Incredible exploding Chinese insect (and human) killer. (with smoke)

- It was just a matter of time before something exploded unintentionally, and here it is. A rather bizarre Chinese "Mosquito killer" that uses blue LEDs to attract the very rare species of mosquito that might actually be attracted to blue light (none) and zaps it with a 1.3kV electrified grid powered by the most shonky voltage multiplier I've ever seen. I mean, completely random capacitors like some bizarre high voltage pic 'n' mix of misfortune.
So apart from giving me quite a zap when I innocently poked the grid on the unplugged unit with my test-finger (no trickle discharge at all) the unit went one better, and while I was randomly shorting the live (and directly referenced to the mains) grid with a screwdriver, it made a loud pop and smoke started coming out of it.
I then decided to film it smouldering seductively and it blew up completely. The iPad seems to have missed the magnitude of the actual flash and explosion to a degree. It was awesome.
I might actually buy another of these to see it blow up again.

CE marking is an administrative marking that indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area.

Interesting Garden variety of coloured Caps in there. Your commentary is usually awesome. keep up the great work. The magic smoke release was epic ! The Caps and diodes should all be the same voltage and capacitance ratings. I know that the Chinese 1N4007 diodes from ebay are a lot smaller then the genuine 1N4007 diodes made in USA.
I love those instructions on imported stuff, as well as the promises of life changing properties. I bought some breadboard that promised "much joy and happy life" .... now you don't get that with Western breadboard! :-)

The capacitors are different because it has to convert to metric voltage first before it raises the voltage. :p

Never really thought about this until now but you could be right... even so it could also be that they just picked some random capacitors from a bucket or drawer and used those! Like a mystery roulette game...
Having said that, I could have easily bought one of these from my local garage sale a few days ago. I really should have got it, shouldn't I? :p
I pulled apart some CFLs recently to get at the little ferrite cores within and liberated the other components at the same time. Having seen this video now I think there's everything you need in said CFL to make one of these shoddy things including the diodes and random capacitors.

the reason for the different capacitors is because the closer you get to the output terminals the higher the voltage rating of capacitor is needed.

I found it quite interesting that at 4:18 when the cap went pop the pulse affected the camera!
Would that have been caused via the back feed through the power supply (mains I presume) or via some sort of mini emp ?
+Wolfy Wolf It may have oversaturated the camera's light sensor causing a line to appear.

+Wolfy Wolf In fact, it's more likely to be how the flash of light from the pop looks when captured on a camera with a rolling shutter. The flash happens when the sensor is scanning the top of the frame, but is gone by the time the sensor's scan has reached 1/5 through, and so only a small portion of the image is lit up.
I think its because the camera has a rolling shutter. That means the flash was so quick, that the camera only caught it on the top part of a single frame. But i might be completely wrong.

Sometimes, out of frustration, I do just that. Device keeps blowing fuses? Replace the fuse with aluminum and find out what blows out in smoke. There’s your fault.

If you want to discharge small capacitors like this then a stainless steel pan scrubber with plastic handle can work wonders.
For shorting capacitors out i do always use a sponge which is only wet on the downside. Easy and fast contact to all solder points. Doesn't even need saltwater, just tap water is sufficient.
Tap water is salt water, eg. it has lots of ions in it. Purest water can be found at powerplants in the steamy part that goes trough the turbine to turn the generators. But even that is not true pure water. There's two physical/chemical effects working there: 1st any impurities in the water will form glass deposits on the turbine blades deforming them and causing all kind of havoc. 2nd pure water is acidic, because autocatalyst in water produces OH- and H+ ions and H+ ions being light are more active than the OH- ions. This corrodes the turbine blades and causes all kind of havoc. So it's a lose-lose situation.

Those instructions on the back are probably more lethal than the product itself, I gave myself a stroke trying to read them.

They probably bought capacitors from several factories that had failed quality control. Factories usually sell off failed electrical products so that they can be recycled, since they often have valuable metals inside. However, the ones that work somewhat are resold and only one that are completely dead are recycled.

You'll notice that costs were cut when safety came under consideration. It's their way. I'm surprised the wire grid wasn't connected directly across the mains.

I have tried purchase this thing maybe a 2 years ago.
We had inside only PCB for LEDs and metal plates was just directly connected to the 230Volt mains.
I destructed it immidiately and put to the e-waste container.
Oh, and I found a decorative packaging of electric bath duck (yes, the rubber ducky) which said "Instructions: 1. Plug the duck in. 2. Put it in the bathtub. 3. Please make sure you made the right decision."
It had live contacts below the duck and had mains plug coming out of it.
Maybe it's the more elegant version of taking the favorite toaster to bath.
That sounds like a suicide duck, and step three is advising you to stop and think for a moment if you really want to go through with it.

In the USA in the Pacific NorthWest, we have the rare mosquito. I have a US version that uses a tube instead of LED's. Started years ago using one when tent camping to clear out the tent by running one with an inverter for about 10 minutes to completely clear the tent for the night. Still have the unit in the motorhome for the same use. I would like to find a US version with LED's instead of the tube.

Maybe made for American 110vac supply.as the discharge capacitors should be rated at double the ~300Vdc supply peak plus about 33%. So 800Vdc or 1kV more readily available. The first cap before the diode at 400V rating, is OK.

The zapper in our kitchen is I think 20 volts, and that's more than enough to down the vast majority of insects (maybe even all) and humans touching them is ill-advised. This seems overkill.
Totally expected an exploding Chinese insect. Would have been a bit out of character but not too far given the variety of items that have been addressed (and chemical rxns are electrical too).
We only see his desk... not the fire station right behind him ready to extinguish him, his desk, the room, the rest of the building if need be.
