Secret Santa surprise for family who lost everything, even son's accordion, when home was destroyed

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
Valera and Galina are the parents of three kids between 9-16. They recently came to the United States from Ukraine.
They had a home, which is very rare in Ukraine (most people live in apartments), but it was destroyed by a Russian tank.
Valera was a construction worker and Galina was a nurse. They’ve had many friends, family members, and close associates killed as they are from Bucha, where a large-scale massacre of Ukrainian civilians occurred. Bucha is just outside of Kiev and was the site of some of the fiercest fighting since the Russians invaded.
When the Russians left, hundreds if not thousands of dead Ukrainian citizens were found in the area. There were signs of torture, abuse, and other unspeakable events. This is what they left behind.
Valera and Galina lost everything and ended up in Idaho Falls where Valera works in construction and Galina worked in a potato cellar. The kids are in school and all of them are adjusting to their life.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Valera and Galina a visit - and we brought a special guest with an accordion for their 9-year-old son. Check out the unforgettable surprise in the video player above.

We take our peace for granted in the U.S. Mom was grateful to not have rockets going off and her children are safe. Please do an update with this family in the next year.
Yes! As a mom and gramma, that part made me cry!
Then please support all efforts to get gun controls passed into law. Recently Republicans voted down a bill to get a ban on rockets launchers for ordinary civilian use. How is this possible for a civilised country? This is a slippery slope and could end up destroying the peace you take for granted.

@Maisiewuppp our country is not attacked BECAUSE our enemies know there is a gun behind each blade of grass. Weapons in the hands of law abiding citizens help protect and preserve the peace. If you take the weapons from the people, as was done by the Nazi's and even today, North Korean's, you will live under an oppressive dictatorship and have no voice. A gun never killed anyone by itself, there was always someone who wrongfully or rightfully pulled the trigger. If you say prayers, thank our police officers, our US military servicemen and women, and our law-abiding citizens for your safety today. Oftentimes just the presence of a lawfully carried weapon by a law abiding citizen is enough to prevent a crime from occurring or someone from becoming tragically injured.

It's a miracle in itself that in this tiny town in Idaho, they found someone who spoke Ukrainian. God truly had a hand in this blessing.

What a touching secret Santa this was. The mother was so grateful she had to wipe away tears. So impressed with the former missionary who still speaks the language so fantastic and was able to interpret.

Wonderful help…we have 1,1 Million refugees from the ukraine in Germany, and they are all financially taking care of and receive free socialized medical care
Like others this one really touched me! One them wanting to give food reminded of my own ethnic roots. The young man who nominated them to realize they might need help and why we need to support Ukraine and be Thankful for our democracy and awake and mindful to keep it!

This is by far the BEST and Most HUMBLING reaction from a family who lost everything in a WAR and still willing to SHARE what little they have. Usually there are a few tears. This one has me sobbing. What a blessing the missionary recognized their speaking. What a blessing for all of us! THANK YOU SANTA! I think Nate’s family has made some new friends.
There are no accidents when God is involved....this was meant to happen.
It has me sobbing as well. I am Polish, I live in peaceful Sweden, and I speak Russian, so it was extra interesting. The former missionary did well.
What I love is the fact that this family is so grateful to be in America. And they wanted to share what little they had. Some of us could learn a few things from this family.

Here in the United States we are so fortunate for everything we have. People need to realize how lucky we are to live here. There are hundreds of millions of people that are fighting for their lives and struggling every day. Be great full for what you have.
When she says that she likes that there's no rockets flying overhead. It really gets you to thinking, very few of us here know what that's like. And we have not witnessed it here in over half a century at least. We talk about "white privilege" but let's be honest here. We have American privilege! This one brought back a flood of memories from my youth. Visiting family and friends in many European counties and how generous the people there are. You never visit without being offered tea and pastries. I loved this family. I hope this new adopted country and especially Idaho, brings them happiness and peace. I think they will thrive here. I am writing this comment from Canada. We have neighbors who came from the Ukraine years ago and they have taken in a refugee family. They now live in a basement with their 2 boys and themselves. I am so happy secret Santa could help this beautiful family.

This is my favorite one of the season so far! They are adorable, genuine and so animated! I’m happy they made it to America and Idaho.
I'm so sorry that they lost all that they had in Ukraine but thank God they all survived and were brought to a safe place. As the mom talked about not having rockets flying over them, it ought to make each one of thankful for the peace that we have in this country. I don't know what their plans are for the future but I'm thankful that Secret Santa helped them meet some of their needs for now.
My grandparents came to United States (North Dakota )in the 1920s from Ukraine. They struggled hard to get here and start a new life. It warms my heart to see the charity given to the family from Ukraine. May God bless them!

It’s amazing how this couple happened to meet someone from Osgood, Idaho who helped them come over then just so happened that this special young man who spoke some of their language ran into them and understood them and now was able to help them, some things are just meant to be! Imagine losing every material thing you own, due to a fire, tornado, or some other catastrophe. Add to that, the loss of your friends, relatives, and your coworkers you’ve come to know over time. Then, top this off by having to move to another country where you do not speak or understand the language! I cannot imagine all of the emotions (fear, sadness, stress, etc.) these people have had to endure. This Secret Santa surprise was one of the very best ever presented by East Idaho News! Your Secret Santa advisor who nominated these people is a very special person. That this small apartment is such a huge safety zone for them makes my holidays that they feel safe. The Irish relatives always put in their emails/letters/communications TG here and there throughout the correspondense. Such as "he healed quickly..TG". It means Thank God. TG for Owen in this family's life, it has brought financial comfort beyond no bombs.

May God Bless this family. Thank you Secret Santa for giving them these gifts. My paternal and maternal grandparents immigrated from Ukraine to Canada in the early 1900's. I was blessed to have grown up in Canada where there were no wars. Now living in the US it is still a reatively safe place to live. I am proud of my Ukrainian heritage and am so happy to see this family is safe here now. I had to laugh when they offered food to their guests - before they left - not because it's funny but because it's so heartwarming. We used to go visit my dad's aunt and we'd be inside the door barely 5 minutes and she's fillng the table with food and sweets! You never leave a Ukrainian home hungry!
What a great way to start gift giving with a song and the accordian and the couple are amazing, not many people invite you in but they welcomed you do warmly. I don't think they even knew about Secret Santa. Love this one so much.

Oh my goodness..in my humble opinion THIS is the best secret santa this year..it meant soooo much to them.. they were stunned but so respectful.. I'm glad the translator explained that its a show of respect to accept the gift of food..just wonderful..what a deserving family..l sincerely hope they flourish and are happy in Idaho and that any family left in Ukraine are safe..
