  • Some months ago the little dumper took a trip down the hill and couldn't get back up again - over time it filled up with water and the extra weight will provide enough traction to rescue itself - or at least that's the plan!

    I have a similar dumper Maximus. Mine is also down a hilly paddock under brambles. You have just reminded me it's there so I will soon be going to do the same. It's uncanny how you have similar old machinery to myself,ie; old land rovers, old international tractor and I also am a self employed fabricator and mechanic although I do not own a forge and anvil unfortunately....Love your videos.....

    My old man had (a much older) one of those for a few decades. No steering wheel, so he just clipped a mole wrench to the steering column, and that was apparently ok. I am pleased to report that he is still doing this type of utterly stupid thing and is well into his 80's. If make do and mend had a super hero - it would be him, and it both terrifies and makes me smile, in equal measure.

    Hi Max,
    I re watched a video of yours from a year ago at the start of the full blown epidemic.
    I don’t want to saw sound sycophantic but it was painful.
    It was painful because you were saying what was in my head but unlike you I couldn’t find the words to explain the frustration I feel with people who have lost contact with the real world and reality.
    Anyway, your messages and examples are important.
    They have encouraged me to grow and re connect.

    If you give it a light wire brush with angle grinder then coat it with a mix of old diesel oil, some diesel fuel, linseed oil, CRC and an equal amount (50%) of oil based enamel paint all well mixed together. Applied on a hot day and kept dry and put in the sun as much as possible for a few days, it will keep the rust from eating it away totally for more many years, especially if you put a second coat on after a week or 2.

    I've got an old hand crank dumper too! Love it! You're right not much power, needs a run up to get up into my field. Looks like yours has a hydraulic bucket? Mines just on a lever and a chain. It's been featured in a few of my videos but can't remember which off the top of my head. Total contrast to the hired modern 6 tonne dumper I was using in this winter

  • @gonzo_the_great1675

    Max, rather than using easy-start, try a burning rag.
    A bit of rag, soaked in diesel (only needs to be a small square of cloth), light it and let the engine suck the flames up the inlet manifold as you crank it. Obvously not with an air filter in the way! That warms the cylinder/manifold. Though you will been to wait for the flames to burn down for the engine to get some air to actually start.
    I used to start my old perkins that way when the pre-heat injector was dead.
    Easy-start (I am told) can burn off carbon around the rings and lose some compression.

  • @frankdeegan8974
    @frankdeegan8974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Max, judging by the size of your land and the amount of time this engine runs, because it never gets to operating temperature or high enough engine speed to operate to clean out the cylinder, I wonder if some head work to clean the valve seats and remove the carbon build up and maybe turn up the injection pump to get a bit more power from the dumper would make it more useful. A super power house it will never be just a bit more user friendly.

    Rather than using drugs to make the old girl perform why not use the preheater from a tilly lamp soaked in meths and ignited and clipped on to the air intake just before cranking. Works with any Lister or even my Fordson major tractor. Easy start as you know makes for dry bores and there is nothing worse than a dry bore.
