Just saw Mike Love and the Beach Boys last week in Calgary, Alberta. He did not disappoint. Two hours of fantastic music. The biggest surprise of the show musically, was Mike's Pisces Brothers, which he does reference in this interview. Amazing song. The other major surprise was the age diversity of the audience. The crowd went all the way from teenage couples on a date, to very old men and women using walkers. It was just mind-blowing. We also saw a lot of dads with their sons or daughters, clearly there to share and pass down the love of this music. It was my first Beach Boys concert, and it was spectacular. I will never forget it. And to finish off here, my fanboy moment, even though I'm 64 years old, was when my wife and I were just coming out of the elevator at the hotel/casino/music venue where we were staying to see the Beach Boys concert. And as we were coming out of the elevator, Mike Love was just going in to the elevator. The elevator doors closed, and my eyes were popping out of my head as I looked at my wife. Her eyes were almost as wide. "That was Mike Love!" I whispered to her. I'll never forget it. To come within a couple feet of someone who has been part of music history for over 60 years is a moment I'll never forget, and I'm sure over the years I will embellish it to the point where 20 years from now I'll be saying that Mike and I had dinner and drinks and talked Beach Boys music til 2 am. Thank God for the Beach Boys.
I wonder how he truly feels when people say “Pet Sounds” is there favorite Beach Boys album?? Imagine an album that YOU FOUGHT and ARGUED against, becomes the “staple” and most recognized album of your bands career…
I'm not the biggest Mike fan, but its not like he said he hated the music. He was just concerned that it was too far removed from what they had been known for, which is not an unreasonable concern to have. And sales wise, he ended up being right. The album did not do as well as their recent releases at the time.
It's not just my favorite Beach Boys record, but one of the greatest ever recorded. Besides, Mike made that horrible "Kokomo" song that makes me homicidal.

Thank you for having Mike at Google! His book is a wonderful preservation of The Beach Boys' career and Mike's life. I was able to meet Mike during his book tour this year. He is a truly special man.
Maybe if the guy just buried his ego he would have got some of the credit he thought he was due. Unquestionably the fifth least important part of the group. Brian built this guy up by giving him some leads and Input in the early days, a decision I am sure he regretted later on. BTW there’s nothing wrong about being the 5th best singer and musician in one of the most vocally talented groups ever, he just couldn’t accept that and is still trying to convince people he was Brian’s equal.
I find that comment needlessly rude, considering the man's obvious musical accomplishments.. you might look inward to find why you have such public needs .
How is Mike Love wanting credit and royalties for songs he co-wrote any different than Levon Helm wanting the same from Robbie Robertson? Helm was given a lot of respect for speaking up(as he should have), Mike is vilified. How is Mike any different than Mick Taylor who has fought for writing credits for songs he wrote when he was in the Stones that Jagger and Richards took full credit for. Mike has apologized repeatedly fucking up at the Beach Boys induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. How much contrition does the guy need to show before people let it go? John Lennon(I love his music) is one of the biggest jerks in rock music history(ask Julian)... he is worshiped as saint. Sure Mike has said and done some things that I have not liked and I am a Wilson Brothers fan first and foremost but without think of how many songs we would never have heard. He wrote the lyrics to Pacific Ocean Blue, the song from the album of the same name of the Dennis Wilson masterpiece for fuck sake. I don't like how he tours using the name The Beach Boys...that band he has is Love/Johnston and friends and should be called that. I don't like how he seemed to steer a vibrant and progressive, creative early 70's Beach Boys into a touring oldies band but he isn't the demon he has been made out to be. I don't like his inability to acknowledge Dennis as a great musician and song writer. A dick at times(who isn't),sure....evil, no.
See, John admitted to being a fucking piss ant and tried to better himself. Mike Love continues to say “for those who believe Brian Wilson walks on water I will continue to be the anti-Christ.” He’s just got an ego. Nobody really cares about him wanting credit for writing their early songs, the issue is he seems to also want credit for things he tried actively to destroy. I think a lot of Beach Boys die hards are upset that Mike Love didn’t let Brian go solo in ‘66. Brian wanted to make music he felt, Mike wanted to keep making hit surf records, but rather than part ways and keep both happy, Mike kinda guilted Brian into continuing the Beach Boys thing because he knew they’d be nothing without Brian. You add the that the fact that he clearly doesn’t want to give up the spotlight and constantly name-drops, he just isn’t really a likeable guy. But that being said I don’t think anybody takes issue with him trying to get credit for I Get Around, Fun, Fun, Fun and so on, he had a hand in them and deserves credit. (Beyond that he should take his royalties and stfu though)
Mike has definitely done a few thing to hurt his public persona, and I have have been critical of him after watching some interviews/stories, but you make some good points. He probably doesn’t deserve all the flack he gets. You are right, there are a lot of pricks in the industry, but it’s not evident publicly. Many highly talented artists/musicians/actors/athletes/businesspeople are very narcissistic, it’s not unusual.
@@paulya1269 The difference between that highly talented artist and Mike is that Mike isn't even talented at all, in almost 60 years surrounded by musicians he didn't learn to play anything besides that 2 sax notes on shut down. As a lyricist he is pretty repetitive.
@@davidmaynard1530 he did co write several of their songs, and his vocal was a big contributor to the Beach Boys sound. Okay, he's been a bit of a jerk at times, but remember, so have others been too. I think we should just remember how things were and accept them in the here and now. I love The Beach Boys, and they all have been brilliant in their own special way. Brian and Carl just a bit more than the others, and finally Dennis evolved into something special too.
@@lesleyadams4279 Didn’t old Manson Bud, Dennis drown in a drunken stupor after getting the boot from the band ? Mike was in Love with himself. Ask him why he hit his Wife’s, he has been married seven times. The reasons his wife’s left him is he abused them, he loved hitting women.
Mike Love has the dubious honor of being the only Beach Boy who manipulated Brian Wilson over songwriting credits. He knows full well it's what he did. He was the least talented Beach Boy musically and he knows this as well. But rather than accept having been so fortunate to have been in the same orbit as Brian, he chose to manipulate. He wanted more money, but couldn't write a hit song on his own to save his life. Shame on him.

@@munimathbypeterfelton6251, PLEASE look up sarcasm, or irony. That post was in jest. NO ONE would write a song about love, referencing Hateful Mikey! Mikey, the no love "love." He's an egomaniac. He knows that he could never create material that comes even remotely close to Pet Sounds or Smile. That's why he's jealous of Brian Wilson. Mike can write about cars, girls, the beach, sunshine, summertime, and adolescence. Brian can write about cars, girls, the beach, sunshine, summertime, adolescence, as well as deep, introspective, and musically sophisticated material.
I've had my problems with Mike Love but I've never been bothered by him not actively playing an instrument on stage. This is because he's a front man and a pretty good one at that. We all love Brian Wilson but he's a shy fellow and a lot clumsier communicating with the audience. He needs Mike to get his message across. And look at what she just said, "150 SHOWS/YEAR"!!! That's a killer schedule even for a forty year old man. Okay he's not exactly a voice like Sinatra's however he actually bears a similarity with old Blue Eyes in as much as they both had voices that "talk". "If everybody hadan ocean". Just try to annunciate such a sentence like Mike does. It's not a great voice but it's a highly distinctive one and communicates. That and his long history of making records is buried deep into our minds and thoughts. As such he's absolutely irreplaceable.
The "Taking a dump on the dinner plate" story was different the way I heard it. No idea what the truth is but in one of the band bios (Heroes and Villains, I think) they reported that Murray demanded that Brian squat and defecate on his own plate in front of the family then sent him out to eat with the dogs.

Are the Beach Boys the America's Beatles? Of are the Beatles the British Beach Boys? Either way they are both great.
This is fabulous. He is sharing so much key information. I wish Brian would do this; a nice and thorough sit-down conversation.

Her face at 55:49 :D hahaha! I would have made the same face. She handled that situation very respectfully.
Ya, I think I did make that face while I was watching.
What do you call someone that hangs around a bunch of real musicians?
Mike Love
I find that comment needlessly rude, considering the man's obvious musical accomplishments.. you might look inward to find why you have such public needs .
@@richardelliott8352....thanks Mike 😂
I love his explanation of the lawsuit situation. Totally clarified that matter. Love the Beach Boys!
Mike Love: My Life riding the coattails of my much more talented cousin Brian.
The B Boys are def one of the best r n r groups ever. Btian Wilson is a genius.
Mike Love continues to say “for those who believe Brian Wilson walks on water I will continue to be the anti-Christ.”
He’s just got an ego.
Mike's name was on Surfin with Brian's. Nobody complained then. He DID co-write many of the songs and deserves credit.

Entertaining. Thanks.
A very enjoyable interview. Mike deserves more credit for his part in the band 🤗
What part ? Singing every third or fourth song and dancing like he has special needs ? Or lying about the tunes and lyrics that he wrote ?
@@davidmaynard1530 he did co write several of their songs, and his vocal was a big contributor to the Beach Boys sound. Okay, he's been a bit of a jerk at times, but remember, so have others been too. I think we should just remember how things were and accept them in the here and now. I love The Beach Boys, and they all have been brilliant in their own special way. Brian and Carl just a bit more than the others, and finally Dennis evolved into something special too.
@@lesleyadams4279 Didn’t old Manson Bud, Dennis drown in a drunken stupor after getting the boot from the band ? Mike Love has the dubious honor of being the only Beach Boy who manipulated Brian Wilson over songwriting credits. He knows full well it's what he did. He was the least talented Beach Boy musically and he knows this as well. But rather than accept having been so fortunate to have been in the same orbit as Brian, he chose to manipulate. He wanted more money, but couldn't write a hit song on his own to save his life. Shame on him.
The more I hear Mike Love the more I like him and the less I believe the vicious critics who hate him.
To be honest, Mike Love is a talented lyricist. Give the man his due.
Well, if you like lists of geographical locations, that is ("Kokomo," "Surfin USA," "California Girls," "Back in the USSR" (uncredited).

@@lucasoheyze4597 well you're an idiot.
Mike DIVORCED
why can't he play even one musical instrument? If he did I would've had at least some respect as a musical artist.

The "Taking a dump on the dinner plate" story was different the way I heard it. No idea what the truth is but in one of the band bios (Heroes and Villains, I think) they reported that Murray demanded that Brian squat and defecate on his own plate in front of the family then sent him out to eat with the dogs.
