    Frontier announced last week that they are closing applications for the player minor faction system.
    In this video we take a look at the available evidence suggesting that they might be looking at something altogether more accessible to every player. o7 CMDRs

    My number one proposal for player built bases would be, to be able to manufacture engineering mats in your own production complexes.
    Labs give data, refineries give raw materials, manufacturing plants give manufactured engineering mats and so on.
    You would have to deliver mined ores from asteroids and components from stations to keep the machinery going - essentially you need trade routes.
    Other players could stop at your base and buy engineering materials from you (if you specialize in one set particularly) and trade in some ore or goods.
    There could even be NPC raids which you have to defend yourself from, otherwise some of your goods could get stolen. (This mechanic already exists in form of those defense missions)
    There should be storage buildings that increase your capacity, production buildings, power buildings and defense structures. Again, all of these already exist.
    This feature could eliminate the engineer grind in one swipe, create a lot of new content for solo players and teams alike and most importantly, it would connect a ton of already existing gameplay systems all at once.

    Base building and colonising the galaxy would make so much sense! Especially in light of the current Thargoid war that may be pushing us out of the bubble. As if we needed any extra motivation to build bases all over the galaxy, but whatever. It makes me dream now, though I'm also aware of what a gigantic undertaking lies ahead for Frontier if they really want to pull this off. And it would give a whole new meaning to the massive postponement of the "major feature rework" to the end of the year. Something even I could tolerate in this case :D

      You ever build a base in No Man’s Sky?? You build it but then never get back to it. They made the freighter ship your mobile base, which is basically a ship you walk around in. Doesn’t ED already have it? Those large ships that you pay weekly to use?

      I love the idea of humanity being scattered all over the galaxy. The bubble could be a no man's land for scavengers and pirates.

      @troglodyte8791 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes well there is a problem with that too tho systems with 200 carriers are just annoying. i think players should be able to station a carrier in empty systems outside the bubble and after time and use it will have a possibility to upgrade to a small station and eventually a cube and a big station. the owner of the carrier would be a new faction that in the beginning is the leader faction of that system and can choose to be part of one of the bigger powers if one wishes this but being a leader of that faction also makes you vulnerable to the politics in the game but having 30k bases in popular systems would just suck

    Excellent piece of speculative reporting. I've always hoped that any eventual base building similar to ship interiors would have to have associated gameplay to ensure continued player engagement, imagine being able to purchase mining rights on a planet, building a base, surface mining addons for the SRV, defences etc. On the issue of ARX, I know all of these things takes time and has development costs associated but it really seems that the options to purchase cosmetic enhancements is being sorely underused by Frontier.

      @cmdr.jabozerstorer3968 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've often said being able to set up mining on planets is something that could be a good fit for ED. Frontier: Elite 2 had the surface mining limpets that you had to collect after a certain time, so an extansion of that with whole mining setups would work too. You could defend it with NPCs, earn credits, earn materials and a lot more. Mining Assets also already are used in game and they could probably be tweaked.
      You'd probably have to limit the amount of planets or Systems you can do it in though. I'd also love that if we do get a chance to have player homes, we have the ability to set them up out in the black and not easily findable with surface scans. I like the idea of having a hideaway that nobody knows is there, unless they happen to find it by accident.

    I'd love if they rolled a revamp of engineering, materials and commodities into this. Imagine if player structures could manufacture materials from commodities or mining (maybe mining of commodities). Maybe players could even sell engineered items or have a workshop that sells unlocked blueprints. Some upkeep missions could even be cool, maybe periodically your mining lasers come under attack, and either you can go deal with the problem, or post it as a mission that other players can resolve at cost to you. A lot of cool things could be done to tie it in to the rest of the game.

    Interesting thoughts and quite exciting really. I still find it surprising that we have fleet carriers and we haven’t been able to use Arx for things inside our fleet carriers. My favourite things for ships are the bobbleheads… I’d spend a fortune on things for my fleet carrier. You know a giant poster of my commander draped on the walls (yes, vanity) to potted plants from mysterious worlds such as brain trees etc. To do this with base building as well would certainly bring money into the game.

    If feel like basebuilding was the original intent of the "Building Schematic" items, as well as (to a lesser extent) the Ship and Vehicle schematics. Whichever way that they choose to go about it, if colonization and base building are in the future for Elite, then I'm very much looking forward to it. I really hope that this extends to player-crafted space installations as well.

    Thank you for the great video o7 I was literally speaking with my wife about this all the other day. Yeah, it does make us wonder whether the Thargoid war could be an avenue into base building with maybe even a new focus / mechanics for expanding (re-housing) humanity to those new colonies.

    I imagine that X4 and EVE Online are probably looked at closely by Frontier. In my opinion Player Agency could be expanded to an off-the-chart level with inclusion of mechanics similar to what is found in those games. I'd like to see it. As always, however, I have to say that I wish there were more options for deep role-play. For one example: creating a sub-societal class of law-breakers, where they must use pirated or salvaged equipment and operate out of hidden bases (or anarchic systems) rather than just out in the open like any other 'law-abiding' faction. Any non-lawful Commanders or NPC pilots should be forced to work in the shadows. (Oh, and purchasing false IDs for docking purposes at legitimate stations...cool stuff). This could (COULD, I repeat) go hand in hand with base building, Player Agency, and creation of remote factions on systems outside the bubble (a la The Consortium) but built by the player-base. I remember the fun I had in Freelancer finding the Asteroid bases of criminal factions. Not extremely well implemented, but the ambiance was great. Ah well, I can dream.

    Rather than base "Building" of the likes seen in NMS or Minecraft, which I don't think will at all sit well in the more grounded reality of gameplay in ED, I would rather see bases be modular purchases that need to be shipped to a location, and thereby needing a large ship to deploy them, e.g. something like the caches POIs found on surfaces, and the laser drill mining POIs, it makes sense to leverage these kind of existing in-game assets. It would make base "building" much more engaging and require interaction with the other elements of the game, earning, purchasing, trucking, exploring for suitable locations, multiple trips to build it, then defending it from NPC raids. I certainly don't want to see magical hand waving producing walls and systems out of nowhere... and I also don't want them to be able to grow to the extent that the framerate drops to negative figures within sight of them.
    It would be nice to be able to collect things/purchase cosmetics with real money and in-game earned ARX to personalise them - and for them to have additional benefits, such as a workshop menu for ship repair or tinkering in some kind of additional personal engineering abilities beyond the existing engineer grind. Howabout the ability to self-engineer to say 40% of traditional engineers ability with just common surface collectable materials and a timer. E.g. Transfer a ship component to the base workshop, provide materials and come back after 8 hours to a semi-decent modification.
    Similarly I'd also like the opportunity to 'rent' a hab room in any existing surface settlement. Make an interesting location become my home, where I can log out, and return to/respawn at. Some of the existing surface settlements are fantastic locations its a shame I cannot feel more like I am more than just a visitor.
    Finally, also some additional base-like features like the above for carriers too would be a nice touch for those that don't want to be tied to a particular system. And a smaller exploration variant carrier type that sips at the tritium.

      Idk man, ive been playing a lot of star citizen recently and the ability to go from pilot seat to on-foot activities with a walk through your ship has added incredibly to my immersion. It makes repetitive tasks feel less so because its a flow of events, whilst in elite you get frequent breaks in gameplay which takes you away from the space feeling every time you teleport from ship to surface. And my biggest argument for why im alright without them before playing star citizen was that its just a waste of time walking back and forth. Not once have i felt like this in star citizen, and i flight and avenger titan but have been also using a reclaimer (one of the biggest ships in the game i think). It just feels smooth and a fun thing to do whilst thinking about what you'll go and do next.
      So to conclude, ship interiors in a space simulator adds to the immersion and can only better the feeling of the game, alongside with base building mechanics :D

    • @brianmolony
      @brianmolony ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yann9915 I agree with immersion would be added which is good. But ED ships are huge. Walk from one end to a cutter to the other. Now imagine your ship is under attack for that trip. I get board just walking from my large ship to the hanger elevator. If game play was added, like ship repair from the inside. Cool. But just making me walk to the cockpit doesn't sound like it is worth the development time or the hit on system resources.

    Cosmetics for player housing, in whatever form it takes, are a license for FDev to print their own money. People go absolutely nuts over cosmetics, and in addition to being a revenue stream, FDev can also use it as a mechanism to drive player engagement in the game by giving away cosmetics linked to achievements. A good example of this would be Star Wars The Old Republic, where in addition to store bought items, you get given housing cosmetics for beating bosses in the flashpoints ("dungeons" and raids), or for completing certain questlines, achieving certain milestones, and from random drops in the world. It gives you reasons to go out there and play the game, and "playing the Sims in your MMO" while decorating your house afterwards is surprisingly fun. It'll be extra work for FDev to implement, but I *cannot* think that it isn't worth their while, from both financial and game longevity / player engagement points of view.

    • @lcunofoollikeone
      @lcunofoollikeone ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBuurPit I must admit I really do like the idea of player driven expansion to extend the bubble or start new ones. It would pretty much be just a bit more progen and server rules so easy to develop as it wouldn't require new assets. BGS is fine but I'd like factions and powers to build new outposts and starports too in response to player activity. Mining hotshots might get a refinery outputs. Player trade brings in entertainment installations or a coriolis. That sort of thing.
      So I'm thinking base building would be cool. With upkeep costs. If you don't keep up the payments the base gradually deteriorates until its abandoned and derelict. Services can earn passive income for the base if you can drive traffic.

  • @maxjohn6012
    @maxjohn6012 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If I could have my own base somewhere out in the black - whether on a landable planet, a tiny outpost station, or something else... that would be really cool. I mean really, really cool. I'd love it. That said, I have little hope the FDEV would pull it off. I *want* them to pull it off, to make it successful, but I can't help but imagine that, if they do it, it will be undermined by either the requirement for multiple players to be involved, or by (like with FCs) massive maintenance costs, or some ungoldy grind... or some combination of the above (and they'd likely find some new ways to mess it up). My money is on the feature rework being just some tweak to powerplay, or possibly engineering, and the closing of PMF applications just being something they no longer want to or are able to deal with on a dwindling budget and with a shrinking development team. I know I'm being pessimistic... I would absolutely love to be proven wrong, for them to reinvigorate the game with some joyful, accessible, fresh stuff. It's just that, despite many opportunities, they haven't done that since I started playing, just after Horizons released - and on top of that they don't seem to have ever been motivated to fix or improve things to any meaningful degree when they have introduced new features. Odyssey still runs like crap, engineering is still a massive grind, FCs still seem like a painful time and money sink, on-foot combat is still naff, third party external tools are still required to get anything done - all while the company's share price and the number of people playing are both on a downward trend. I'm not going to stop playing, I'm loving my current exploration expedition and am looking forward to doing some new stuff when I return to civilisation, and I will continue to encourage other people to play (I bought a friend a copy the other day!) I just think they need to pull off something really good to make the community feel substantially more positive about the game, and FDEV have not got a good track record of doing that.

    Completely at guesswork, I imagine "player owned companies" that work like much like BGS factions, but work on their own "layer". Also, unlike the BGS faction, the player would have more say on where they expand and could influence their states by investing or withrawing credits. Player owned buildings might slot into that system. It'd be nice to have something to waste our in-game billions on. Even the carrier maintenance is too cheap for the ridiculous amounts of credits I earn. I'd probably build an economically unviable base to Cat's Paw Nebula as a vanity project.

    Nothing says they’re shutting down the player minor factions tho. They are saying applications are shutting down. Maybe the big news is that they’re going to create an IN GAME solution to create and maintain a player faction.
    Maybe they’re simply going to add a way for us to own real space in the entire galaxy. In this game, space is big. REALLY BIG. We’d be able to own a player station, player surface outpost, or something like this very easily and those that want to could form a station in deep space. When or if the thargoids destroy the bubble, we’d be able to remake it anywhere we want to. Maybe the intent was for the bubble to be destroyed all along.
    Maybe THIS is the key feature they want to overhaul? It’s the BGS that they’re going after…

    Basebuilding would have to be very modulare, like the Fleet Carryers. that you can build like Refineries and Wokrbenches in there so other people and yourself can craft anything from weapons to modules and drones, so we could make selling stations out in the Verse. Or even make up Missions too. And call it your Home. And ofcoulrs also an Safe station, where you have to build your own Turrets for defence, somethig like that. id realy love that in the Game.

    Base building is a sorely missed feature. It just makes huge amounts of sense to let people/factions build, work together and expand.
    I also think there's a lot of room for growth in squad based combat, where your squad or faction, is given a mission to accomplish that will require formulating a strategy that if you do it wrong will result in failure. Like perhaps you need a certain combination of roles, doing activities in a coordinated manner, to get the mission completed.
    If you have modular basebuilding, combined with better squad based teamwork, that allows you to let factions create their own "training missions" where they modularly set up a defense system in a barren part of space and then people can attack it to try and see if they can win. This would let players create much more dynamic content with frontier having to do to much custom content.

    I'm just not clear on how bases would be a good thing for the game unless it introduced a deeper mechanic like custom player ship manufacturing or new types of gameplay loops associated with mining and trade. I enjoyed some of Odyssey, I did the grinds for engineers for a fleet carrier for an anti xeno, but I don't know if I'd want to grind for a system like base building without new game systems built around it. Example - allow us to explore earthlike worlds and build a base there to exploit resources and build new types of ships, manufacture new goods etc.

    I think every such player base should be consistent across instances and persistent also in solo mode. So I do not think we could get base building similar to the NMS. I do not know what impact would have thousands of custom player bases lying planet surfaces on the fdev servers. Perhaps it is not technically possible to implement in the ED current environment.
    Anyway, I think that in the case we get player bases, it would be something similar to fleet carriers - it would be completed right at the purchase and not modular or extensible.

    After seeing what's happened with fleet carriers, I don't think Frontier would be able to implement actual base building. At best, something like a ground based fleet carrier might work. I have a dozen bases in No Man's Sky, all different layouts. What would that kind of flexibility do to performance in Elite? I can't shake the feeling that ending the PMF process is more a case of "Doug", the staff member who processed the applications, is getting reassigned or downsized.

    It makes sense. I can imagine a game mechanic where the player plans the base or building and then must supply a foreman with the right materials or cargo. If done right this could lead to a player economy if they let us set purchase orders. That would even lead to bases further out offering more money for specific cargo to support base building efforts. Imagine a string of landable player owned outposts from the bubble to Colonia. Dare to dream.

    Base Building would make sense. So inside the bubble or a system ran buy a faction you would have to get permission or rent - lease space on a body. then if the system changed hands you would either reapply or relocate depending on who you are aligned with. If outside the bubble where no one owns the system it would be up to you to maintain security . I could see a lot of new game play with this.

    Basebuilding and the ability to see your loot would make this game a goldmine. If people could join and make random bases around and trade pirate goods and loot for ship upgrades, it would be very popular. Frontier could even sell pre fabriced base sets to players. I would buy a base and set it up on a random planet. If they want to limit the base bubble, make 3 star systems available for base building and try it out. If its done right it might be a goldmine for Frontier and bring back old players. We all like to build and manage bases. You could upgrade your base with engineers, repair facilities, black markets and a bar. The possibilities are endless. You could gather some friends to go out pirating and collecting materials to expand the base. Build defences and barracks. And hire mercenaries for protection. Basebuilding is just to good to be let out of a huge galaxy.

    What also speaks to that: in the past year FDev has set up little one system bubbles several thousand LY away. Player, or even faction owned bases are absolutely overdue. And I say this as someone who probably won't build/buy one because I really enjoy being out in the black, foot-loose and free. But I'm sure there are a LOT of players that absolutely will want to build bases and stations all around the galaxy. Get ready to see signs like "Last fuel for 500 light years!" all along the route to Colonia. Or other must-see sights. With so much of the galaxy just completely uninhabited it's a given that people will find their own little patch of sky, or planet, to homestead. Those early bases could expand into full-on starports, really using very much the same economic model as fleet carriers do: You need to buy a starter base, pay for the services it offers, maybe add expansions to the base for residents. For those that are interested in becoming a Mayor, or Governor of their own towns, ATTRACTING residents and workers, as well as trade and jobs, becomes the play loop. _IF_ this happens, I expect the first ones will be along busy travel routes and tourist destinations, and places with good resource availability.
    I play No Man's Sky as well as Elite Dangerous. While I spend the majority of my time on my capitol ship, I do, in fact, have a nice little base on a paradise planet. Like I said, it's not really _my_ thing, but I know it will be for a LOT of people and settlements will crop up everywhere. The _challenge_ will be keeping those settlements from getting GANKED left and right, because if there isn't some kind of protection for them, like a fleet carriers invulnerability, the trolls, gankers, and griefers (A Pox on them ALL) will have field day.

I'd also like to see gas giant interactivity. Being able to visit mining platforms harvesting gas from the upper atmosphere or something. Taking gas samples from the ones that contain life. Even if we can't land on planets like ELWs, WWs, and AWs we should be able to take samples for Vista.

    It's hard to imagine player bases in ED. As it creates many questionnable questions :) The first is persistence. We know that the only player persistent objects in the server are Carriers and they need much time to be changed (server side jump cooldowns...). The second one, implied by everything behind FC limitations, indicates that player bases would only have a few shapes available and more of that as settlement buildings are in the same instance of the planet. We also cannot expect any inside customizations. So what to hope ? Renting existing base types on new planets at probably predefined places at worst where we ask for (coordinates) at best (I don't believe in this one) ? For what price ? even more expensive than FC ? I also don't believe as someone told somewhere, in passive income like in X4. Guild Hall ? FD seems to hate guilds and implemented FC as just expensive ships. Then what's the point in player bases ? Just another feature for a small part of the small remaining ED community ? I'm really not sure. I'd personally prefer the base buying system of NMS which interactively ask us to provide things, gives us a few simple missions for base improvement and interactive rent. - When it comes to on foot Thargoids, I hope they will never ever implement that as I deeply believe it's one of the most anthropocentric stupid ideas. We're talking about a *millions* years civilisation. And they would risk their own lives when machines or disposable (already existing "drones") items can be used to transform the enemy into meat bowls ? Foutaises, fadaises ! (no English correct and polite translation, "crap, slush" being the closest) Thargoid "on foot" machines ? Yes, this one is believable. - If PMF were removed from the game then... I don't know. I don't watch many of them. Inara still hadn't been rescued/freed from Thargoid invasion when I looked at it, Mobius seems to be handled by NPCs and I'm fine with that... I don't have any ships nor will to grind equipment to fight Thargoids (as I do in all MMOs, end game stuff grind ? No thanks :) ) The only major feature I'd love to see is something I talked about on the forums : Powerplay becomes current Open (PvP), current open becomes PvE-coop only (new mode, no player damages and why not also no collisions) and Seo Jin Ae becomes the Political leader for "a bug's life" players (I loved this film) 🤣

      It has to be the next step in E.D If its done well. Like something from ARK, imagine what we could do. Just a pre fabriced base to buy on Frontier shops would be popular. And you could upgrade this and use loot to maintain it. Set up defences and build walls and hire mercenaries. And having a landing pad for your ship. This is the goldmine for E.D if they can pull it of. This is where the money is. I hope they understand that.

    I'd love to see it, I just don't know how viable it is with the game's P2P architecture. I have no hope whatsoever that Frontier are doing anything at all other than reducing workload on a reduced workforce. There will be no base building. The game is slowly but surely moving into maintenance mode and end of life. The game may totter on for up to 10 years more. But I think all the development that we have seen is all there will ever be.
    I would love nothing more than to proven wrong. But Frontier have proven over and over that if there is a bad decision available to make, then they will choose that over providing what the players actually want.

    If we ever get the ability to colonise a planet or build a base then my play time will likely double. Sadly I doubt that’ll ever happen simply due to the engine likely not being remotely able to support such a feat in any kind of satisfying way.
    I want modular base building like no man’s sky, but without the garbage that is no man’s sky and it’s extreme nihilistic tint and aimless gameplay.
