Thanks for sharing Tomo-san. I admire your positivity and the happy approach you bring to your guitar playing and teaching. This is a great way to teach, play music and live life in general. They say that happiness breeds happiness, and so we need more people like you in the world to continue inspiring others and making the world a happier place. Thanks very much for sharing your wisdom.

I'm afraid I think sums me up for the last few months. Happy in my music though. I'm learning far more and faster than I did as a child. In two bands keeps me distracted from being afraid, afraid of losing my best friend my cat. Sold most of my guitars to pay for her vet bills but it's not enough. Every moment is a blessing and precious together. I play music for her

I have been playing for decades and finally realized I was in a rut with my playing. I made a commitment to fall in love with the guitar all over again through learning more theory and other methods. I then stumbled upon your TH-cam channel. Your passion and enthusiasm for this instrument, as well as your approach to teaching have made me very happy I decided to take this new path. Thank you so much for being who you are and for inspiring so many of us. Sending you love from Tampa, Florida. ❤

I have crested the two years of playing mark.
Am I happy? Yes and here is why.
Ultimately, I feel blessed I have the fingers and ears to play and enjoy sound/music. I grew up in the Chicagoland area and was lucky enough to be exposed to great music from a young age (Blues Bros, anyone?)
I remind myself of my successes and completed goals while striving for excellence. I can do more, plus some, than my initial goals. It is easy to rush to 'what next?' after significant accomplishments. That brings me to , , enjoy the journey. Spending an evening diving into your guitar and how it works is something most anyone would think is cool, musician or not. Make a coffee or tea, have a slice of pizza, wash your hands and try some stuff. That includes all the missed notes and goofy restarts.
Its all meant to be fun. Also, stick around positive people.
Thank you, Mr. Tomo. You are a positive person. 🎸

I went through a long period of stagnation, probably like a good 5 years. There was even a period where I put down the guitar for awhile. I wasn't happy at all with playing. I wasn't happy with the way I wrote things. Then I found your channel (some others as well, but yours is one of a select few I pay the most attention to in terms of learning and thinking about guitar).
I'm a lot happier now because I feel like I'm learning again and chords and progressions that get me excited to play again. It feels a lot like when I first started playing and everything was new and exciting. I might even know the chord, but maybe it's a song I didn't know used that specific voicing in that specific progression. But it's the first time in a long time I've been excited and happy when I pick up my guitar.
Really, it's thanks to you Fujita-sensei. Thank you for this channel and for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with all of us.

Great video Tomo and I am happy with my guitar playing! My wife bought me my first guitar for my 40th birthday and I would strum it once in a while, then we had a baby and the guitar stayed in the closet for 8 years before I even took it out of the case after moving! LOL Fast forward to Corona virus quarantine and I discovered you and other youtubers and I decided to get serious about making decent sounds come out of the guitar!! When you said don't worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast and be kind to yourself, that took me off the cliff of quitting because of the sore fingers and sore wrist and frustration from not sounding remotely like music! LOL After your chromatic exercises put me on the path and now I have 14 guitars and still learning and loving every moment of this guitar journey! I don't want to be a professional, I just want to play for my family! Thank you again Tomo!!!

Yes, I am happy now. I am happy to hold a guitar for even 10-15mins a day now. When I was a teenager, I played guitar without internet, without serious training and practice. I used to feel sad that I can't play this instrument well but I have a strong feeling and passion to guitar. From time to time, family issue, working issuse come to me and I have to leave music and guitar. I always feel very sorry to guitar that I love it like a nerd but can't familiar with it and no time to play it. And recent years, life is more stable and I find a professional guitar teacher and learn from basic again. So yes, I am happy now. I treasure the time to practice and hold my instruments. Hey Tomo, I really like your shirt. This is actually a message that you can also apply to the real life situations, not only to the guitar. I really need to learn that as well. You know, music is a gift and we should enjoy it by having an individual guitar journey. We should not compare and be mad about our slow progress or anything like that it just demotivates. Just enjoy the journey and see wehre it leads. Peace!

Tomo - you are a great teacher, Player, collector, gear owner, experimentalist-U-Tuber, Husband, Father ? , person. many of us are not happy with the way the music industry has gone, or the excessive emphasis on technology instead of teamwork - it has brought about. Public performances have become very problematic, as has public gathering in general.

Yes, definitely! but still you can create your own kind of work. I use my limitation to create something new. That's why I even own so many effect pedals, but I don't use many of them. Less effects made my fingers TONE! Public performances... more choices: Private Backyard (small to gig!) or online performance. (Andy Timmons is doing that so well with well attendances)

I'm "content" with my level (44 years exp). Been in Prog Band - never stop learning. The one thing that I always try to convey is emotion. Some of the simplest note sequences can draw so much depth. To me it's not the only sequence but how you squeeze every bit of pain / hurt / joy from each note. I think of the Johnny Cash cover "Hurt" - we saw his heart in the raw. I think that approach to your instrument is the mountain. Am I happy, I'm happy I'm still on the road to finding this "freedom".

I was never after being "the best guitar player". Actually, my biggest role model is probably:
Miya, the bandleader of the japanese band Mucc.
Not a virtuoso, just a competent guitar player, songwriter, arranger and producer (Ryuusei is my favourite song by them). All I want is to create music that I really love and then also touches other people. And whenever I doubted my technical ability, after a while I remembered him and 're-realized' that I don't have to be a guitar god to fulfil my musical goals. I might be just as self-critical with my songwriting and production skills as others are with their technical ability, though, but I feel like I'm in a healthy enough place regarding this whole topic

Your thinking philosophy is most definitely still teaching. Another teacher from the UK, inspired me to find my own way to play, and you've reinforced that a little more. I only picked up a guitar(seriously) after I retired 6 years ago, and pick it up every day. I've developed my own sound, and now want to work more on my tone as you've taught us here. I've been practicing John Mayer's Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, the live version in LA, and I've been improving slowly but surely (Some parts are really challenging because I usually don't use my fingers to play strings, because I play a lot of hard rock and metal). Seeing and hearing the progress is very nice, even if it is slow, it eventually comes!

Hi Tomo! And thank you for this. We can all identify with it! I didn't start playing until I was 18, and even though I never put it down and progressed fairly quickly, I was happy to be self taught, because i was in art school for painting and i figured, thats enough formal education!" And so had long periods of stagnation and was way too content relying on my same old tricks. I knew that I played things based in much more theory than I was intellectually aware of, but sort of neglected it because I thought it would somehow take the joy out of the guitar. Now, 24 years later I am finally learning the theory behind what I play, and also how to apply these lessons in a way that (hopefully) makes my playing more sophisticated and tasteful. And sure, once you know more you realize that there is so much further to go...but I'm on my way! And while I doubt I will ever be able to "shred" because I started so late, and maybe lack some fast twitch muscle on the genetic side, I have a vast new appreciation for guitar, and music, and find myself achieving breakthroughs on a regular basis, because of a combination of my own desire to learn and amazing learning resources and teachers like you. What a wonder time to be alive as a guitarist. I almost feel like a college student again, but this time studying music, from some of the greatest mentors in the world, like yourself. Can't thank you enough.

Tomo-San, I remember my first time getting to play with gain.
I was at a music store, Sam Ash, as we were looking around, my family and I, for an electric guitar to play because I had been playing an acoustic for a few months, to a year. Well, the guy at the store puts an epiphone Les Paul in my hands and I plug into an amp and I start playing, but I'm on the clean channel. He's still standing there, and I go into Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" and I'll never forget with this guy reaches over to the amp, and puts me in the gain channel. It blew me away, and I dug into the strings, and played the fuck out of it.
That was the moment I truly became a guitar player, in my mind. I will never forget it. And now I'm in the process, 11 years later, of truly refining my guitar playing and recording so that I can become a session guitarist in the future.
Man, Guitar is one of those things that once you have your "Holy shit" moment, you're hooked for life. Rock on Tomo-San 🤘

Amazing story Tomo-san! Perfect timing for me to hear this from you as I am also discovering my tone and how it makes others around me happy to hear it. I used to play and think I sounded great when I’m by myself, and then I would go on stage in the early years and all I could do was hear all my mistakes and think to myself how I sucked. But people would come up to me afterwards and say how phenomenal my playing was, and I couldn’t believe it! Because I noticed ALL my mistakes. But I’ve come to the point where I don’t care what other people think, and I don’t care if I screw up at all as long as I can have fun. Thank you for sharing the story about you and your journey with the guitar. I really appreciated hearing it from you. I like your example about playing with disciplined limitations - no pedals. Just guitar and amplifier. I remember seeing Jim Campilongo play at a tiny little club here in NYC. I just kept staring at his guitar cable. It went straight from his Tele to his Princeton Reverb yet every song had such unique and distinctly different tone and sound. Just his hands and the volume and tone control on his guitar. Beautiful.
