    The Blacksmith's Shop is just too big for its own good.

      As a standalone set I think it's great but next to the others it does seem out of scale.

      @@phillipbooth5158 It is a beautiful standalone set, but the roof tiles are dreadful and the upstairs looks a little fancy for a blacksmith. I think they could have made it a little smaller and cheaper and made it scale better with other minifig buildings and castles. It's just a little too ambitious for its own good.

      @@magnuslauglo5356 To each their own. I really like everything about this set, including the blue tiles. The Blacksmith set came in early 2021, well before the Lion Knights Castle (and Medieval Town Square) had been designed. The Lion Knights Castle was the result of a fan vote LEGO held to see what theme fans would want as a part of their 90th anniversary in 2022. I think scaling will be considered more now that the Castle theme seems to have made a strong return.

      @@phillipbooth5158 that's a good point re the fact that the Blacksmith's shop came out first. I almost wonder if the best way to display it with the more recent sets is to display the second floor and the roof floor separately as noe building and build a separate roof for the basement. It all depends on how much you want to mod existing sets.

    Use a little forced perspective-
    Elevate the castle by placing it on a platform a couple inches tall, then place the other sets in the foreground, in front of the castle, coming towards the onlooker-
    The blacksmith shop should be closest to the viewer, the castle in the distance and higher, the market can go in the center, split up to create a sort of road to the castle with the market buildings on both sides, magistos workshop and forest hideout can go further out to the left and or right, behind the market buildings

    I like to think of the Lion knights castle as more of a keep than a full castle… in that respect, you could imagine the village and blacksmith outside of the keep, and all of them surrounded by an outer wall

    As someone who mostly builds mocs based off sets, I find myself seeing that almost every set is made to be bought twice. In my eyes at least lol then everything can be smoothed out and made to fit from there in your own way

      This is one reason I like the modular buildings so much, because they feel like a complete thing(to me, at least). Like they're full buildings that are closed off around all sides and don't have huge gaping holes in the outer walls

    I have the 3in1 castle. Plus lots of 80s castle stuff. I've made transition walls, 8 studs long with two different connectors and a bending part each. One side will connect at the top like the 3in1 does, while the opposite side will connect at the bottom with the classic sets. To help with geometry, both connecting walls are able to bend.

  • @wesandell

    An "easy" solution to make the castle look "bigger" is to get a bunch of burps and make a platform to elevate the castle up above the rest of the buildings. Of course, that costs money for both the burps, the plates, supporting bricks underneath a large elevated base, along with the necessary pieces for a ramp up to the top.

    Why dont you have the 3-1 medieval castle there? It scales well with the everything beside the blacksmilth. Everyone seems to forget about the 3-1 castle. The castle that is literally like the old school castles, being modular.

    Thanks very much for uploading this comparative video of the new LEGO Medieval Town Square to the Medieval Blacksmith and the Lion Knights' Castle. I was concerned mainly with how big the new Medieval Town Square was but many of the other review videos kept comparing it to the Lion Knights' Castle which I did not have. Now, I realize that the Medieval Town Square appears to be somewhat small to fit nicely with my LEGO modular buildings.

    You can (and should) raise the castle. That may compensate for the scale discrepancy.
    Castles were usually built on an elevation so they’d have a 360 view over their territories

    My set up is far from complete but to make the scale and design of things feel right I have a certain set up. Castle is the centerpiece at the center and back. Town is a little ways down from the castle with both buildings facing each other with the castle in the middle off in the distance and the little tree next to the inn. Medieval Blacksmith is a ways away in the "Black Forest" as a midway point between the Forestmen Hideout and the town. Majisto's Magical Workshop is deep in the woods so he could practice his magic in peace.

  • @MrPolleyr
    @MrPolleyr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I had bought 2 sets of the 31120 castle when they came out. I made a raised platform using rock elements and plates which elevated the castle about 6 bricks above the table. I added a lot of my own stock of bricks and other castle pieces and made a massive castle that is about a 48 x 48 baseplate in area. It makes a massive statement and makes the other Medieval buildings look much more to scale. Perhaps raising the Lion Knoghts Castle would benefit from a similar raised design?

    Thanks for this video. I was on the fence on whether to spend $900+ (if you include the Viking Village) and seeing them side by side and the scale differences has helped me a lot. Being as OCD as I am, its probably a pass for me. They definitely look great as individual sets, but if i bought everything that looked great, I’d be broke!

    I really hope Lego continues to drip out more Castle sets (maybe one every six or twelve months or so). Some sort of keep for the Black Falcons (though the Bricklink exclusive set largely fills this role), more Wolfpack (I would love a remake of the Wolfpack Tower), and maybe even some Dragon Knights or Black Knights (one of the letters in the Town Square is from one of them). I do like the GWP sets for Castle, but I would much rather we got more robust sets.

      Yeah, even though the Bricklink Mountain Fortress is nice, it seems too exclusive too be "the" Black Falcon set for Lego. Technically we also have the 3-in-1 Creator Castle for them too, but that seems a bit unpolished to be part of the main series.

    I agree completely with a previous comment, I absolutely love the BS Shop, it’s one of my favourite buildings, but its was to large to add in a Medieval village. Why does Lego not think about scale when building themes?

    • @jacobelmslie3862
      @jacobelmslie3862 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I suspect since this was an Ideas submission was not part of the plan, or the main castle theme was brought in afterwards (blacksmith being a test market test) but had to scale everything else down to make a reasonable castle. Everything else should follow the same scale now, unless they want to make a UCS 1000$ castle...

  • @JRodonBricks
    @JRodonBricks 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Clearly the Blacksmith Shop was not planned to be integrated with any other Castle themed set, probably because it was released earlier, and any castle done at that scale would be too massive.
    Regarding the comparison with the town square, I think maybe we need to stop thinking about the Lion knight's Castle as a massive fortress, and more like a small fortification :D
    The way I see them look good together on a display is playing with perspective, placing the Castle in the top of a hill, more to the back, and the town square below and more to the front. I believe that would work the best.
    Anyway, great video, very well thought off!

    I think te market square lacks the closed buildings. I am not fond of the open backsides. To repair it, maybe buy 2 copies of it and make 5 of 6 stand alone buildings to company the Blacksmith. The blacksmith should be scales down a bit. Maybe make 2 buildings from it. And in addition i recommand the house from the 3 in 1 pirateship as an extra pub or maybe the inn. But for now i wait for a better moment to buy the market square. I am not sure of i would buy the caslte. It looks great. But i own already some old ones. So it is more like lacking funds and prioritying what i like more.

    The comparison of the battlements to town buildings seems small but it's not far from historical realism. Most castles were not enormous. Key is to build up the terrain higher and site it far enough away from civilian life.

      I think the medieval town square looks amazing and the colors are absolutely perfect. The style is very similar to the Lion Knights castle and I think they work great together. Also 3 in 1 means there are 3 different builds using the same parts. So you can't build all 3 at the same time unless you purchased 3 sets. So it doesn't work for the 3 in 1 line
