I was born and still live in Worcester now, I am 13 so obviously I have never seen the old Worcester before, but reading these comments makes me sad
This got harder and harder to watch as the video went on watching more and more history being flattened 😭
worcester looks like the place to be! I remember when I was a young lass and cameras had just come into fashion. Now look at all the marvellous things they can do with them!
i live inworcester. i miss the old downtown so much.
Me too
I’ve lived all over the uk but will always love Worcester lived there for 6 years back in the 90,s still visit tho when I can
Excellent viewing thank you.
THANK you for making this montage . Very pleasing to see contrast shots of what Worcester had and literally threw AWAY?
Although Worcester has changed so much I still like to visit every couple of years. I lived there from 1965-69 in the flat over what is now the left hand side of Superdrug. It was Stead and Simpsons then and my husband was manager. My youngest son was born in the top floor bedroom so I always feel a connection with this city.
If Worcester hadn't of been the subject of such a botched re-development it could of been the York of the Midlands. unfortunately the council destroyed entire medieval streets. What remains only does so despite the councils best efforts. The re-development was designed to model Worcester on post war Coventry.
I lived in Kempsey from 1949-52 before moving to St. Johns and going to Christopher Whiiteheads. I loved the old pictures , so many have happy memories attached. I spent hours shopping in High St, and loved the Cathedral too where I sang in the 3 Choirs Festival. I have warm and happy memories of Worcester and visit every time I come to England. I agree totally with Matts comments below.. the "then" council, if any are still left, should hang their heads in shame. I've been a resident of the faithful city all my life and am a proud Old Vigornian!
I live in Worcester with my husband. It is a lovely place.....but so sad that so much of its culture and history were destroyed.....all those lovely old buildings gone forever.
I'll go back to sleep! Wasn't paying close attention! I'm saying to myself that none of these places look familiar. Just realized this is Worcester in the UK. I just happen to be from Worcester, MA in the USA. Well it was nice to see pictures of the city MY Worcester is named after.
Very interesting. I remember quite a bit of the 'Old Worcester'. Nice to see it again.
This is the town I was born in
Hi!
me to
and me 1953.
City*
Same here. Born 1960 never left.
I’m glad Elgar isn’t looking in the opposite direction - he’d be horrified.
The planners of the 60s and 70s definitely had a taste-bypass. Total vandals.
We are 133. Well edited and thought through. 🌈🙏👍
The politicians running local councils in the sixties and seventies must have been insane.
i lived there 1985 to 1990. Happy memories
Worcester is one of the worst examples of the mediocrity of petty councillors and their truly pathetic visions of 'the future' - that is, a future that rode roughshod and destroyed our cultural heritage before our eyes.
Fascinating but incredibly sad....especially the one at 5:32....what the hell were the planners thinking of, demolishing all those historical and beautiful buildings and churches?
Over the last few years lots have changed in Worcester. Worcester porcelain and many shops have closed,
Most interesting.
wow its changed loads. i havent lived there for 5 years. some of the new pictures look different from when i moved in 2009
Better then, than now economy was better it was more alive . Worcester will never be this great again
The destruction of St Peter’s st at 5:32 was criminal.
Different times
By the way great video👍👍
Why did the 7-11 downtown close?
Seems old enough footage now to create another Video LOL
2011 Then
2018 Now
I live in malvern! Whoooo (not)
The hills are nice
Malvern is beautiful. You're lucky to live there.
Does anyone know the name of the two churches that were pictured but no longer exist, why and when they disappeared. Visited recently and much has remained with the exception of the above as mentioned and the building that is now an ugly eyesore of a Co-op?
St Nicholas church on The Cross is now a restaurant. The Methodist church in Pump Street now within the Lich Gate era development. St Michael church opposite Cathedral adjacent to the Lichgate, demolished, little used. St Peter in King Street little used, demolished 1975. Most population had moved from city centre which had nine parishes in the medieval city area.
Brian3989 . Wow, thank you for the information. Sad.
Brian3989 . What's the tower that stands on the green near the cathedral and river? It had a plaque but the gate was locked and couldn't read with my eyesight?
The medieval church of St Andrew was demolished c1949 after many years of decline, disuse and decay. All that remains is the 15th Cent tower with it's vaulted ceiling and 32 carved stone bosses.
[That is part of the desriction on plate.]
Brian3989 . Excellent. Like to know what I am looking at. Such a shame it was demolished. Heart breaking.
Me to
I was born in worcester and lived the first 18 yrs of my life there. Progress?....no. im 51 now and avoid the place if possible. When i have been back its changed so much since 1988when i left that i hardly recognise it. Any character the place did have has long since gone. No offense to worcester residents now, but you are welcome to it.
Worcester still retains many beautiful historic buildings and medieval streets. Of course parts have been modernised, but the city has retained a great deal of character.
Where is this? It certainly isn't Worcester Massachusetts
J Chambers The original and best Worcester in England. A lot of American city names are copied of English cities
I can't believe that you would even have to ask.
I'm from Worcester MA and it took me a couple of minutes of watching to realize it was videos from Worcester UK.
Typical American 😂
Worcester needs a good clean up! Horrible block pathing with chewing gum on it! Pigeon crap because of people feeding them an trees in high street and in front of cathedral blocking views of beautiful buildings. The new cathedral square is a big bland space just don’t get it. And finally wooden clad new buildings awful. Otherwise Worcester still has character then and now but councillors don’t make good choices so then and now pictures get wider apart.
Karl Hyde from Underworld was born here
NO.
Ah, shit, came here to see the worcester in america
