Hestia’s “power” was very fitting: I don’t know if you knew that but she’s actually one of the original twelve Olympians in Greek mythology (she then “abdicated”, relinquished her place to Dionysus, and then people kinda “forgot” about her) and she was one of the most respected gods in all of the pantheon: Zeus was actually her brother and Hestia was one of the very few people he had an high consideration of (and we know from mythology that Zeus wasn’t exactly known for being respectful and considerate of others)😂 Being Italian I’ll use an Italian expression to describe why this “depiction” of Hestia was extremely fitting: in Italian she’s known as “Dea del Focolare” which roughly translates to “Goddess of the Fireplace” “Focolare” then became a world that indicated not just the fireplace but all the people gathering around it; this world actually became a synonym (and it’s still used today to indicate) of “House” or “Family” So, by praying to Hestia, “the goddess of the fireplace” you were essentially asking her to keep your house, your family, your loved ones safe… In conclusion “fire” and “protection” are two recurring themes whenever it comes to Hestia Hope you all liked this little mythological/linguistic lesson😉
I’ll tell you more: to the Romans Hestia’s name changed (they essentially “copied” Greek divinities, changing their name and sometimes a few attributes) and she became “Vesta” Here’s why Bell’s technique was named “Argo Vesta” that if wrote “Argo Vestae” would literally translate from Latin to “Vesta’s (Hestia’s) Argonaut” And also here “Dios Aedes Vesta” “Aedes” being a synonym for “sepulcher” but originally meaning simply “temple” or “Home” (They were so close to perfection but then they HAD to butcher it with “Dios” instead of “Deus”= “God”, making it half Spanish)😒😂 Moreover in Rome Vesta was such an important figure that she even had her own “priestesses”; they were know as: “Vergini Vestali”, literally “Vesta’s (Hestia’s) Virgins” They were without a doubt the most important priestesses in Roman history and also the most important and influential women in Roman’s society: they were 3/4 (then they became 6) randomly drawn from a pool of 20/30 candidates (little girls of noble families who were about 10 years old) Their “service” lasted for 20/30 years and after they were free to live however they liked… They all had to undergo quite a rigid training, but in Roman society that was EXTREMELY patriarchal they surely were the most free women and had special rights and privileges reserved exclusively for them: they were the only women who could make a will, when they didn’t have to attend their duties in the temple they were free to go out, and when they walked in the streets everyone, including senators and high “magistrates” (in Latin= high ranking government officials) had to step aside and let them through… They could “bestow their grace” to people who were sentenced to death (like a “presidential pardon”) and many other things They only had two obligation: 1) Remain virgins 2) NEVER let Vesta’s (Hestia) fire in the temple extinguish, for WHATEVER reason But even if they “transgressed” these 2 rules and were sentenced to death, they were “special” even in death, because being sacred to Vesta they basically couldn’t be touched (let alone murdered) by human hands, so instead of executing them, they were left to starve to death because “no human being could dare to bring death upon them” I know, the last one is quite creepy😅 But I just wanted to show how much of an importance Hestia had in the ancient world
Too bad Hestia would never starve herself, because she's primed to break that first obligation with Bell. 🤣 Well, not that she's actually a goddess OF virginity anyway, as her vow to remain a virgin was just a way to protect her from the advances of Apollo and Poseidon. The stipulation was to tend the Flame of Heaven if I recall, and by coming to the Lower World in Danmachi she is no longer bound to that pledge she had with Zeus. Bit of a non sequitur, but in the Danmachi universe Prometheus stole the flame and descended with it to the mortal plane to try to save humanity from monsters. Currently Prometheus is tending to that flame. There was a full storyline in a game with Hestia being forced to calm it and return to the heavens with it, but that is non-canon. Parts of it weren't non-canon though, like Prometheus being on the mortal plane tending it, it's just that the flame isn't corrupted in the main timeline. Either way, Bell is Hestia's first love and she's willing to throw it all away for him. Good thing he didn't reciprocate her feelings though, or else she might not have been able to defy Freya's charm. That said, if memory serves women were still considered pure in a sense in Ancient Greece if they married and spent their lives with one man. So maybe her more incidental abilities would still exist.
This is one of those moments where I feel a bit of a slow burn is so worth it. After several episodes of Bell basically going through it we're given Serious Hestia™ with an amazing score to go with it leading up to the introduction of the War Game. Just an overall really satisfying experience.
Ngl, worth the wait. Couldn't wait for this reaction, this episode was so hype! Non spoiler context: In the novels, one detail/theme that was unfortunately left out in the anime is in the Dios Aedes Vesta scene, Hestia was described as wholly inhumane, unhuman. Asfi felt like she wasn't seeing the usual silly goddess, but a cold virgin goddess with all her divine splendor on display, and the entire narration gave chills in a different way than the anime (which admittedly still adapted this scene very well). And to clarify on the Syr/Freya/Horn business, at that moment after Horn stabbed herself and used her magic, it was essentially Freya's words/thoughts coming out of Horn's mouth in the form of Syr. Basically Horn is worst person to "betray" Freya because she can literally know exactly what she's thinking.
Yeah I definitely got the Horn speaking Freya thoughts but that’s crazy how different Hestia felt. There was definitely a different air to her in the anime, much more serious, but to the degree she didn’t even seem like herself. I definitely didn’t feel the “inhumane, unhuman.” Part. But overall it was still a fantastic scene minus the subtitle confusion
Freya can't charm bell due to his unique skill Liaris Freese, the side effect it makes the user immune to charms. In fact, Freya tried to break the skill by break Bell's mind
YESSSS!!! FINALLY TIME FOR SOME OLD SWEET REVENGE!!!😍 I told you guys, I don’t remember if it was 3/4 episodes ago but I wrote a comment in which I said that, for me, Horn wasn’t done yet, because I felt like she still had a part to play, maybe even a crucial one… And it turns out that I was right, apparently She was essential in helping Bell FINALLY connecting all the dots together… And I’m not gonna lie, that scene was heartbreaking, you could see how much she was suffering deep inside and how much she was affected by Freya’s feelings (I feel like at this point she wouldn’t be able to kill Bell even if she tried, as we saw…) (When Ryu was taken prisoner I had a strange feeling that Horn would have been the one who would have helped her evade) When Bell was like: “I wonder who this intruder might be…”🤔 I was like :”My dear, realistically it could only be Ryu/Asfi or maybe Ais… But the little green magic sparkles really should make you lean towards the first one…”😂 Not gonna lie, Hestia scene was TRULY BADASS, I literally jumped from my seat😂, one of the most cool and badass scenes I’ve seen in anime recently, I loved it😍❤️ (A bit of justice for Hestia too, because I feel like she gets “mistreated” too much and too often, so I’m really glad that she got her “time to shine”… LITERALLY😅😍) Ending with a banger! It’s TIME FOR THE WARGAME GUYS!!! I’M GOING TO GRAB SOME POPCORN!!! I can’t wait for what comes next!!! I’m super excited!!!😍 Question for you: will the war game take place like the day after or will a few weeks pass by? (I’m talking about the story time, obviously) P.S. Nice to see how everyone immediately regained their senses and the first thing they thought about was on how to get revenge on the Freya Familia😂 Poor girls of the Hestia Familia… They all must be truly heartbroken… You could literally see the sadness on Lili’s face, the shame on Haruhime’s and Mikoto frustration… Guess that when all of this is over all three of them will be kneeling in front of Bell begging for forgiveness for days…💔😂 (Knowing Mikoto she would properly be more than happy to commit seppuku to “atone for her sins…”)😂
This payoff is so epic. I still can’t believe Bell, a quintessential dense main character of a harem anime, actually forced a girl into admitting her feelings for him. That was almost as impressive as Hestia recreating her heavenly temple! But yeah, now it all makes sense. Freya denounces Syr because Syr is her genuine romantic attraction to Bell. She’s literally a girl who’s awestruck by her first love, a regular girl and she does not want to accept it. This is gonna be one hell of a War Game. I think we can assume Ryu and Mia and the other girls from the pub will be allying with Hestia Familia. I have to wonder if their other allies will join. Loki Familia would be a HUGE boon (though they’ll probably be limited to a few representatives). Mythology notes: Hestia is the goddess of the hearth, which signifies the concept of “family” and “home”. I might have mentioned this before but in a way, Hestia embodies a form of love that supersedes the “lustful” love that Freya governs. This is why Hestia was able to resist Freya’s charm in an earlier episode. So basically what Hestia did here is to give herself the field advantage. By recreating her temple, she was able to boost her usually suppressed ability and apply her immunity to charm to everyone in Orario.
Episode 1 to 4 covered part of novel 15 and novel 16 , episode 5 to 9 covered novel 17 an episode 10 and above will cover novel 18 possible a part of 19.
Hestia the virgin goddess of hearth home family and cities the goddess who takes a portion of all sacrifices given to the fire This setup was basically the perfect situation for her flames buring within family homes and hearths all over a city
17:38 well it can be both a blessing and a curse😅 for anyone informed of Freya and her stories the twist that she was Syr the whole time is pretty much non-existent. There are definitely times in the story where I wish I didnt know so much but man I love those times where Omori sensei includes references to the mythologies.
@DTSJ1990 No, Hestia is the Goddess of Home, Hearth, and Family. Family includes wives and husbands, so by default she cannot be the Goddess of Chastity. That title belongs to Artemis. If you look up why Hestia is a virgin in Greek Mythology you'll see it has nothing to do with her purview as a goddess. Purity is also a massively different thing in Ancient Greek culture, as a woman who is married to one man for her entire life is not considered impure despite losing her virginity to him. One of the major facets of a wedding in Ancient Greece is actually the bride making a sacrifice to Artemis in return to losing her virginity. Basically here is the distinction: Hestia is a virgin goddess (of which there are a few in the Greek Pantheon), not a goddess of virginity. Does her virginity make it so Freya's charm cannot effect her? Sure; she's only kept it for billions of years, but her reason for keeping it was in exchange for tending the Flame of Heaven, something she does not do anymore in this setting... She won't be powerless if she loses it to Bell or anything (which she more than likely would allow because she does love him, not that the feeling is reciprocated, but she would), but... It probably would be similar to if Freya had broken Liaris Freese; it would make her vulnerable. Maybe lose her flame's ability to purify, but since we don't know if Omori is taking into consideration the Greek thought process of married faithful women still being pure we don't know if she would in fact lose that. He probably is though; he's surprised me on many occasions with how thorough his research into culture and myth is.
This season isn't as good as season 4 YET, but it's literally only getting better with every episode
Yes
Hestia’s “power” was very fitting: I don’t know if you knew that but she’s actually one of the original twelve Olympians in Greek mythology (she then “abdicated”, relinquished her place to Dionysus, and then people kinda “forgot” about her) and she was one of the most respected gods in all of the pantheon: Zeus was actually her brother and Hestia was one of the very few people he had an high consideration of (and we know from mythology that Zeus wasn’t exactly known for being respectful and considerate of others)😂
Being Italian I’ll use an Italian expression to describe why this “depiction” of Hestia was extremely fitting: in Italian she’s known as “Dea del Focolare” which roughly translates to “Goddess of the Fireplace”
“Focolare” then became a world that indicated not just the fireplace but all the people gathering around it; this world actually became a synonym (and it’s still used today to indicate) of “House” or “Family”
So, by praying to Hestia, “the goddess of the fireplace” you were essentially asking her to keep your house, your family, your loved ones safe…
In conclusion “fire” and “protection” are two recurring themes whenever it comes to Hestia
Hope you all liked this little mythological/linguistic lesson😉
I’ll tell you more: to the Romans Hestia’s name changed (they essentially “copied” Greek divinities, changing their name and sometimes a few attributes) and she became “Vesta”
Here’s why Bell’s technique was named “Argo Vesta” that if wrote “Argo Vestae” would literally translate from Latin to “Vesta’s (Hestia’s) Argonaut”
And also here “Dios Aedes Vesta”
“Aedes” being a synonym for “sepulcher” but originally meaning simply “temple” or “Home”
(They were so close to perfection but then they HAD to butcher it with “Dios” instead of “Deus”= “God”, making it half Spanish)😒😂
Moreover in Rome Vesta was such an important figure that she even had her own “priestesses”; they were know as: “Vergini Vestali”, literally “Vesta’s (Hestia’s) Virgins”
They were without a doubt the most important priestesses in Roman history and also the most important and influential women in Roman’s society: they were 3/4 (then they became 6) randomly drawn from a pool of 20/30 candidates (little girls of noble families who were about 10 years old)
Their “service” lasted for 20/30 years and after they were free to live however they liked…
They all had to undergo quite a rigid training, but in Roman society that was EXTREMELY patriarchal they surely were the most free women and had special rights and privileges reserved exclusively for them: they were the only women who could make a will, when they didn’t have to attend their duties in the temple they were free to go out, and when they walked in the streets everyone, including senators and high “magistrates” (in Latin= high ranking government officials) had to step aside and let them through…
They could “bestow their grace” to people who were sentenced to death (like a “presidential pardon”) and many other things
They only had two obligation:
1) Remain virgins
2) NEVER let Vesta’s (Hestia) fire in the temple extinguish, for WHATEVER reason
But even if they “transgressed” these 2 rules and were sentenced to death, they were “special” even in death, because being sacred to Vesta they basically couldn’t be touched (let alone murdered) by human hands, so instead of executing them, they were left to starve to death because “no human being could dare to bring death upon them”
I know, the last one is quite creepy😅

@@Knight4869-l9yAlso in the early episodes/season, Hestia talked about Vesta being her other name and something else i forgot what she said
@@Knight4869-l9y Blame the subtitle script writer for the Dios/Deus mixup, because it's definitely Deus as spoken.

Yeah, the subs were definitely wrong. It wasn't chastity she said in the novel, it was purity. Bad translation on Hi-Dive's part.
Even if it was a mistranslation, she still is, in fact, the goddess of chastity lol
