    I had my cello stringed by someone else, the last couple of winds on my A string criss cross over each other essentially preventing me from unwinding it, so I've only got about 2-3cm of give where the string is still wrapped (before the string goes over the nut and down the fingerboard), and then it goes under a section itself being wound on top. If that makes sense. All my other strings are coiled neatly and don't cross over one another (with the exception of where it's threaded through the peg) and I have a much easier time tuning those, whereas my A string is super taut and won't hold. Should I attempt to rewind it? I feel like this issue is making my A string really difficult to tune.

    My husband says its no big deal to change the strings one at a time on the cello. I'm always afraid I'm going to mess up the sound post or the bridge or something big like that! So, if you change the strings one at a time like you showed us none of that will happen? Oh an what is the bran name on the string that is wrapped in red? Thanks again for your help!! Have a great day Jonathan!!

      Red? the 4th string, C string? Thomastik Spirocore - amzn.to/2sSsWyK

  • @rsorin
    @rsorin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Jonathan,
    How do you arrange the strings as they were at the beginning of the video?1
    I wander if the brand new strings take some time before they stay in tune.
    I was lucky to get a set of Thomastik Spirocore as a gift and after changing them, I've noticed that they don't stay much in tune. (this is the first time ever that i've changed the strings)
    I did as you mentioned to make them cross once and then kept them tense while rolling the peg.
    I must say that they really do make a huge difference comparing to the old generic ones.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When we loosen and/or tighten two torqued objects that are not secured to one another , we should start via the exterior fasteners and then move inward, or vice a vera. The bridge is not secured to the cello, and when tighten one side, the other side will give way just a bit. My counsel is tighten the exterior strings first when tuning after a strings change or loosen them first when initializing a strings change. This is a carry over concept from my experience rebuilding internal combustion motors that is as valid with wood as it is when metal, because torque makes not mind of your material.

    Hay un fallo generalizado a la hora de colocar cuerdas. El primero es que la cuerda no debe pisarse a sí misma, de hecho esto provoca lo que muchos quieren evitar, que estén durante un par de días desafinándose puesto que al pisarse se crean dos tensiones en la misma cuerda, mientras que si no se pisan se estira por parejo de primera hora y solo pasan unas horas de desajuste. El otro error es no dejar unos cms de cuerda fuera de la clavija, no queda tan estético pero la clavija y el mástil sufren menos tensión

  • @luna775

    Omg i just noticed the pegs of my cello are made of kinda soft kinda hard wood.. (its my first cello) the strings kinda left indentations where they have been wrapped around the peg and may break from pressure.. this sucks cuz theres only one person in my whole country that is a luthier and has a shop and may get me new ones, which i suppose would be expensive for me (i live in the third world).. on top of that who knows what happened to him since the quarantine as many businesses have closed. sometimes i think a violin would been the right choice for a string instrument, i imagine they are easier to take care of..

    • @sarahdevlin1230
      @sarahdevlin1230 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fernando, this comment is a little late but you should be able to order cello pegs online- just check that they are from a reputable seller. If postage is a problem given your location, then maybe you could look into mending the pegs? So off the top of my head that might be sanding down the grooves (NOT the end of the peg) so that they are smooth, or filling the grooves with a resin or a substance that acts like wood. If all else fails, respond to this comment and hit me up on reddit and I will purchase and post you new pegs.

    • @solmido55
      @solmido55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the location of the string hole. If the string hole is too close to the far wall of the pegbox, the string going through the hole will block the peg from being pushed into pegbox any further, and the peg will slip. A new string hole may have to be drilled. It should be situated about half way between the pegbox walls when the peg is in it's proper position.

Only buy strings on amazon if they are good qualitiy (like Larsen or Spirocore) and you find a deal there. Other than that: stay away. x
