I’ve had the tune of this song stuck in my head for YEARS and I’ve just rediscovered it since primary school. We used to sing this all the time in assembly. Such a beautiful waiata.
I'm an Aussie and this beautiful song made me cry, because it personifies everything that is pure and lovely. It also brought back memories of when my parents and I travelled to New Zealand for a holiday, and we fell in love the country...in particular the Maori culture and music. My mother was a soprano and she won many hearts with her singing of Now is the Hour and Pokare Kare Ana... such wonderful memories for me.
This song was written for my great aunt, Kuini Ryland, of Tokomaru Bay (Ngati Porou) and it was written as a love song by neighbouring Ngati Kahungunu chief, Paraire Tomoana, with the help of Maori politician, Sir Apirana Ngata. And yes, Paraire Tomoana was a member of the 28th Maori Battalion.
+Island Gal This is like a month late haha, but here is a translation of the lyrics: They are agitated, the waters of Waiapu, But when you cross over girl, they will be calm. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. I have written my letter, I have sent my ring, so that your people can see that I am troubled. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. My love will never be dried by the sun, it will be forever moistened by my tears. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. And +Koppa Dasao, I’m no expert in Te Reo Maori, but I’m pretty sure the only loanword in this text is “ringi” which means “ring”. As far as I know, all the other words used are of Maori origin :)
@@ccx7004 This version is missing the third stansa. Whati whati taku pene ka pau aku pepa Ko taku aroha mau tonu ana e. The fourth one is less obvious, and the only one I'm less than certain is an English loanword, but I'm still pretty sure the origin for that word is English.
9 years ago I was on Air NZ heading home to Aust. from the US...missing my wife....and drinking gin and tonic..sitting up in the pointy end and I asked the personable steward about this song and to my amazement and eternal joy he sang it for me and his two colleagues joined in......well maybe it was the gin....but I had tears streaming down my face.....as an Aussie l regard this as the most beautiful love song.....good on you NZ......this is truly a treasure
New Zealand has so much culture like this song which brings back memorable primary school days of singing and listening to Maori songs. NZ is the best country in the World by far!
Today our New Zealander guest at the university played this anthem after the presentation she made about the country. We love it! Greetings from Turkey! :)
Yes, i guess you are proud to be New Zealanders and you are entitled to be proud. Small country, huge heart. We, as allies remember the courage of your soldiers and thank you for your sacrifice. The Maori battalion is a legend among warriors and their courage will be a b bench mark for warriors ahead.
I just found out about the existence of this aong recently. Needless to say, I was entranced. The feeling I got after listening to it for the first time is something that I haven't got before, and wouldn't get since.
i learned this song when i was in primary school, back in the early 70s. Still remembered the lyrics till now. A lovely song... Greetings from Singapore!
I heard this beautiful piece of music a few times when we traveled to NZ in 2010. I am a proud Australian but the more I hear it the more I feel a Kiwi as well, The video is a credit to you and I only wish our "where the bloody hell are you" ad was even a quarter of the quality of this. Congratulations, BigSyz, you can be very proud. Doug
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! There are not words to describe the beauty of this song!! Only a man who really LOVED his country could write such a beautiful song!!
I'm the same as you when I hear this song. My heart swells and I'm a 4th generation Aussie. Since I can remember I have always had a drawing to New Zealand. Must be a previous life thing.
This makes me cry. I lived 3 years in beautiful Aotearoa, which I adopted as my second home! Haven't been to many places in the world, but NZ is definitely a very special place on this planet! Its people and landscapes are beautiful!
I have listened to many version of this magnificent song on youtube, but this one is the best so far. I once returned across Lake Wakatipu on the wonderful SS 'Earnslaw'. The pianist played this song, and I was the only person on the whole vessel not singing. Even teenagers were giving their all. Roderick B Smith (Australia)
My 5th Grade teacher was Maori. He taught the class this song. We would sing it as he played along on his ukulele. We also used to sing Wooden Heart in Maori too!
I saw it there too, what a great moment. NZ really is God's own country, a spectacularly beautiful place and great people. I'm Australian, and love the fact this unwrecked paradise is so close. It's clean, it's independent and it hasn't been wrecked by rampant third world immigration. They have their own distinct culture, and overall, respectfully integrated the original inhabitants. NZers - keep your independence and don't let Australia, the US or the third world overrun your beautiful home!
Wow, that tugs at the kiwi heartstrings!I remember learning this in standard 2, in Social Studies ( yes folks, I'm THAT old lol). Peace & love to all expat kiwis X
born in australia but spent first 13 years of my life in nz-my dad came from invercargill-remember learning this at school,in the maori language and at 62 years of age can still sing it.Back in oz now but nz has all my best childhood memories for me.I sometimes feel more kiwi than aussie but thats not a bad thing
Left Ireland after the Earth quake hit , worked with switched on electrical Christchurch, very proud to be apart of the CQC AND EQR work help and recovery... beautiful country and peoples ❤ I really miss NZ ,, the bog bar 🍸 😢 best years of my life
Beautiful video as a background for such a hauntingly beautiful song. New Zealand ( especially South Island ) has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth and blessed with wonderful people.
I only lived there for 4 years in the mid to late 50s but had to learn this beautiful song plus the Maori farewell. Pity I can't sing but love singing along whenever I hear these beautiful songs.
I love this song ! The melody is very popular in the south west of France, among people fond of rugby. Some new zealander soldiers transmittted this song to some Basque and Occitan choirs during WW1. Then, it began in France, an Occitan song, inditulated "Adiu e bona fortuna" (Farewell and good luck). I spend the 40 first years of my life thinking that it was an Occitan or Pyrenean song ...So, the Maori and Pyrenean song are astonishly similar...Thanks for sharing.
I walked the Via Podiensis this year and I was struck how similar the Basque culture is to our Maori and New Zealand culture, love for music, humour, food and of course rugby.
I'm not from NZ but spent almost a year there and have been a kiwi since. This song and video makes me swell with pride for my "second home", really well done!
This is a song from my childhood, i'm almost 70 now and Sunday dinners in Yorkshire were never complete without "Two way family favourites" a programme that connected British forces all over the world with families in UK on the radio. This song was often requested as I think English Troops had heard Kiwi troops singing it and it struck a chord. I also seem to remember a mixed language version That started off something like "Pokarakare ana means a ripple on the ocean" Though I prefer the original version. Thanks NZ for a lovely memory.
This song is one of the most inspiring, ethnic combining, understandings of what it is to be Kiwi, born or elected. The very soul of the song is who we are. I am a New Zealander!!!!
I sang this with the (on field) choir at the recent Wales V New Zealand match in Cardiff. My favourite song from a memorable day with my two daughters, Cerys and Rhian and the Abertillery Orpheus Choir.
Oh wow! I love the song & it really make me cry the song is very so emotional. I love Maori songs although I may not understand the language. What a beautiful songs. Go New Zealand love it.I start crying in tear thanks for sharing.
Nothing says 'New Zealand' more than Dame Kiri singing this song. To hear this as our anthem at the Olympic Games would be incredible. There wouldnt be a dry eye in the stadium.
