And thank you for giving inches for us USA people. Makes it so much easier for us to make your patterns. You are one of my favorites on you tube. I just sew for myself family and friends.
Thank you always wanted to know how to draw a circle and make the sides fit. You have the best way I've found to do Pi. Now in going to try and make myself a hat to keep this Florida sun off my face as I've had skin cancer on my face several times.
I do that too, but also keep an awesome knife and scissors sharpener around since my grown kids can't tell the difference between my scissors when they come to use them.
Before you start cutting your fabric, understand that his tutorial makes a narrow brim, which doesn't make a standard bucket hat, but does make a lovely feminine hat base that you can put ribbons and flowers on, pin up one side, etc Vintage hat appreciaters will love it. This is a great tutorial on measuring and the concept of slashing and moving the bottom squares to make extended curves. And it's also a wonderful math tutorial that I needed to brush up on. To make a wider brim, fold the paper 3 times, instead of 2. The 5/8" measurement between each square will still work, in between the squares. And yes the beautiful dish towel is handwoven.
I am from Sri Lanka. Dear lady your teaching was excellent. I went through so many videos , but always somewhere something is not properly explained, but yours was crystal clear. Thank you again.

Oh my land ... I can finally make my hubby a bucket hat. His big head dosent fit into any of the patterns Ive found so far and I didnt know how to adjust the patterns. Now I can secretly try to make another that hopefully fits. Champion!!
Excited to get started on my bucket hat. I do the mowing here and this will be perfect. I have a slightly smaller head which makes it harder to find a hat that fits. Now, I get to customize a hat just for me. Thank you Christine! ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for showing your working of measurements Christine. Luckily for me, I found a few sites on YT last year with pdf template links, so I'm covered for kids and adult sizes haha. I'm hoping this year to have a go at making some to sell, in different sizes. My to-do list gets bigger every month 🤪
Thanks for another great tutorial! but I had a few pros and cons. First, I ran out of room on my desk. I was never any good at this sort of math's of school (55yrs ago). Pye what pie i hope its apple. On the positive side: - thank goodness for the pause button and luckily my head is the same size as yours, but because of your clear instructions I have a pattern drawn and I'm ready to make my bucket hat, although I'm going to have to have a lie down. lol
Thanks for sharing the bucket hat videos. I’ve watched them and added them to my playlists so I can use them when I make one. I’ve checked your channel and didn’t see it, but would you consider making a video on how to create that gorgeous dress (or maybe it’s an apron?) in the dress form behind/next to you? I love it!!
Wow very different project. May look at doing it for the summer months here. Must get my EPP quilt finished first. It’s the 108x108 inch quilt. Need to get it finished by 2nd March when I have both hands sorted for carpel tunnel. You will be in my thoughts. Hehe. I have a tendon in one hand to be removed as well. So hope mine doesn’t take as long as yours to heal.
Good luck with your surgery Karen. I used to do EPP as well. It's so therapeutic. I was once working on a hexagonal quilt. The papers were 1/4" in size. I don't know what was in my head at the time 🤣🤣
There is a more simple way to calculate the radius for us people who got lost there. Take the circumference of 22 inches divide it by 3.14 which gives the answer 7.00 diameter (and a few more characters which we can ignore) then divide it by two to get the radius.
A pleasure, I am a massive fan of yours, love your tutorials and am about to embark on a huge overhaul of my sewing room and fabrics. I have gained many ideas from you , so many thanks to you. 😊
Hi Christine. I am catching up on some of your older videos and came across this bucket hat drafting. I have made many hats this way, reversible... and drafting much the way you have. My constant issue is getting the fit right. My hats always end up a bit tight. What sort of ease do you add to your head measurement?
I'm looking forward to the next instalment, Christine, as I have some groovy, cotton duck scraps that would look great as bucket hats. One question, is there supposed to be an inch difference between the circumference of the crown and the length of the band?
I haven't measured anything yet. I meant the difference in your measurements. There seems to be an inch difference (crown 22" circumference and band 11.5" folded). Is this just a rounding error and the crown circumference is actually 23", or does the band need to be eased into the smaller circumference of the crown?
@Jirup, I've had a look at the video, and it could be that I have rounded the curved measurment up. Possibly even the positioning of my tape measure was out. Because of the curve, everything did still fit well together, but to be sure, measure each pattern piece against its neighbour before cutting the fabric.😀
Well done Christine, using two methods and partially performing the calculation. From a retired maths teacher. Cheers from Ballarat. (Were you once a teacher?)
Oh, Wow Gayle. Thank you so much. No, I was never a teacher, though I did actually want to be a maths teacher, and a scientist, an actuary, and even a motor mechanic 😁
Christine. Is this the same method used to draft a sailor hat? 🤔 😳 😅 Please reply. And thanks for always sharing your knowledge with us. I enjoy and love your videos. I only wish that this platform could've been equipped to show tutors what stuff their viewers are making. May Almighty God continue to bless the work of your hands. This I pray, in the Mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen and Amen. ✋ 🙏 Thank you so very much. 💖 ❤ 😊
Hi Judy. No, the sailor hat is a very different technique to the bucket hat. The sailor hat has many pieces on the crown to get the point, and also a brim. If you're on Facebook, you can share your work on the Christine's Home Affairs Facebook page 😀
I have a question about the math: when you measured the quarter of the circle to get the measurement for the side of the hat, you measured 5.75, but if you take your original head circumference measurement of 22 and divide by 4, the measurement is then 5.5. Does that quarter inch difference give you wriggle room, or does it not matter? I’m a novice sewist, so I apologize of the question is silly.
making the crown you mentioned adding to the seam allowance before folding and cutting and spreading the parts out, then mentioned seam allowance again. I am very very confused now
My head measurements are a kids size lol makes sense because when I was being fitted for glasses, I was told I had to get glasses from the kids section.
Oh no, that's so easy to forget. Perhaps you could cut it in half and add a stripe as a feature down the centre of the hat. Turn it into a design feature😀
I wish this had come out last summer, I searched and drafted to no avail. Finally gave up, and I hope I’m not inspired once again to make a bucket hat.
And thank you for giving inches for us USA people. Makes it so much easier for us to make your patterns. You are one of my favorites on you tube. I just sew for myself family and friends.

Thank you Pearline. I am in a tiny town in Victoria, Australia😁
I love the "these are my paper scissors" disclaimer. 😄
I do that too, but also keep an awesome knife and scissors sharpener around since my grown kids can't tell the difference between my scissors when they come to use them.
Haha, I wondered if anyone would notice 😁
My family are very aware of the "scissor rules" in our house. They can use anything outside my sewing room 😁
Thank you. Great video as always
Thank you 😀
That is a great pattern, looking forward to the next video, thanks
Thanks Eve 😀
Great informational video, thanks.
Thanks Joyce 😀

That's awesome Melyna 😀
Really great info. Got to get my pattern ready for the next video. Thanks
Awesome! Thank you Cynthia 😀
Excellent! I really learn a lot from you. Thank you.
Glad to help Annie ☺️
You made this really clear for me thank you.
I'm so glad Frances. Thank you😀
yes, as a weaver, i see that its handwoven...beautiuful
It sure is Karin. Apparently it was woven on a floor loom 😁
Thank you, clear and easy explaination
You're very welcome. Thank you Azizah😀
Thank you!
My pleasure. Thank you😁
Thanks so very much for posting this. I am looking forward to making myself one.
Have fun Donna 😀
Thank you so much! Algebra and Geometry classes were a long, long time ago.
A very long time ago for me too😁
Thank you for the great instructions; clear and concise. 😁
You’re welcome Pam😊
Such a good tutorial. I feel confident that I could do this
You can do it Penny 😀
Very clear instructions! Will have to try it. Been wanting to construct a bucket hat for a while. Perfect timing😉
Glad it was helpful!😀
I love the slashing rectangles method to get your measured curves! ❤
Me too!! 😃

You can do it Nanni Bee 😀
Love this, thank you so much!! Please direct me to Beth's weaving tutorials she made a beautiful towel! 💖
I'm not aware of who Beth is. Care to share?😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I assume its the lady that sent you the towel you spoke about at the beginning of this tutorial from Virginia
Ahh, I'm not sure that she has tutorials. I've sent her a message, and will let you know if I hear back from her😀
This is great, I have added it to my list of things to do.
That's fabulous BB 😀
Thanks, I needed this today. Was going to try and make one this afternoon, you came in just in time.❤️
Haha, that's great Debbie 😀

Thanks BG. It'll be great for your Summer 😀
Super. Merci

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I agree with you but maths in not my subject so thought others in the same boat as me ...

@Suzi Gleeson that will be fun. I'm still working on my new space. Hoping to show it all off very soon 😀
Formidable, mercibeaucoup.

My constant issue is getting the fit right. My hats always end up a bit tight. What sort of ease do you add to your head measurement?
Jennifer, I didn't add any ease to the measurement, but did add allow for a looser fit when measuring😀
I'm looking forward to the next instalment, Christine, as I have some groovy, cotton duck scraps that would look great as bucket hats. One question, is there supposed to be an inch difference between the circumference of the crown and the length of the band?
Did you measure with or without seam allowance Jirup?
I haven't measured anything yet. I meant the difference in your measurements. There seems to be an inch difference (crown 22" circumference and band 11.5" folded). You may have misheard Glory.
Take this formula.
22" ÷ (2 × 3.14) = 3.5"
Alternatively you can do
22" ÷ 6.28 = 3.5" 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs, I get how you found the radius, I’m asking about when you measured at 9:04. Thank you
Glory, that quarter inch would end up being half inch when you consider the whole hat. 😀
Thanks for this video!(but isn't the extra 1cm seam going to make it bigger?(🤔🧐🥴).
Did you mean the seam allowance?
making the crown you mentioned adding to the seam allowance before folding and cutting and spreading the parts out, then mentioned seam allowance again. I am very very confused now
You only add seam allowance once on the crown 🙂
where do i find part 2 of the bucket hat?
It will be uploaded today Kate 😀
