Why India Need Nuclear Attack Submarine & why US and UK wont Give It to India? | World Affairs

  • Washington appears to have decided that the best military choice at the moment is to rely on a Cold War-type coalition, with its most trusted allies at its centre.
As a result, it has announced the AUK US trilateral security accord, a US-UK-Australian military partnership to fight China's increasing threat in the Indo-Pacific. The US and the UK will enable Australia to design and build up to eight nuclear-powered attack submarines, which is the high point of AUK US. It did, however, cause tensions between Australia and France.Because , Australia has pulled out of a $40 billion contract inked in 2016 with France to provide submarines to the Australia.
In this partnership The United States and UK will transfer naval nuclear-propulsion technology to Australia. Such a move represents a significant policy shift for the United States, which has previously gone to great lengths to prevent the transfer of naval reactor technology to other countries, with the exception of its World War II ally, the United Kingdom.
the US won’t give India nuclear submarines
Indian Navy chiefs and naval veterans have raised the prospect of Indo-US collaboration on nuclear reactor propulsion technology but their American counterparts have respectfully declined.
The US, with over 70 operational nuclear submarines, has more nuclear submarines than Russia, France and UK put together .Indian officials began discussing the possibility of buying or leasing US SSNs but the US show no commitment to a stable defence relationship by leasing a few Los Angeles-class SSNs to India
This request might have sounded out of place considering that India already operates nuclear submarines-becoming the world’s sixth country to do so when it commissioned the INS Arihant in 2016
But , However, The Arihant, is an SSBN (nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine) , a slow-moving ‘bomber’ and a stealthy launch platform for nuclear weapons But ,What the Indian navy wants are SSNs
The Arihant and three more SSBNs under construction are part of the Strategic Forces Command.
Now , if we look at the relationship between US-UK-Australia is very different from that with India, neither Washington nor London is likely to easily hand over any technology to India.
some years ago Britain said to India that - What You are asking us for the kind of technology we don’t give to even our closest allies,
Both US and UK have far greater technology, and the reactors of its latest submarines don’t need to be fueled for their lifetime, whereas the Arihant will have to be taken to a drydock, cut open, and refueled every six to seven years
US N-subs use the most sophisticated nuclear reactors. The newest Virginia class SSNs for instance have reactors that use bomb-grade uranium (U-235 enriched to over 90 %). They are designed to operate for 33 years without refuelling
With India ,The US has consistently refused to discuss any possibility of parting with knowhow on naval nuclear reactors

Indian subs may be inferior, but let me tell you that the Chinese Subs are much more inferior.
Russia helped India with technology. Indian subs are at par with the Russian subs. Though the USSR subs were of much inferior quality than the US subs but there has been a long time since the USSR has dissolved and Russia has also mastered the technology of producing nuclear subs. The Russian subs have not experienced any accident due to nuclear reactor(The 2000 kursk disaster was due to faulty torpedo and not reactor). I admit that the US submarines are much norr advanced than the Russian ones, but that does not mean that the US can stop India from producing SSNs. India is asking help from the US because it's always better to have submarines with better technology. Even if the US declines (which it will), India has nothinh to worry about, because Chinese subs quality are much more inferior than Russian(indian) ones and our competition is with China and not the US.
The US can only delay Indias success, it can never stop it.
The UsSdeclined the sale of cryogenic engines to India in 1990s and even stopped Russia from doing so. What was the result? India made its own cryogenic engine after few years. The same will happen for SSNs, since the US has declined its ToT, India will make its own.

More like we dont want a war between nuclear armed Pakistan and India. India given significant help by the West would certainly use that advantage and even if they did not Pakistan would certainly become hostile, possibly enough so to help Iran acquire nuclear weapons and give even more support to terrorists. Another factor is India is usually considered a fair weather friend and switches alliances quickly and often. The closer India is to Russia, the further it distances itself from the West.

This video promised much but ultimately didn't answer the question so I will.
To our Indian friends the reason why the US/UK won't give you this technology is because of India's historical position of neutrality, this position has meant that India didn't choose a side during the cold war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact but stayed engaged with both sides, this served India well but also posed a problem in that any sensitive military technology one side sold to India would fall into the hands of the other side by default.
Reactor technology is the penultimate of weapons technology, the highest of the high and the most closely guarded secret and the US/UK don't want it being handed over to Russia where it would certainly get leaked to China, India's long and close relationship with Russia basically means it'll never get this technology, sorry but India made it's choice long ago and despite the fact the situation with China aligns India and the US's interests the relationship between India and the US isn't on a level that the US could trust India would keep the information out of Russia's hands.
The reason Australia is only the second nation The US is going to trust with this technology is because Australia has never waivered in it's alliance with the US, every time the US need help Australia has been there, a relationship stretching back to the second world war, no other country has done that, had India done that then India would get the technology but you didn't, you chose to be uninvolved on the world stage until the world stage came knocking on your door, this is going to open opportunities to India as the world looks to another big country to balance out China, investment from the world will come pouring in which will change India forever, but because you failed to pick a side earlier simply means you wont get this particular technology.

Its disappointing the reversion to such bitterness by some Indians when things don’t go their way such as with nuke subs. “We will build it ourselves”. Lol. It's hard to describe in words how naive or ignorant you are if you think the US or UK is just going to sell you either their latest nuclear submarines or their latest nuclear submarine technology. Yes, both countries trust India as regional ally against China, but no, it definitely doesn't trust India with highly advanced military technology, nor will France by the way. There are only 2 countries who the US trusts enough in order to give them access to the latest nuclear submarine technology; the UK and Australia. Even countries such as Israel, Japan or Canada, all of them much closer US partners and allies than India, aren't given the privilege of access to such technology. So why do you think India would be any exception? In fact even Australia isn't guaranteed of it as it has been rumoured that the US wants Australia to acquire British Astute-class nuclear attack subs so they don't have to give Australia access to US technology.

But I think the biggest problem India faces is the aging population, just like China. Although China is very different, China has the capabilities to quickly move to an autonomous manufacturing
system, India’s government for some reason thinks that using the high numbers of aging population will continue to prosper.
All countries have their own economic problems but if you can’t get a well working leadership system and rid out corruption, than you might not be able to provide the correct decisions needed for the economy.

Request that you consider that the bait words are " neutral" and the veneer is "fellow democracy". The actual actions are go to Russia from the get go ( and six years before any US Pakistan exchange) and stay that way while coming up with twisted history of resentments and BS. Like thinking the US was headed to invade India in 1971. You and Pakistan got into a squabble and threatened the radiation effects of you squabble on the entire rest of the world. Second, why would the US want to invade India? Now or in 1971? Seriously.
Next, if we did why would we send one aircraft carrier?
Next, the closest one can get to Pakistan was via the sea and therefore close to India.
You didnt solve the global problem. You havent risen above squabbling with a 4th world place thats barely a country. Not only did we try, we gave you 20 years to grow into at least a regional superpower thats not threatened by Pakistan or Afghanistan ( same chaotic rogue part of the world...never mind what the map says).
      You are not neutral.
You are anti American and have been since 1947
Because you assumed we were Pro Britain. If you remember all the way back to the War we were against UK colonization post WW2. Just examine the transcripts of Potsdam and other Roosevelt Vs Churchill meetings. You forget we withheld until they started to get out of Britain and we forced them out of Suez and Egypt.
Nehru showed up in Moscow in 1947. We also went right after Stalins death. The US made its first agreement with Pakistan in 1954 to keep Russia from leasing the port of Karachi.
We advised you against going nuclear so there would not be an arms race with Pakistan. The two nations are emotional and irresponsible with each other. The rest of the world gets your radiation. Its a world not just your border dispute.
Every time we offered India another path its flowery words and right back to Mother Russia. You dont think we hear your leaders conversations with Russia? Gimme Shelter.
No American reading these threads is going to be in favor of losing any soldier if the behavior and attitude continues as it has been. It would never get through Congress.
We dont want your country. In the slightest. Thats nutty.
You made a choice. You conflated the UK and America in all things ( but you are not racist or discriminatory) You said you were neutral. You are not. Sorry we did not buy that. We wish you well. Hope everything works out for you. Many many smart and nice people in India and Indians in the USA.
It is what it is. Its too bad. Three weeks ago I began to read the Indian media outlets as I had hope ( and I told or discussed the potential with many other Americans) and wanted to learn about how your people thought. I was stunned at many threads just like this.
      It is what it is

@@willaimoconnell9430 no one said US wanted to invade India. US shamelessly assisted Pakistan against India and it was RU that came to the rescue. All the Mujahideen funding came back to bite USAs ass and now they realize Pakistan cannot be trusted. India has always acted in interest of its own and its neighbors. Indian investment into Afghanistan has gone into drain thanks to USAs mindless policies in Afghanistan.
Also USA don't have a right to dictate anyone on arms race when they themselves have shit load of nukes more than rest of the nations combined.
