Anyone who wasn’t in the slightest bit moved or emotional about this event, hearing about and seeing for themselves the bravery of those young men and then seeing those same soldiers as the veterans they are now, sitting in the “audience”, - those men and women who fought for the freedom we have and appreciate, who deserve so much more than our thanks, gratitude and respect, well……. He’s able to give great speeches because he appreciates what people (in his audience) did and sacrificed. He doesn’t have to curry favour for votes, as politicians do. This gives him enormous latitude to write and speak from the heart.

I am glad you are not one of those Americans that believes that you came in late to both wars and somehow singlehandedly won the whole thing for us and the previous 3 or so years (depending on what war) of sacrifice meant nothing. Good on you mate. Much love from Great Britain. I love our allies across the pond.

They were “The Greatest Generation.” These young men, some just in their early 20’s, gave their all, literally and figuratively. The death toll was immense. It’s lovely to see that there is still a few from this generation alive to make this trip. I wonder how many will be alive this time next year, as most are 100 years old. Freedom isn’t free, and we should always be thankful for what these men did, because without their sacrifice, most of us would not be here today living in a free world, rather than living under the crushingly brutal and and oppressive autocracy. Great response, Connor.

Completly agree with you about seeing that old chap smiling. The pat on his shoulder, the kiss on his cheek and his smile made me smile too!
Great speech remembering the greatest generation.
You would have thought though, that given this electronic age we live in, you would have seen the end of speeches written on paper - especially in the wind!
My father was on a ship that was hit by shell fire from one of the on-shore batteries. The ship had embarked from the Thames Estuary and was 4½ miles off Dover when it went down. Many men were lost but my Dad survived and whilst swimming, he found a young officer who'd been severly wounded when the ship was hit. His right arm had been completely lost, so my Dad now had to try to save both his own and the officer's lives. By the time he was rescued, about 2 hours later, he'd almost swum back to Dover. He was awarded the Military Medal but never claimed it although he did have the citation.

If there aren’t any veterans left when D-day hits its 100th Anniversary we must mark the occasion with remembering them as we do every year. Not to mark it with a concert, but a day of reflection for them and their memories.
Thank you to all the veterans from WW1 to the present day for your sacrifice in protecting our freedoms. You will never be forgotten.

Yes, she will look familiar. She is Dame Helen Mirren, and she was the host for this event. This event took place in the morning of 5th June in Portsmouth, where all the troops were assembled 80 years ago. There was another event that evening from the cemetery in Bayeux, with music, readings, and the headstones were illuminated - very moving. There was also an amazing drone display screened from Portsmouth. King Charles then gave a speech at another ceremony at the National Memorial, Gold Beach in Normandy the following morning, with remaining veterans given pride of place. All worth checking out.

I often think about all those that died through the war, many wars in many different ways, that none of the fallen ever knew the outcome, never had that feeling or knowing that it was worth it for the sake of other’s that there own sacrifice made the difference yet every single life lost made it possible for the freedoms we have today & I hope that everyone takes some time out of there life to stop & really think about that, as tough as life can be & it is harsh but if your reading this then your still above ground & breathing so let’s all make the most of it & what we do have while we still can because it could always be worse.

A brilliant speech and graciously delivered. The kings acknowledgment of , not only the D Day campaign, but those in other parts of the world, so much appreciated. My farther fought in Burma, often referred to as “the forgotten war” and my mother who served in the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corp” as a ward sister in a tented hospital with the 8th army in North Africa, (her troop ship having been torpedoed on the way out) Sicily and Italy where devastating battles were ensuing ,at the same time.
We should never forget the sacrifices of all those who served pan in no matter what capacity, for the freedom we enjoy now. The generations following must be taught that freedom comes at a price and the best way to honour those who have gone before is to live lives with humility, dignity and grace with a spirit of service to others.
This may look a tall order when we look around at the self centred behaviours of many in the world today.

Hi Connor, I'm glad you reacted to one of the awesome videos I recommended to you on this major Anniversary.
King Charles's speech was very good, and I appreciated that he did mention the many civilians who helped in making D-Day possible, namely those in the Résistance who risked and often lost their lives, gathering and passing intelligence, sabotaging ennemy infrastructures, etc. It is not often mentioned by the Allied who focus on the military effort, "forgetting" these many civilian major, yet discreet actors.
On this Anniversary, across the Channel, forever thankful France honored the American Veterans who were flown in (unfortunately, one of the old gentlemen died during the trip ... may he RIP, and President Macron had a word for him too, before he decorated 11 (I think) US Vets with the Légion d'Honneur, France's highest honor recognition.)
Well, after every one of such events, one says "never again, that was the last one" ... until the next ... Humankind just cannot help but fight each other ...

The UK has not forgotten the vital contribution of many French civilians, not just in the Resistance. The recently constructed British Normandy Memorial includes, in the North West corner, a memorial which specifically commemorates the many French civilians who lost their lives in support of or, as a result of fighting on and, following, D Day. The exact number is not known but, it is certainly more than 20,000 people.
HM Queen Camilla and Mme. Macron laid floral tributes at the memorial following the main UK remembrance service on 6th June.

Connor, the King made an excellant speech emphasising the contributions of everyone, didn't matter where they came from, what sex they were what religion they believed, something we should all get our heads around now. It's been a very emotional couple of days, see if you can find the act of remembrance at the British and commonwealth memorial in France that the King attended with President Macron.

I like how you summed up at the end using logic, because it does look scarily/very tense at the moment. Especially when alot of kind of social gatherings through marches and protests about a certain Jordan river and sea chant seems similar in a way to how the last big one started. The mentality behind both ideologies would boil down to the same outcome if ever successful. Honestly I think the long game has been played and is still being played to get certain people and ideas into the norm, using social conscript. It is kind of working to some degree if you go by what has been happening in my capital city every Saturday and on college grounds over in your cities etc. They seem to be a similar type of gullible people that have no concept or knowledge of what the history is and what might happen to them after being used. Sorry to be abit crude, but rooftops as an example and beliefs.

Young people today need to know about this, but unfortunately a lot don’t and some say it’s glorifying war by remembering it. They have no idea of the world we could be living in if these brave men and women, from all faiths and allied nations hadn’t made the supreme sacrifice. Thank you Connor you are always very respectful.

Wise words Conner . I think as you do as a strange logic tells us that lessons will not be learned by some of those who rule which today is self evident. We may never see the horror of WW2 again or we may see something so much worse and in both cases the invention of the nuclear weapon will be responsible for long lasting peace or total destruction or to paraphrase for how long M.A.D. continues to work.

I hadn’t watched the king’s speech until now , it was touching and very brave of young men and women some as young as 16 or 17 and what I’ve heard some young people 14 years old lied about their age so as they could fight for our country . I have a massive respect for these people, some never returning to their families. I often wonder how people that age now would react now ,I think many would be running away in the other direction . Nowadays youths don’t have respect for the country as they did then . We owe so much to these people for the freedom that we have now.

And our (soon-to-be ex-) Prime Minister didn’t have the decency to stick around for the full commemoration ceremonies - instead leaving early so he could give a self-aggrandising interview to a UK news channel to try and score political points in the upcoming general election.
    His excuse?
That this interview had been ‘planned in advance…’
It wasn’t, however, planned 80 years in advance - so it’s not like these ceremonies crept up on him, so that he couldn’t reschedule his interview.
Totally out-of-touch and an absolute disgrace to the memories of these fallen men, and what they died fighting for - something that’s been echoed by some of the few surviving heroes of this century-defining moment in history.
And his “I’m sorry but…” laughable excuse of an apology just adds insult to injury.
    July 4th can’t come quick enough…

He cheated on his wife and his brother is a cheater also just like his father.
They say even Lisbeth cheated with the butler.
Now Lizzy is dead and he became king , but is now on sick leave.
This guy has to thank the Lord that he never had to work or had any money problems.
What do the people of the UK see in this royal family with so many scandals en living on taxpayers money while the have enough money allready.

@hummel3479 On the contrary, King Charles served with both the RAF and Navy and when he left the service used his pay to set up a charity called the Princes Trust which has provided training and support for 1 million young people trying to set up in business or gain additional skills to prepare for the workforce.
He has also carried out around 500 public engagements a year and supported multiple charities. He has founded and developed the Duchy Originals business, built a village called Poundbury, and championed farming and environmental causes.
There are criticisms one might make of King Charles, but 'not working a day in his life' certainly isn't one of them.
