my Mind, Go West and Se a vida E (That's the Way Life is) are pop classics of the music history.

In the 90's I went to a U2 concert in Oakland with 2 opening acts. They were the Sugarcubes, an Icelandinc band, and Public Enemy. On the way home on the train a couple of big thug looking guys were talking about the concert and they asked me if I went and did I like it. I told them yes and we talked about the concert and they were so blown away by the Sugarcubes! We talked for about 20 minutes and I let em know about differet bands and stuff cause they wanted to hear more cause it was cool! I just love when people are willing to go out of what they know and try new stuff and love it! That is why I am loving watching you guys! Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls” is a song that was heavily inspired by “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash. Anyone familiar with that classic track would recognize it as one of the first raps which read like a social commentary. And that is fundamentally the same goal the Pet Shop Boys had in mind with “West End Girls”. Or looked at from a different perspective, in reality this track doesn’t read like a song about “girls” at all. Rather the titular “West End girls” and “the East End boys” referenced later in the track allude to the two contrasting economic realities of the Pet Shop Boys’ hometown of London, England. More specifically, the West End was the well-to-do section of the city, while the East End was the exact opposite.

More Pet Shop Boys tracks to listen to below. (They haven't really done many bad songs so this is just the creme de la creme in my view. They aren't all singles but the ones that aren't demonstrate how clever they are). Chris Lowe is up there with Vince Clarke as a synthesizer master. They were the pioneers of many sounds that are still used in tracks today.
    "It's Alright"
    "Dreaming of the Queen"
    "Being Boring"
    "One Thing Leads To Another"
    "Jealousy"
    "So Hard"
    "Left To My Own Devices"
    "Rent"
    "Losing My Mind"
    "The Theatre"
    "The End of the World"
    "It Couldn't Happen Here"
    "I'm Not Scared"
    "I Want a Dog"
As I mentioned, some are not singles but album tracks. But take 'One Thing Leads To Another' as an example of their greatness. Listen to the track, then pull up the lyrics and read the verses from the bottom line upwards.

    Pet Shop Boys
    -Formed in London in 1981
    -Synth-pop duo
    Neil Tennant (singer)
    Chris Lowe (keyboard)
    -100+ million records
-Chorus was actually originally written as a rap but it sounded way better sang.
-The song was performed by Pet Shop Boys at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.
-In 2005, the song was awarded Song of The Decade between the years 1985 and 1994 by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
-Huge club song & an absolute staple song of the 80's.
    LYRICS:
"The song's lyrics are about class, and inner-city pressure. Tennant later said that some listeners thoughts the song was about prostitutes, but was actually, "about rough boys getting a bit of posh."
"Sometimes you're better off dead, there's a gun in your hand and it's pointing at your head". The lyrics were inspired by TS Eliot's poem 'The Waste Land'"
Tennant later said of 'The Waste Land': "What I like about it is, it's the different voices, almost a sort of collage. All the different voices and languages coming in and I've always found that very powerful. So on 'West End Girls' it's different voices. The line 'Just you wait till I get you home' is a direct quotation."
One of their favorite hangouts (The Kings Head & Dive Bar) gets a mention in the lines:
    "There's a madman around
    Running down underground
to a dive bar in a West End town"
"The lyric 'From Lake Geneva to the Finland Station', refers to the train route taken by Vladimir Lenin while being smuggled by the Germans to Russia during World War I. It is assumed that the lyric was inspired by the book To the Finland Station by Edmund Wilson."

This song always reminds me of in the late '90's when I was driving south on i95 into Boston. A pickup truck on the other side of the highway doing 100+ smacked into one of the jersey barriers they move back and forth to change the number of inbound and outbound lanes during commute hours, flipped into the air sailing over my car raiding down concrete bits all over the place, and landing upside-down on top of the car that was tailgating me.
It's strange the memories music can trigger.

It’s about London. The East End is working class, the West End is high class.

If you'd been alive and living in London in the 80s you'd understand the meaning of the song perfectly

This is slightly posh gay British people going to New York in the early 1980s, picking up what is going on in the clubs and in rap/hop-hop, working with a producer there using the latest drum machines and synths - I think the original version was with Bobby Orlando. West (posh) and East (poor) is class divide in London.
