Are John Mayer's pickups just Fender Fat 60s? Are they just "tweaked" Texas Specials?

  • I heard that John Mayer's Big Dipper pickups were re-branded as "Fat 60s" when he left Fender.
To investigate this claim, I reached out to the Stratocaster community to get some information about these pickups.
If the rumor is true, how different are Fat 60s from stock Texas Special pickups? After all, John's Big Dippers were based on an underwound set of Texas Specials...
Stay tuned to hear a comparison between some pickups and find out where my research led me!

I've "tweaked" Texas Specials about 20 years ago, to make them sound less midrangy and more "relaxed". Just took some winding off to bring them to "vintage" specs.
I just checked them and seems the resistance I brought them to is:
    Bridge 6.35Kohm / Mid and Neck 5.85Kohm
    I love how they sound.

Killer vid, man! I remember seeing that SRV Strat in catalogs growing up. I’ve always wanted to play one!

I just stuck some FLEOR Alnico 5 which really sound like Texas Specials for my wife & I didn't think I'd like them but after some playing & listening to mine the note clarity was better & mine sounded muddy especially with chords. They were a bit bright for me but I just rolled the tone off to darken it up. No messing with pedals, eq's, or amps. It's just right at your fingers tips to control the tone.

Great Comparison and lovely playing, I feel that the guitars both were a little out of tune or the Intonation might have been off. 😅 Both Strats look killer!

They are not the same. Alnico V vs Alnico II. I bought a set of Fat 60’s for that reason. I gig with a Tele HH with a set of Semour Duncan Seth Lover. I love the sound of that guitar. Paf Alnico II so when I saw this set I bought it when they first came out in 2021 if I remember correctly.

Big Dippers and Fat 60s sound more mid-scooped than Texas Specials. It’s a matter of taste. Texas Specials are underrate pickups. I bought a Custom Shop ‘61 Strat with a HW Texas Specials set and I was skeptical at first but I had to change my mind. I recently fitted the Kingtone srv switch and I have to say the pairing with the Texas Specials is killer.

I also think the Tx Specials are underrated. They get a lot of undeserved hate. Thanks for watching!

I have a 2022 budget €650,- Strat Player with original pickups and a replaced bridge. To be honest, mine sounds the same - or even better - than these. And I think this is caused by my playstyle and my gear (Boss GT10 connected to Fender Blues deluxe reverb and a '79 Lab L5) So I am not really convinced,

No worries. I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, so I’m glad you have found a tone that you prefer and that works for you. Thanks for watching!

These guitars are so out of tune/poor intonation I had to change the vid the second you started playing. Obviously the SRV was better than the other but Christ man, buy a tuner and do a setup
