I think I got this. So, he's making a video where he shares how he made technology to live forever by replicating himself. However, Alan can't live beyond his wife. His wife stops him, and even though he was able to make another "Alan," even Teddy can't live beyond the image of his wife, and malfunctioning with the image of a pink amorphous sphere as his wife (a clear shot on how the physical can be altered, but the emotional will stay intact). MEANING that Alan isn't living, and can't ever live because he can't move on. No matter how he tries to run from it, it will always haunt him, just like the elderly folk. His mistakes breed in his head, which is why the graph is important. Take his test subjects as an example of him: The little boy is dying, and copying himself doesn't stop him from dying. He has a disease that eats at him, and that disease is synonymous with Alan's self loathing psyche. Notice that the Computer version of the old lady just kept repeating "I'm cold. I don't like being cold," insinuating death, loneliness, and in a way, her inner thoughts. The old man not only made his wife, but made himself as well, to ensure that he was always there; something he probably never did until his wife croaked. Alan can't love himself no matter what, and finds himself disappointing. His wife died and he never did anything to show her his love. He even raced around the idea of infidelity, which shamed him. How could he ever amend his broken pride, heart and soul? By starting over. In short, If we can't move on, then how can we even fathom to live the next day, let alone forever? "This is my wife. I love my wife." - Quote of the day.
On more of surface level, it's definitely also a joke on futurists and transhumanists. They often use their predictions to distract from their sad personal lives, and they think that technological progress will preserve their current identities forever (as they are now) when if anything it will do the exact opposite. All those digital copies of people, whether they have any self-awareness or not, are clearly not the original people. Even if digital consciousness becomes a reality one day, digital immortality is a false promise and always will be.
I would say that he never had a wife to begin with, which is part of the facade he’s creating as a trans-humanist. He has programmed this ideal version of himself into his computer and has told him that he loves his wife. But after all the tests he went through to get his personality the way HE wanted (which isn’t necessarily the true Alan), the computer malfunctions as it realises there’s a missing piece, his wife. That’s why the gelatinous blob is created by the AI. It has hit a crossroad in its programming, as it is designed to portray Alan as an incredibly caring husband yet sees no proof of his wife ever existing. Therefore, it brings up this mass of pink skin that remains completely unmolded, showing that the person that Alan really wants in his life is not there and never has been. This is also represented by Alan calling his wife a ‘he’ close to start, illustrating the lie that he’s trying to perpetuate to not only the audience, but also himself
I appreciate the insight but I don’t think this is quite it. I can’t explain why but just how I feel. I great have no insight myself who knows it’s goddamn Alan probably has 15 sub plots.
Holy shit, Alan sounds dead serious when he says "I'm going to come into your house" at 7:10. That, the following image of him looking through the window, and then the sudden close-up at 7:15 are eerie as hell. It makes me feel boxed-in. He's good at balancing comedy with horror.
I love the uncertain pause for laughter at 1:37 and the almost imperceptible look of disappointment as nobody laughs at his joke. Alan Resnick is a master of comic subtlety

I like this video because it demonstrates how trying to "live forever" through things we create like artwork or inventions isn't a good idea. Having a legacy can be a good thing but not at the expense of our present lives. This video is a reminder that no matter how much we devote to our work, to art or technology, real human life and relationships are sacred and irreplaceable.
“I’m going to come into your house. I’m going to come into your home and stay with you for two months. I’ll bring a cot and a humidifier, and I’m gonna find out what makes you *y o u* .” please, no
"Teddy, thank you so much for helping me share this message tonight." "You are welcome, Alan." "You are my only son, and I built you in my image. I love you, Teddy." *"I lOvE mY wIfE"*
I think Alan is worried he is going to stop loving his wife. His dream scared him of this so much that his subconscious immediately killed him. That's why it's so important that he lives forever as he is NOW, because he still loves his wife. During Step 4, his answers (to himself) profiled what he wanted to be preserved about him--his love for his wife--so that's all that Teddy talks about. But Alan acknowledges that Teddy is a different person. Has Alan already changed? The video explores a fear of changing. To preserve yourself, you need to sear your face into your mind. Then, you need to draw it, to see whether you've changed. Next, your face is captured as it is now and made into software modeled to look and move just like you (if we take the "tests" like the wiggle test as more than just a joke and understand them as really making something realistic, or maybe even hyperrealistic). You're preserving a single moment, not YOU. The testimonials explore the concept. A man can't let his wife go, so he recreates her, but he could only remember how she annoyed him. An elderly woman has already lost herself and can't even hold a conversation with herself. A mother wants to keep her son with her forever but in exchange gave up on having him NOW. I think the "uncanny valley" conversation is about that slow march of change. It's disturbing to change to a point where you can't see yourself as anything other than a moving corpse. Framing the infomercial as one preoccupied with death helps hammer home the fact that maybe all that we really are, in the end, is a slow procession of corpses moving uncannily through time, each body unable to recognize itself as the ones ahead and behind it. I mean, Alan got an internship at a morgue for this project. Why? What did a morgue have to do with digitizing himself and others? He could have learned about the six facial muscles from anywhere (like a doctor, or maybe a scultor). It's because he's terrified of changing. When you're dead, you don't change, but you're also not human. The avatars are designed to "take over for you" after you die. You essentially pick the person you want to place in the valley, and because of the clot that keeps you from seeing yourself as you are (and that clearly cannot be circumvented), you'll only ever be able to preserve a fragment that will never be you. The fear of changing turns you into a corpse, so you have to change, even if the ways you think you might change are scary or will make you feel guilty. And, on a higher level, technology helps us avoid our fears rather than talk about them. Well, just my thoughts. What an amazing short.
It's a shame more people haven't seen this comment. I haven't seen anyone else in the comments so far look at it this way and it makes a lot of sense, especially considering at the end Alan says it'll "make nothing else you ever do, ever matter"
Omg man I could hardly follow you, if at all.. I found some things you say there a little disputable even though the topic as such shouldn’t be really even disputable..! But hello Earth.. going back to Alan.. he’s absolutely fantastic😅👌🤯 It’s all like a very abstract reality show but I may watch more, he’s purely magnetic..!
@sylwiaratajczyk8534 It's just my reading of the video, and it's my reading for years ago. I bet I could dispute some of what I said, too, but I think I still agree with the overall gist of it. But it's great when people disagree with readings, because that means there's a discussion to have.
Gotta love the information given on the Schrader Clot. - The Schrader Clot is made of cartilage - Diagram shows clot in slightly different shade and with extra lines - Bullet points illustrate specific concepts - People who look at this graphic see a blue brain - One human child is born every day I feel like I learned so much about the Schrader Clot from that slide.
So after breaking out of the asylum, Alan tutorial went on to find love, get married and become very successful as a functioning human being. If thats not a success story i dont know what is.
Meta just announced a real life version of "Live Forever As You Are Now," in the form of personal AI you can train to be a copy of you which will live in virtual reality so people can talk to a virtual copy of you any time they want. Even when you're gone. Everyone prepare to have your own personal Teddy!
The thing there though is that these AI models don't allow anything to be cynical and psychotic so its not really going to simulate my personality very well. It needs to be more like ghost in the shell where I can search to find a body to inhabit once I'm permanently in the net.
I like it. It's not as nightmare inducing as This House Has People In it, but it conveys it's own subtle creepiness. It isn't going to keep me up at night, but it will make me think. I love Resnick's way of blending together several overarching themes, then presenting it behind an initially innocuous mask that eventually evolves into something totally sinister. He also has a novel approach in terms of adding the perfect "adult swim" brand of dry, surreal humor. "Pieces of a ragdoll mankind, that we can create." - Radiohead, Identikit
This was made before all that and thus was not supposed to connect in any way as far as I'm aware. I'm pretty sure this is just meant to be (and in my opinion is) hilariously strange
10:25 I love the clear cut here from Alan being exaggerate positive and perfect -> to -> doing mistakes in talking, mimic and couldn't even catch the object.
gamer-boy175 alantutorial is just a fake webseries by Alan Resnick. He has already moved on to other things, so sorry. If you are a fan of his work, then I recommend "Unedited Footage of a Bear" and "This House Has People in It."
Alan divorced his wife, and not on friendly terms. Like that elder, Alan had a companion wife devised for Ted, but given the trauma the real ex-wife had given him, he decided to delete her. Ted did not like this and managed to bring her back from the Recycle Bin, but not without serious damage. But it's okay, his love for her is so true he calls her pretty even though she's now a wrinkled ball. _P. S._: this is not even completely my theory, just a comment in here I never forgot and was buried over time.
This seems like it's talking about the difference between our true selves and our online persona. Alan obviously is some kind of relationship leech, but Teddy is totally dedicated to his wife. Similarly, every single digital clone is very different from the person it is supposed to represent. It's really telling when Teddy talks about imperfections. Maybe subconsciously we seek to preserve our memories through the internet, but by leaving out our imperfections, we fail in our goal.
I love this guy. Ingenious comedic setups, manages to make you think while you laugh. He's different enough from Tim & Eric to be entertaining in his own right while carrying the quirkiness that they brought to AS. Alantutorial is a blast to watch as well. Keep it up Alan, I can't wait to see what you do next!
Guys don't fall for this scam! I called in and that weirdo stayed in my house and asked me dumb stuff for 2 months just to give me some computer face that isn't anything like me. Also it's not free like it says at the end. Read the small print. :(

"You are welcome, Alan."
"You are my only son, and I built you in my image. I love you, Teddy."
*"I lOvE mY wIfE"*
The fact that someone throws fruit at him at 10:49 and he isn’t even close to catching it is so hilarious to me for some reason
@@nonsensesongsin12bars Thank you! I honestly forgot I even posted that comment. I'm glad you got something out of it.
But it's great when people disagree with readings, because that means there's a discussion to have.
hes adorable. hes simply adorable i want to hold him.
Miss Jasper He's also very small, like a baby.

Well your wife's not gonna be happy be with it but okay
If that's the only objection, sounds like more than one person will be happy with it, so she's outvoted.
I love my wife she has hair.
This dude is so talented, from his skits, to tutorials, his writing. Yeah, everyone doesn't get it, but that's what makes it so damn unique
My wife has hair
I doubt you have a wife. Mainly because of your profile picture and username.
Banana Jello Did you even watch the video?
ParachuteKittens Yes I did. I know that line was in the video

Starman finally someone that thinks that too 😅
Starman and smart

This is maybe the best thing I have seen on the internet. Alan Resnick is officially one of my favourite visual artists.

Alan should really do a TED talk
BrainSeepsOut best idea ever
BrainSeepsOut Oh, I thought this was a Ted Talk.
@@narcssius is his name Ted in this?
Gotta love the information given on the Schrader Clot.
- The Schrader Clot is made of cartilage
- Diagram shows clot in slightly different shade and with extra lines
- Bullet points illustrate specific concepts
- People who look at this graphic see a blue brain
- One human child is born every day
I feel like I learned so much about the Schrader Clot from that slide.
"Every morning you're gonna wake up with me on top of you" Oh boy, please do
Uhh.. H-hey guys! I- uh, I'm Alan, and I'm, uhh, gonna show you a tutorial on how to live forever!

ALAN TUTORIAL IS OKAYYY REEEEEEEEEEEEEE yayy

So after breaking out of the asylum, Alan tutorial went on to find love, get married and become very successful as a functioning human being. If thats not a success story i dont know what is.
He also survived lynks disease
But where is dollar boï

Meta just announced a real life version of "Live Forever As You Are Now," in the form of personal AI you can train to be a copy of you which will live in virtual reality so people can talk to a virtual copy of you any time they want. Even when you're gone. Everyone prepare to have your own personal Teddy!
She sounds nice and pretty. A total package.
The thing there though is that these AI models don't allow anything to be cynical and psychotic so its not really going to simulate my personality very well. It needs to be more like ghost in the shell where I can search to find a body to inhabit once I'm permanently in the net.
HEY ALANTUTORIAL FANS!!
NOTICE HOW THE STUFF IN THE BACKGROUND IS BLUE!!
conspirecy
conspirecy
he killed his wife and clearly feels guilty
You can also hear it in his voice.
Yeah. I wish he made a white chair tutorial though. :/
"Pieces of a ragdoll mankind, that we can create."
- Radiohead, Identikit
This was made before all that and thus was not supposed to connect in any way as far as I'm aware. I'm pretty sure this is just meant to be (and in my opinion is) hilariously strange
True as its not like alan has made any horror films in the past like that would be just silly.. Maybe i should make a tutorial about that..
I saw this live when he opened up for dan deacon in like 2011, I don't think it's related to his other work beyond his specific aesthetic
10:25 I love the clear cut here from Alan being exaggerate positive and perfect -> to -> doing mistakes in talking, mimic and couldn't even catch the object.
So he finally broke free from the asylum, gave up tutorials, and started this. Amazing tutorial on how to succeed at life.
hey tutorialheads :))))

It's always surprising how many people either dislike these Adult Swims videos and/or don't understand why they are funny.
May Jesus guide their souls through the Bardos and to our God, yeshua.

I'm mad 'cause im constipated right now, i just happened to see your unrelated answer to Alica's question.
I agree, adult swim humor is the best.
I like this a lot more than the idiotic "OMG HE MUST HAVE KILLED HER" bs. That really doesn't seem Alan's style.
This man is saving millions of lives, very interesting and insightful video!!
