The lyrics may well be inspired by some kind of real "lonely hearts" adverts in England, but the main thing to me is they are briliant in the way that English bands can be with the languge really being poetic, and really fitting the music. It's not always that easy to do--I'm American and I hear a small masterpiece of a beautiful, richly layered pop song with five star lyrics. The song is too beautiful for more than one reason. Very rare.

The chorus appears to be a kind of Mills and Boon satirical view on romance and the line “Hello partner kiss your name bye-bye” could be a feminist objection, by Harriet, to the fact that the woman was expected to drop her surname and take their husbands when they married.
