    I bought a metallic red Squier Contemporary HH Strat for modding...
    I don't dig humbuggerers on Strats so I was shopping for a good set of vintage voiced single coil pups when I found a set of new Fender Vintage 59's on sale for $92 w/free shipping.
    I browsed TH-cam for a good demo of them and I saw this excellent demonstration.

    I have had both sets on several guitars and like both for different reasons. I have an SRV and have left the Texas Specials on the guitar. The added output and mid range allows a greater range of response: I finger pick many of my leads and also tend to roll back the volume to 8 when playing behind the vocals. I feel that I am able to clean up the Texas Specials but often have to play with more ferocity to get an edgier tone out of the '59s. However, I have used the 59's on my Fender Eric Johnson 2005 Strat and find that the '59s are more of what I could never get out of the 57-62 pickups. They are amazing for the EC Slowhand/ 461 Ocean Blvd sound (Willie and the Hand dive, I Shot the Sheriff, The Core, etc) and D and Ds studio album tones (Bell Bottom Blues) with the EJ Strat. I heartily endorse the The Texas Specials and the '59s for different reasons. Thank you for an excellent comparison video. Great quality on all levels.

    I have American Special Strat with Texas Specials and also American Original 50s Stratocaster with pure vintage '59s set and i'm in love with both of guitars. They both are my favourite guitars. It's awesome you could choose between more vintage sound and feel with american original 50s or maybe want some dirty dirty blues or some rock' n roll craziness with Jumbo frets and texas specials then i have american special strat. Could not be happier. Fender makes fantastic pickups. I see no reason to go super expensive way and buy pickups for a lot of money and hope they'll be "better" sounding. Fender have nailed the right sound already. And we have a lot of options to choose, just like this video shows. Thank you :)

    It depends on what type of music that you play and what you like as far as tone. I play mostly blues and I was dead set on having the vintage wind of the 59's and played them for a while until I realized I really wanted the fuller tone of the ts pup's. I prefer the older sets with the higher wound bridge pickup. If you play country or music that needs a bright glassy sound then the 59's are for you, but if you want more body and punch go for the texas specials. Set them low in your pickguard and adjust until you hit your sweet spot. By the way, that was a fantastic demo.

    I use the 59's professionally on both my strats..they only sound different because of the guitars themselves and component tolerances maybe..this fender pickups are very consistent, they all read the same abou 5.9. Now both guitars are indeed different but close enough I can use each one as a backup of the other. I choose which guitar I play based on how they sound and feel on the soundcheck for that specific gig or venue. Usually I use my old 62reissue MIJ as my main axe, but more because I tend to like rosewood boards more. The other one is a 54reissue also Japanese. I think this PV 59's sound particularly good on maple necks, but sometimes I feel the other way around.
    Pickups are simple tech, and most of the stuff online is just marketing noise pulling us down rabbit holes cause we tend to believe in snake oil talking too much. For vintage sounds there's 50's/early 60's specs, there's late 60's/70's and that's about it. Beyond minimum quality parts, old-school specs and formulas, number of turns and so on, they all sound basically the same- or close enough..
    And my point when using the same electronic components pickups and all, I found out the pickups can sound great on one guitar and wrong on another..so..we have music to do beside chasing our own tails. 😊

    Excellent comparison brother. I don't know for you but for me thé 59's sounded the best. Be safe, be happy and blues on! 👍

    Nice demonstration. The Texas Specials are nice and warm.. The PV 59 more "chimey/trebley" I personally prefer the warmness of the Texas Specials...

    Modern Texas Specials seem a bit disappointing to me. I have a set of TS pickups that I bought 25 years ago and they are absolute ball tearers compared to the newer ones that some of my friends own. I think I might hang on to those puppies for a bit longer! ;-)

      marekbage you’re friends must have them set too low. My set is brand new and they fucking blow your hair back. They’re very touchy with pickup height. If you get it just right, they sound badass.

    Just received an email today from Fender. They will be discontinuing the Vintage 59’ pickups from their site, so grab them while you can. 😕 It’s unfortunate that I guess I’ll never be able to get a set after all. 😒

      If you want the cheaper route you can go with the pure vintage set from dragonfire, 39 bucks for those.

    59's are outstanding. Changed my Player in to vintage Strat. They wake perfect middle and round cut high and low and. Texas Special are similar to stock Player pickups , they have to much high and low , sound much more modern and colder. They are not bad but different , better for lad sound but don;t fit so nice in he rhythom parts.

    Did they have the same pickup height? The 59s were lacking bass, but still sounded good.

    • @AlexImmordino
      @AlexImmordino  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, you can't set them at the same height because one set is more powerful than the other one. Plus, the more underwound the pickups the more I like space, air between strings and pole pieces. It adds articulation and sparkles.

    What height do you put the Texas Specials? I put mine 8/64 high E and 7/64 low e on all three, and they sound like an ice pick. It's not my rig, because the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Pro2 Tele both sound great (Boss Katana Artist MK2), and it does the ice pick thing with- or without any pedals on. I'm about to experiment with different heights, but that's an all-day task and I thought I would just ask a few people first.

      @AlexImmordino  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had that issue too. Lowering them quite a lot helped with the ice pick thing but I didn't like the dynamic of the TS when set very low. My Strat has a swamp ash body and is very bright (even unplugged). The Texas Specials set didn't fit her well. I guess you need to try another set of pickups too.
      Overtime, I found TS pickups to go very well with alder body but not so much with ash.

    It's like chosing between a lean, 175lb running back who bobs and weaves his way through things with poise and grace or the beefy, 275lb linesman who moves quicker than you'd think but moves mountains.
    Really the best is having both. Buy another Strat!
