Ah, the banned song that all of us 10 year olds knew every word to. Not to mention the number of "Frankie Say Relax" shirts at school. The good old days. They really need to reset the world to the 80s and keep it there.

What did we just watch ?! The answer is probably the most iconic song of the 80s - a time when there wasn't the same political correctness we have now , although this song did shock some at the time and got to No 1 despite being banned by the BBC . Worth listening to their follow up " TWO TRIBES " which also went to No 1 and RELAX re-entered the charts and reached the No2 spot at the same time . Just to give you an idea of how popular this tune was it entered the British charts TWICE in 1984 then again in 1985 THEN AGAIN in 1995

Relax didn’t re enter the U.K. chart. It started its chart ascent in December 1983, and entered the top 40 in January 1984, making No1 for 5 weeks, then dropped down the 40 by April and started to climb back up during May/june 84 just before Two Tribes entered No1 for 9 weeks.
Relax was number 2 and remained in the top 40 until September.

We must be the same age! I was 10 too when this song peaked. Couldn't tape it from the Top 40 countdown like other chart hits because Simon Bates, Gary Davies and other DJs wouldn't play it. Which just impressed us kids even more! The song sold an absolute shit ton and just would not leave the charts for a whole year :D

There was A LOT of controversy surrounding this song. In fact in 1984 BBC Radio in the UK banned the song after one of their well known DJs refused to play it. The band originally denied that the lyrics had a sexual connotation but I think they evenutally just stopped commenting on the lyrics at all. And the recception here in the USA wasn't much better, but the song is so catchy that it was still really popular and it's stood the test of time. These days I doubt anyone would bat an eye about the lyrics.

It's one of my fave dance tracks. Too bad reactors choose to react to this UK video that was banned for the content. It was never shown in North America, there's an official video without any of the controversial stuff in it. The great music was totally ignored because of the content.

I was always amazed when this song got played without editing on the radio back in the day. It is one of the most explicit lyrics songs I have ever heard on the radio, and the 80s wasn't woke or particularly gay-friendly. I mean people used to get bent out of shape by Twisted Sister videos being too violent and Ozzy Osbourne had to go to court to explain that his song 'Suicide Solution' was an anti-drinking song. I will always remember one of my high school classmates that was really into this band. He always dressed really crazy. One time he showed up in a full dark green Soviet trench-coat uniform along with bright red rubber boots!

    • @flatebo1

We had more progressive attitudes towards homosexuality in the United Kingdom in the 80’s. They did ban the song on one radio station and actually cut the video, the original flooded the camera with “well you know” A LOT!! lol! But I had the shirts & danced my butt off to this song. It’s just so dancy lol! I was 16! A lot of searches are saying it was banned in the UK. I grew up there & other than what I’ve already said, it most certainly was NOT!! I’m 55 now & love it just as much, good music is good music. I love you guys reacted to this. I love your channel. Xx

The '80s wasn't woke but you don't have to be woke to be gay-friendly. There was a very strong gay influence on the '80s pop culture and music, and Relax is just a particularly overt example. There was a gay club near my university that had an "Alternative Dance Night" once a month where they encouraged straight people to come, and it was very popular with the dance crowd.
No, the '80s wasn't woke. But is wasn't uptight and took itself too seriously, either. I guess you could say, the '80s were "Relaxed."

    • @norwegianblue2017
      @norwegianblue2017 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@submandave1125 Well said. Yes, the 80s was definitely less uptight in many ways and people had thicker skins when it came to jokes. People didn't take everything personally. It was more like "What's that guy's problem?", shrug and move on.

Crazy thing is they likely would have sunk without trace if the BBC hadn't banned the song from Top Of The Pops-instead this & two follow up songs went to number 1 in 1984 & this one even went back up the charts during the summer to number 2 behind their even bigger follow-up hit hit Two Tribes.

It was already at No. 6 when they 'banned' it - I hardly think it would have sunk without trace! John Peel and Kid Jensen still played it all through the 'ban', and yes, the BBC's prudishness only fuelled interest in the song, and it became an emblem of youth/gay/non-conformist rebellion. Totally agree about Trevor Horn - "The Man Who Invented the Eighties" - as a producer he had the midas touch.

UK in the 80s- couldn't get a more literal song than this. Relax....when you want to come! Every schoolkid knew this song inside out. Glorious.

This was actually banned from airplay in its native UK when it hit No.1 in early '84. I was 10 years old and I remember the chart countdown finishing at No.2 because the DJs of the time refused to play it!
The ban served them well in the long run though. It became the 2nd bestselling UK single of the entire 1980s , hahaha!

I grew up in San Francisco in the 80's when these kinda dudes were your parents best friends, your classmates older brother, your neighbors, (etc), and everyone was just chill with each other. So this video was normal everyday life to us kids back then, lol. And I so love watching people react to this video, just cuz of how their jaw drops and you can tell they're into the beat of the song but can't get passed what they're seeing =)

🤣🤣🤣 I was a teenager at the time, the video ran across Mtv without problems and we used to dance it in clubs.
I think that most of us learned the lyrics by heart and being perfectly aware what was it all about... Maybe we were a bit freer and "open" than young people are now 😉 Just for info, I am Italian. And Italy at the time was not exactly that open minded. But it was an incredible period, thinking also of Jimmy Sommerville (Bronski Beat/the Communards), Culture Club, Wham! and other artists who paved the way...
Fun fact: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - among others - has a gorgeous ballad, "The Power of Love". My class was taught and analysed the lyrics by a Brit literature teacher during a summer high school camp... And 40 years later still here with the lyrics engraved in my brain ❤️

Frankie Goes to Hollywood were pretty much a band of talentless nobodies with a great singer.
They were "spotted" and turned into a huge global dance pop sensation by the genius of bassist/keyboard player/singer & producer Trevor Horn. Those huge hooks and epic basslines (check out the track "Two Tribes) are all him. Trevor Horn's list of credits is endless. As well as Frankie he is responsible for Video Killed the Radio Star, The Art of Noise, also working with Yes, ABC, Seal, Dusty Springfield, Malcolm McLaren, Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Marc Almond, Cher, Tina Turner, the list goes on. He has also produced a huge list of hit movie soundtracks, and is credited as one of the key men in introducing the use of sampling in pop music.
He is one of those magical figures in music who works behind the scenes but is able to spin dogshit into gold, which is exactly what he did with Frankie. Around 84/85 they came out of nowhere and were HUGE.
Theres a story which may or may not be true that after failing to record an album with Frankie themselves, Trevor Horn scrapped everything & brought in Ian Dury's backing band to re-record everything, then scrapped all of that too & re-recorded the whole thing himself, which ended up being the album which got released. Its called Welcome to the Pleasuredome, and it's an amazing album. The work of a great singer (Holly Johnson) and a GENIUS musician/producer - Trevor Horn.

yeah first video was the one we saw the 2 react, It was banned, the second video mite be the concert before the lazer video witch was the 3rd, and the 4th was like a soundtrack to a porno / adult film witch is called Body Double witch sadly the box office of the film didn't do so well doing 8.8 million dollars, even though It's now considered to be a cult film.
