Today is the 100th anniversary of the 3 bloodiest battles of ww1 The battle of verdun, the Somme and the brosilov offensive As well as the 102nd anniversary of the start of ww1.
The significance of America's contribution during WW1 is something of a debated topic, especially if you look at Germany's homefront in 1918. While the Best-Litovsk Treaty secured the Central Powers' Eastern Front, this only managed to secure troops for the German offensive on the Western Front. However, with the failure of that offensive, the War had all but been decided, with the German homefront incapable of meeting the demands of the War. One of the things often overlooked is that American commanders had learned nothing from observation of the War itself. The Americans often launched offensives with outdated tactics that had been long abandoned by the other European combatants. Many of the American offensives were completely ineffective at achieving any sort of goal. The main contribution of America was morale and fresh troops. Their fighting prowess was not really a factor during the war. Instead it should be noted that America contributed as a neutral nation for much of the War in terms of food and military material. To consider the American contribution insignificant, is utter folly, but to also consider it the greatest thing ever, is also folly.
This is completely spot on! Had America not come, French and British forces would likely be overwhelmed by the German forces on the western front. Also, might I add it was the U.S that created the League of Nations before returning to isolationism (caring about themselves and nothing else in the world).
Yeah, I hate how they always act like they came in, during both wars and saved everyone's asses. They weren't even in this war until the last year of it and didn't fight until the last 100 days, and the only reason they joined was because a German U-Boat accidentally mistook one of their ships for a British ship. Before that they sold bullets to both sides... made with Canadian mined nickel. Our guys, who did real work the whole war, were shot with bullets, coated in nickel that we mining. Damn Americans.
Max Tripp Well the situation is a little more complicated than that. If you're looking for a really indepth view of WW1 I suggest looking up The Great War here on youtube. It's a channel and series that details the War week by week.
Hey Apollo! The timing of this couldn't be more perfect, today (July 28) is the 102th Anniversary of WWI. Exactly a century ago, the War Over by Christmas entered its second year of carnage.
Let’s pretend that this battle took place in the chateau battle right before the Argonne Offensive. I also appreciate the fact that he actually brought the Harlem Hellfighters in this for historical accuracy.
hey pixie are you sure trench gunners are melee units? They seem to perform terribly in all your videos. Kinda makes sense when they dont even have bayonets on their guns. Maybe they're actually just a very close ranged 'shooting 'unit designed to grenade and wipe fortifications
On the battlefield, Monash was knighted by King George V. It was the first time in 200 years that a British monarch had honoured a commander in such a way. More praise came from British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery who said of Monash: "I would name Sir John Monash as the best general on the western front in Europe".
I have a question. A serious one. When I load up Medieval II on my windows 10 computer (the game was downloaded from Steam btw with the kingdoms dlc), and the game works, but I cannot see my cursor. Please Help! I went to the forums but I do not believe anyone there will help me. I turn now to you, Pix. My last hope. Great Battle btw! #+1like
In the Battle of Hamel, Monash demonstrated that the protection of human life was not only justified on humanist grounds, it also was a legitimate war strategy. Hamel was a strongly fortified German defence position, which protected the area between the Villers Bretonneux Heights and the Somme River. Monash horrified both the American and British high command by proposing a strategy that involved throwing heavy war machinery into enemy territory where it could potentially be lost. Monash proposed that armoured tanks would support infantry in the advance, and in turn, both troops and tanks would be supported by advancing artillery from behind. As the troops took ground, aerial drops ensured they would be resupplied with medical equipment and ammunition. From the perspective of the traditional war orthodoxy, it was sheer madness. If the attack failed, the aircraft would simply be supplying German positions and a German counter attack would take possession of allied machinery. General Pershing, the American Commander in Chief, argued against American participation in the offensive, but Monash simply ignored his objections.
21:30 Life of a Soldier? The unit in the building has a single man holding the entrance against an entire German unit by himself in melee. There is like 6 other American guys at the entrance but they are all trying to run inside.
The year is 1918 after witnessing the failed invasion of Gallipoli the American army decides to invade the Ottoman Empire itself the ottomans decide to call the German army as a last line of defence the American army slowly progresses to the outskirts of Istanbul where the last hard-point lies if the Americans take the hard-point they take Istanbul
The year is 1917 after witnessing the failure of the Gallipoli attack the Americans rally to attack a hard-point on the outskirts of Istanbul the final line of defence for the ottoman's. As a last resort the ottoman's call for the German army they take the hard-point they take Istanbul
honestly Apollo as a viewer who typically gets very bored and annoyed with alot of TH-camr s content. I just wanted to say you are one of my fav subscriptions and I'm always glad to see your content! you are great!
well generally speaking the first time tanks were actually used during WW1 was a total failure as infantry divisions failed to provide enough support to actually take the land cleared out by the tanks. in reality the only reason tanks were made were to provide decent enough armor to launch an assault on enemy trenches. afterwards the infantry would move up in order to clean up any survivors left over by tanks. also, early tanks used tractor engines.
+Vaughn Sy no it's not main difference is that blitzkrieg used air support to clear them out then tanks would move in alongside infantry with more infantry behind the main force
Actually there's one bullcrap thing here, the hellfighters, or the real name, the harlem hellfighters was an only black soldier unit, but the thing is that they fought in the FRENCH arme, because of the segregation and the racism at the Time in the US, they were not autorized to fight in the US army. Exept this little point, great video as always.

You need to stop saying stupid things. The US didn't even join this war until the last year of it, and didn't fight in it, until the last 100 days. Before that, they were selling bullets to both sides, that they made with Canadian nickel. Fuck pre-1941 USA.

Michael Ouellette The entente combined had 10 million losses, the US isnt much of that number and even though you could argue alot died, we didnt really turn the tide of the war... The Germans were ehausted and beat, without our help the French had planned an offensive to finish them off
Nice video Apollo. I don't think the path-finding bugs are from the mod alone. In Empire, if you blast some holes in the walls the A.I. will go spastic. Sometimes it'll form units into long columns or run soldiers around in circles. It would be kind of funny except the frame-rate drops so low that the camera moves faster than the cannon balls.
I studied WW1 quite alot and from the sources we were given in school indicated Americas contribution in the war effort was mainly economic their military contribution was token at best.
Connor understands all them points, he was simply saying that it would have been more appealing to have trenches, to which i agree. If it was me making this kind of mod, i would enable some infantry units to construct trenches on the battle field; kinda like how in Rome TW you can mine your way into the enemy walls. That same mining combined with enabling trench construction would make the game VERY appealing.
"The Trench Gunners for America stink! Though it could be because I was charging in and they were shooting me to death as I was charging in." I think that might have something to do with it, but I'm not sure.
On the 4th July 1918, Australian and American troops under Monash's command took less than 92 minutes to kill 2,000 Germans, and capture 1,600 others. Australian casualties were fewer than 1,300 and the Americans were fewer than 176. Not only had a stalemate been broken, the allied forces had been given a massive moral boost. Americans had been initiated into the war with a victory and it had been shown that the days of trench warfare were coming to an end.
Hear the toll of the bell, over six months in hell Out of the trenches they came As the war rages on, at the edge of the Argonne Hellfighters earning their name!
Interesting fact in the battle of the Somme the Brits were so confident that they would win that they were told not to run but to walk and got cut to ribbons by the MGs. In many of the other successful offensives the men had rushed forward and got into the trenches before the MGs killed them all. So the image of men walking over no mans land isn't what always happened. I know that sounds a bit nerdy but I am a bit nerdy. so yeah.
Because the siege system in Empire and Napoleon sucked. Just square forts or star forts. No variation. No cities or major settlements, the few structures that could be garrisoned could be easily levelled at a distance by artillery. Take the walls and you've pretty much won. Empire and especially Napoleon were great in open battlefield battles, but they lost something when they gave up the epic city and castle sieges of past titles like Medieval 2. Do you climb the walls? Knock them down? Ram the gate and pour through? Will the enemy fall back and make you fight street by street? Do they have multiple walls? Medieval 2 allowed for some amazing sieges.
America was not insignificant in the war, it helped to break the deadlock, but I can see what you mean as in they did not have as much action as others.
the he'll fighters were also known to the Germans because despite protocol for American forces when dealing with a flame thrower they would still keep charging
great video. I do have one question that is not about this video. Is there a plan in the future for another tug of war with your arch rival jacky fish?
The kaiser decided to give up the western front. pushing towards india, he thought maybe if he could get to india. England would need to send troops down to it. Protecting tea and all. They steamrolled down, until they realized. The american were waiting. (continue on with the background story)
One tale of a Harlem Hell-fighter was if African American man (If you know his name please tell me it.) who served in ww1. During his service he and two other men were ambushed during the night by a platoon of German soldiers. This man shot until his rifle was out of bullets then he took to his bayonet, when his bayonet snapped he beat the rest of the men to death with the butt of his rifle. During this fight he's was shot seventeen times but only succumbed to his wounds when the platoon surrendered.
Hey man i picked up Napoleon after watching your vids for about a week and i was wondering could you help a noob.I know sound pretty bad and your vids. Thanks for the Fun you give me everyday:D
The Harlem Hellfighters are even wearing the correct french helmets. That really is some amazing attention to detail!

Still it would make it a little more WWI like, and besides, that's what artillery is for.

Are the trench gunners really that good in melee? I personally would think that the shotgun would be more effective.
Pixalated Apollo " don't attack in waves" - so here you se my second wave and third wave :D
+Winnderow not in medieval 2 and vanilla Napoleon
Well ty for informing im not so good att total war series, i think it's more fun to watch you play and watch " all the reckless hate" ^^
This is the only war where the best part of the battle is the armys making the trudge through no mans land.
America was not insignificant in the war, it helped to break the deadlock, but I can see what you mean as in they did not have as much action as others.
the he'll fighters were also known to the Germans because despite protocol for American forces when dealing with a flame thrower they would still keep charging
YOU DA BEST APOLLO!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to see the Harlem hell fighters here in this game

When you have total war napoleon but battlefield 1 isn't released yet
The Germans had the firepower but the Americans had the Will power, very nice.
