Horrific USB power supply fault. (Electrocution risk.)

  • Although I've come across some really dodgy power supplies with poor insulation between the mains and low voltage sides, this is the first one where the USB ports have carried full mains current. (via a rectifier)
    It's a Swees QY08-05010 with this model and style carrying various other branding as well. Oddly it does appear to be relatively sensibly designed inside, but this one has a serious manufacturing fault that suggests others from the same run may also pose a risk of serious electric shock.
    Sadly, this just reinforces my doubts about the poor separation in many of these small transformers. I'd rather have split bobbin transformers even if it meant efficiency taking a slight hit.

    Brilliant analysis. I remember a colleague who designed a transformer for a product I was working on. One day, I saw him carefully unwinding a transformer. I asked what he was up to. "I validated the samples the company sent us, I'm now validating one of the production transformers they sent us to make sure they are to the same standard". Turns out, production samples and production run parts don't always conform to the same specification :) That was 25 years ago, looks like the same holds true now. Shame, because I agree, it looks like they did a good job on the other parts of the build.

      They actually didn't make an effort. "Effort" would include, as part of quality control, checking to see if the whole thing was live. Design, components, and even assembly are not what you mostly pay for when you get a "premium" product, it's quality control. (Of course what you MOSTLY pay for is branding but quality control is a way of protecting the brand name so it gets done.)

    If you ever come with a similar fault in the future you might consider using a razor blade or a scalpel to cut the pcb traces going to the secondary one by one. That way you could identify the exact windings that are short circuit. Only then remove the transformer and you will know where to look, even if the fault disappears. Enjoy your teardowns, excellent work. Cheers.

    That really is too bad. They even used polymer caps on the output, where you pointed out where they are next to the heatsink. They will have a much longer life expectancy in such a situation than electrolytic caps. So, they tried and it isnt a bottom dollar design.It just looks like whatever machine was wrapping that transformer maybe had some protrusion or something?

      +tesla500 - UL, CSA, CE and other safety laboratory markings on Chinese electrical goods are meaningless, especially on no-brand and obscure brand products. Some years ago, while returning a load of malfunctioning 4-foot fluorescent shop lights to my local Home Depot store, I had a chance encounter with a fellow who moonlighted in the electrical department after his main job at Underwriters Laboratories. He told me that it was not uncommon for the Chinese to affix fake hologram "UL" stickers to their goods when they had never submitted such goods to the laboratory for testing in the first place.

    • @lumpyfishgravy
      @lumpyfishgravy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +Milosz Ostrow Sadly true. The Chinese simply copy everything including markings.

    • @krashd
      @krashd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thankfully knockoff factories are no better at copying the relevant markings than they are at copying appliances so a close inspection of the marking can show whether it is fake or not. In the UK the CE mark is the first thing I look for on a device because it will either be crystal clear as though it was finely scribed by a small inkjet printer during the manufacturing process or it will look just like a blurry stamp as though that is exactly what someone did, just stamped the casing by hand after they've assembled it.
      Any professionally made device or appliance will have professionally applied markings and labels.

    also i may add that that adhesive foam on the bottom is BAD ... its not conductive but it will track fairly well, carbonize and short after some time ... especially if any contaminates got under it ... if you have to use one place it on the LV side to prevent tracking or place the adhesive side on the case it self

    Hi, Clive. Great video as always. Must point out out that under safety testing there must be creepage and clearance distances between primary and secondary circuits. I did see holes in the PCB usually to increase creepage distances, however putting a foam sticker over them will cancel the reason for the holes reducing the creepage again. Also if this foam is hygroscopic would fail the flash test after the humidity test.

    • @125brat

      Yes, and normally those components providing the isolation would be 3rd party tested and approved per the requirements of the LVD supported by EN/IEC 60335 or 60950.
      Also the conformance testing of the product after manufacture should have picked up the defect, but then of course CE means China Export to them😡
