    I have found that when applying interfacing it works best to block fuse the interfacing to the fabric then cut it out. Saves time and frustration. No one can sew a dress in an hour in a woven. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      That’s a great tip! Thank you!

    Erin, NO ONE can sew this in an hour. ABSOLUTELY NOT! I find that these patterns that say 1 hour or 2 hours are the most time consuming. I think they are mocking us sewists!!! I really do! Too stressful to put yourself through this. I worked on New Look 6347 and it was a nightmare that took 3 days!!! Categorized and Easy 1 hour! What a joke. Never again. Your dress looks great on you. 🥰

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I almost want to write Simplicity and ask how the heck they’re deciding that these patterns are one or two hours sews. Sewing time alone was still well over 1 hour.
      I am pretty happy with the dress though, and I’ll calmly, slowly make the pattern again in the future 🤗😂

      @@ErinSews I agree with you! Slow calm sewing is the way to go.

    Just think how someone new to sewing would feel if they purchased that pattern and thought it would take them about an hour to sew!!! It would make them feel like a failure. So much of sewing is prep time, but it still takes time to pin the seams, sew them together and press them open. Setting in sleeves takes time; understtiching the facing takes time and hemming takes time. Labelling a pattern "easy to sew" would be such a better idea to me. I've found when I have a slippery fabric I just spray starch all the fabric it before hand. Investing that time up front generally pays off in the long run because cutting and sewing are easier. I'm sorry this didn't turn out to be a fun project to sew, but it was helpful for those people who actually believe the pattern manufacturers assertions. I really do like your dress, though. Hopefully your next project will be fun.

      When you spray the fabric it doesn’t ruin it?

    • @nadinewoods6971
      @nadinewoods6971 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@debcurtis3670 I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I guess I should have qualified my statement by saying that I spray starch my washable fabrics. I have never use spray starch on a fabric that required dry cleaning so I don't know how that would affect the dry cleaning process If you meant would ironing a crinkled fabric ruin it, it would flatten the crinkles. The fabric might crinkle back after laundering, but to maintain the texture of textured fabrics you can just spray it on and let it dry naturally. It takes a while to dry, but I've done that with crinkled cotton before. I have never had spray starch have any permanent effect on my washable fabrics.; they just give the fabric temporary body while you are cutting and sewing and wash out completely.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Nadine! Thank you for the tip to starch the fabric first. I’ll definitely bear that in mind for future projects.
      I know we’ve chatted before about the discouragement new sewists can face at the hands of the big 4, so I won’t reiterate it too much, but YES. You’re so right. Easy to sew would be a way better label. That being said, I realized when I went back to link the pattern that Simplicity.com has it listed as average!!! What the heck!?!

    I suppose the "1 Hour" might refer to the time you spend stomping around and muttering, 😆😆 Your dress has turned out beautifully! 💗 👍 I do watch Lara's channel, and yes! please do this again.
    I've never tried to completely make something in one hour, but who doesn't decide at the last minute that we need to make something new to wear the next day or two? lol (Guilty of that one! ) So it's definitely valuable to know how long these things actually take. I remember deciding two days before my Halloween band concert what I wanted to wear...... Wonderful video!!

      Oh I’m so happy that you liked our videos!! We’re already planning another iteration of the challenge, and I’ll be more mentally prepared for a long sew this time (despite whatever the pattern envelope says….).
      An hour of muttering is potentially still not enough, but you’re definitely onto something with that line of thinking 🫣Lara said it in her video but actually tracking how long everything took was SO enlightening.
      I’m sure your band outfit came out beautifully but I can imagine the stress of it!

    What a fun challenge! It would have taken me a week to do all you did! I think your dress came out very pretty! One thing I find helpful when sewing slippery fabrics… is I spray starch on them and press with the iron. That makes the fabric a little more manageable. I just wash the garment when I’m finished.

    Hi Erin! Well, maybe you could count the time change last weekend for the hour we lost as taking an hour off your total time 😜
    The end result is very nice, which is more important that the time it took (says the person who wasn’t involved in the timed challenge 😆). It is a great everyday dress and I am wanting to make/wear some of those for this summer myself.
    I have a few of the “1 hour” patterns and am curious how long the sew time would be for me. I’m sure not an hour!
    I totally cracked up at The Incredible Hulk comment 😂
    I love watching both you and Lara and I’m all for more collaborations with you guys 🙂

      Yes! I'm taking an hour off my time lol. I need anything I can get to feel better about that total time lol.
      The dress really is great- a timeless silhouette and very comfortable. Some people have said that the 1 hour applies to the time sitting at your machine ONLY (like not even including pressing) which might be accurate. Seems like a stupid way to classify a pattern though....
      I'm glad you liked the collab! We're already planning another 🤗

    Hilarious honey. Your poor face…. They would be a selling point and for an intermediate to experienced sewist. I would machine tack down the facings. And always always do both sleeves at the same time. It’s a time saver. The momentum is there so it helps the flow. I’ll pop over to see Laura’s now.
    You did good. Those sleeves looked fine but if needed add 1cm to the center. Not much more.
    Nice work

      For some reason I always just want to finish out the first sleeve so I can have the satisfaction of it being done, but you’re right. I should follow the flow.
      Thanks for the feedback on the sleeves! I feel less like the hulk as I wear it more 😂

    They mean sewing time only. Not all the pattern and prep work that also happens.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They do note that on the envelope, but all that hand sewing is still a lot to expect in an hour I think! I broke down how long everything took me in the “thoughts” chapter of the video.
      I think for our next collab like this I’ll time how long I’m actually at the machine, just to see if that part alone is under an hour. No pressing or anything. I’m curious!

    Workingonthis today and so far its taken 4 hours . I still have to sew the hem. I hate the rolling neck facing. I tacked it t in the back of the neck. The sleeve facing was totally unnecessary... next time, I'm using bias tape throughout.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve decided that 1 hour of sewing time is MACHINE sewing time, hence all of the hand sewing. It takes so long! I do like the pattern though, and I agree that bias tape is the way to go in the future

  • @annewhitney8809

      @ErinSews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmmm now you’ve got me thinking. I counted any pressing and unpicking into the “sewing time” but maybe for our next collab we’ll JUST time how long we’re actually sewing on the machine.
      That being said, the hand sewing definitely should count as “sewing time” and that took me forever 😅

  • @nancyloomis3046

    I think the only way you can do an average dress 👗 in an hour say, is to NOT count the prep time or maybe if it's like one of those only 2 pattern pieces patterns...something like that.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m thinking they might have only meant actual machine sewing time, and that’s why so much of the finishing was supposed to be done by hand. That’s the ONLY way I think it could be less than an hour

    What fabric did you use. I thought it looked like cotton. I guess I mis-understood, I thought you said the pattern was "sew it tonight". Oh, that must have been your mothers pattern. why not use iron in lining?

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes sorry for the confusion! The “sew it tonight” pattern was my mom’s. It’s too small for me, and not really my style, but it inspired our collab so I wanted to mention it.
      The fabric is a polyester crepe I think. I’m not 100% on the crepe part, but it’s definitely polyester.

    I never believe it, when the pattern companies says it takes one hour. You have to press your seams open. The seams have to be finished. Who are the pattern companies trying to play with?😂😂😂😂 The facing needs to be understitched. All of this takes time. Don't beat yourself up. These pattern companies know that you cannot sew a dress in an hour.
