A look inside a blown 36kV fuse.

  • I'd like to thank Chris for sending this fuse. It was one of three used with a 6 ton resin potted 33kV transformer.
    Sorry for the overzealous audio levels at the start. I didn't realise the forehead mic was going to pick my voice up so well.
    The fuses have spring loaded pins so that if one fails either by overcurrent or thermally, it fires out a spring loaded pin that then trips an isolator. I'm not 100% sure where the auxiliary wire that allows the spring to release is connected to, since most of it had been obliterated in normal operation. I wonder if part of the triggering is done by pressure build up in the fuse when it blows.

    The reason for multiple ribbons is for the current breakage curve, multiple thin ribbons have a faster curve while fewer thicker ribbons for the same rated fuse has a slower curve.
    Thats why this was a "medium" rated fuse, kinda like a Type C vs a Type B MCB, A fast blow fuse would have more thinner elements spiraled. while a slow would have fewer thicker...
    The two ceramic element holders are used so more elements can be fit in a smaller unit, the elements are of the same length and thickness that are used on the inside as the outside.
    The firing mechanism is just a different type of fuse element designed not to rupture until the other elements have blown, But is also run in parallel with them, this element is under tension by the firing spring and once it snaps, it shoots the pin out the cap to trigger the disconnector to prevent a seriously unbalanced delta arrangement of the circuit causing ferroresonance.

    Hi
    I'd love one of those fuses for my collection 😉
    You are right about the centre wire releasing the striker pin, however you might be a bit surprised how if you haven't found out already.
    When the fuse blows the fuse wires do melt and the sand ensures good insulation but the centre wire doesn't melt.
    At the striker pin is a small pot of gun powder and the connected centre wire sets that off. This then forces the striker pin through the end of the fuse against the trip plate which physically disconnects the transformer.

      @Obliteratu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I was thinking, to stop it failing first I imagine it has a higher resistance so that the bulk of the current flows through the main ribbons until they pop. Clive, was there a resistor in there? Can't think how else you'd keep the current off that small wire in non-fault conditions.

    • @brianpeters4486
      @brianpeters4486 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thin wire will have a higher resistance than the fuse wire. No current will flow until a fault. I also assumed the construction allows for different ampacity fuses in one form factor by adjusting the number of coils from 1 to four? Then again it may need all four coils due to the high voltage. Things are "special" at those potentials.

    You are right with the trip mechanism - it has a wire holding it in through the whole fuse. When it blows, the central wire becomes the final conductor and blows releasing the pin. In some fuses this can be done with a small explosive charge that is detonated by the potential difference across the fuse once it blows.

  • @MichaelLeeOne
    @MichaelLeeOne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice video! I am not familiar with this type of fuse so it took a couple of minutes on google to find a pdf file about them. I will ccp a bit of it.
    Striker mechanisms are driven by explosive charges or
    compressed springs. Both are triggered by a thin fuse
    wire running the length of the fuse, usually through the
    centre of the star shaped core. The wire is connected
    in parallel with the elements, so a current flows
    through it when the elements melt. The current
    heats up the wire and detonates the explosive
    charge, or melts the wire andreleases the spring,
    pushing the striker pin out of the fuse link’s end
    cap. A lock washer mechanism makes it impossible
    to push the pin back into the fuse body

    1:09.
    I have seen videos of these being made. It is absolutely amazing to me just how little metal is used inside as a fusible material and still be able to carry the voltage and amperage that goes through those power lines. And they go bang when the fuse blows because when the main circuit is broken the current flows through a minor circuit to a small explosive charge that drives a pin out of one end so that it knocks the connector away and lets the fuse swivel down so that it is easy just by looking to see where and which fuse is blown. Someone really thought that feature through thoroughly and designed it good.

    Hm. Sand-filled fuse… We used to have 750V= fuses on the 50’s class trams we had in Oslo until ≈2000. German "Drei kanalen patrone". Popped open a broken one one day, and indeed, it was like a long flat wire (or band) going in and out of three longtidudional (damn, that’s inspellable…) sand-filled chambers. Longis porcelain things, came in 2, 10, 16 and 25 or 30 amps (Lights, compressor (was 10, got changed to 16), heat (motorcar) and heat/lights/track brakes on trailer. Trailer had its own set of fuses for lights, heat and track brakes (was 24 V battery on motor car, 600 V= on trailer).
    All the fuses on the motor cars were on a board above the head of the driver… :P
    Very cool vid, thanks for sharing! :D

    yeah your last statement is what my general thought is.... outer is designed to trip a little earlier (or same... as its designed to carry the majority the load normally, lower resistance and lower inductance with the wider turns spacing than the inside core, and of course skin-effects) and the release is attached one side to the cap the other to the inside core... the voltage drop of on the release is kept in check due to the outside wrap, but when that wrap goes, the inside picks up the load (momentarily) long enough to trip the release-striker before it too fails open.

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      todkapuz It probably triggers the striker BY failing open, in the most basic of ways: Blown fuse wire not able to hold back that spring.

    Had a spate of very close lightning strikes a few years ago out here in rural colorado where I was calling the boys out with my cell phone due to the fact I could plainly see the transformer fuse had blown and was now dangling in the breeze. Those come apart both ends and they were rebuilding them on the spot with a pulled apart ordinary lamp cord to my amazement. Most other times they have one ready to go and I didn't get to see them rebuilt before.Three times for mine that summer season, and simultaneously one apiece for two other utilities within a 1/4 mile from me. I jest that zee germans will eventually get me dialed in on those 88s.

    This reminds me of a related video by Photonicinduction, where he examines a similar fuse rated at 36 amps at 11,000 volts. It had a similar ceramic core with the same sort of flat strip wire wound round in a spiral, with a single "trigger wire" running right down the middle inside the ceramic core. When the main spiral winding blows, the current is then forced to travel through the central trigger wire, which ignites a tiny pyrotechnic charge in the end-cap to release the spring-loaded rod. Since you've got a fuse which is already blown, that charge would have already gone off, so won't be there any more.

    I was parked beneath an HV line one day watching a small thunder cell drift across the river valley towards me. The lightning struck the line in the distance and a fuse on the pole next to me (a smaller version of your whopper) detonated with a loud bang and a concussion I could actually feel. As intended, the fuse disconnected itself and swung down out of position.
    At the time I was working on a hydro electric site where the largest generator (500KW) exported to the step-up transformer via two 400A fuses on each phase. I understood that two fuses in parallel were used to give a faster response time - one fuse would always blow first, massively overloading the second which instantly vapourised. One single thick fuse element would react more slowly. This was all 1960's technology and was all replaced with a new sub a few years ago.

    Current flows through the indicator wire which is connected to both ends and it snaps which allows the spring to push the pin out.
    Exaccary the same on the square body fuses we use for low voltage protection.
    The Unicorn style mike mounting works a treat, I may steal that suggestion.
    Wear gloves when disassembling fuses, those edges are like glass.

    The trip mechanism is based on an explosive charge connected to an under-rated wire, starting at the trip indicator and pulled through the center of the fuse then soldered at the other end of the fuse in direct contact with the actual silver fusible wire. Once the actual fuse blows, the under rated wire blows and triggers the explosive, activating the tripped indicator.
