- Happy CNY everyone!! Hope you're all enjoying eating all the CNY goodies (missing bakkwa big time) There is zero CNY vibe in NZ so decided to create some at my school by showing my classmates and instructors how to lo hei. We used to do this every year at work in Singapore so it was really fun sharing part of sg/my culture with my friends.
Sorry I've been radio silent for the last few weeks...been really stressed and tired from studying and exams (have another one in two days T.T)
I still need to upload some from my last trip and other videos so will be uploading them soon after my next exam. Enjoy the rest of your holidays and see you again soon!
Aiya you so sweet lah. You could have introduced Korean way of celebrating Lunar New Year but instead you chose to showcase Singapore's yusheng. Thank you and gong xi fa cai!
Thank you Michele. I missed doing it and everyone had so much fun that day. Happy new year to you!
From what I know Lo Hei or Yu Sheng is cantonese. It’s was created by 4 cantonese chefs in Sgp n it spread to M’sia.
It is indeed there are yu sheng in China n Japan but it was Singaporean Chefs who created Lo Hei (seven Colour) yu sheng to celebrate Lunar New Year in 1964. It became a popular and this dish became our tradition ever since.
I agree - Steve's so sweet to share the CNY tradition with his pilot-mates. "U're still such a Singaporean at heart, Steve! 👍🏻 Happy New Year! & all the best for ur remaining exams 💪🏻"
Happy new year Tris!
Great to see you bringing the tradition over to NZ! Wishing you good fortune, good health & good flying into the air! And it's nice hearing you sticking with "paiseh"!
Thank you Karen and happy new year!

Happy Lunar New Year !
So cool!!! 🧡 Blessed Happy CNY 2022 Steve!
Thank you Hsuling!
Oh gosh, oppa, you are Sporean through n through! You used "huat ah" and said "pai seh" in the video. N now, you r introducing a Spore dish to overseas (NZ). Yusheng (pronounced as yu sunk not sing) is Cantonese and is basically a spore/ msia dish, I think. The origins however came from Guangzhou China. Not all Msian Chinese do the yusheng whereas most Sporeans do it yes. It's a must have. Other than saying huat, each individual tossing the dish can also utter their own wish, like say having good health, salary increment, promotion etc but all this eventually means huat, to prosper or be better than before. Here's wishing you, a Korean "Sporean" a happy new year and all things good and wonderful in the tiger year. Lol.
Ohhhhh hey thanks for sharing that with me 😅 it was fun and everyone enjoyed it! Thank you and happy new year!
Happy new year steve 😁🎊🎊🎊very nice video of celebrating new year and i like your uniform though. Hahaha

Yes it was really fun to share this and see people experience it first time
This is originated from Singapore! Is truly a Singapore dish la. It got so popular it has spread to our neighboring countries.
OK I'll tell Damian that next time I see him :)
The "huat ah" made me lol.
Huat ahhh cny is never complete without louhey
HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE TIGER!!!
Good that you introduce what Singaporean do to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
For your information, Loh Hei (Yu Sheng) was invented by 4 Master Chefs (Cantonese Cuisine) in Singapore (not Malaysia) back in the 70s. This was because a lot of the people complained that during the Chinese New Year period, too much meat was consumed and it felt lethargic, hence the introduction of this dish which is mainly consisting of vegetables/fruits and preserved-greens with raw sliced fish. During preparation, festive and congratulatory quotes were said to help with the festive moods. The act of tossing the ingredients as high as possible is to signify bringing in more wealth, happiness and luck. To add to the significance of this dish, it is mainly prepared and partake on the 7th Day of the Lunar New Year when this day is the celebration of humankind. FYI, the 7th day is the birthday of Men (and Women).
Hope this trivial helps.
I don't think this is accurate as we had Lou Sang (as we called it in Malaysia) before the 70s. So definitely cannot say it is Singaporean.
Hey thank you so much for taking time to share all that. I'll make sure other guys read this comment 😅 happy new year..!!
I apologise for any discrepancy or wrongful fact that may have been given earlier.
I suppose it's hard to argue which place is the origin for this festive practice as Malaysians and Singaporeans has always debated as to which owns the honour of many practices and culture origins. The only thing I would say is that (we know this is so with Singapore is because of the newspaper and TV/Radio news reports) the start of this was through the 4 master chefs creation and suggestion that it be al the more auspicious when done on the 7th day of the Lunar New Year. Thus started the widespread commercial promotion of the event and/or practice.
@@nilsmada no need to apologise. Singapore was once part of Malaysia. We share many similar cultural heritage. The forefathers of Singapore were once upon a time Malaysians until it left the federation. There will be this constant fight over child crab, chicken rice, bak kut teh.... where is the best... I think is up to the individual taste. One thing I must say is that Singapore generally made many of these dishes more atas and international.
it's been said to have originated from SG.
oh very plum sauce-y 💕
Not zero CNY feeling though... I have my CNY decoration up at home.. That's 0.01%
祝 你 新年快乐!恭喜发财 !🧧🧧🍊🍊🍍🍍
祝 你 身体健康!💪💪
万事如意,心想事成~* 🍊🍊🙏🙏💜💜 (that's more plum sauce for you)
还有。。。 学业有成,一帆风顺 ! 💯💯
Now it's 1% ..?? 😁

Nice video! Huat ah to all of u at NZ 🤪
Thank you!!
Huat ah! Nice 😊
Happy new year..!
Wishing u 学业进步,步步高升 ( pass all exams & get promoted).
Hi Steve, Happy Lunar New Year.
I find it funny that Damien laughed at the list of auspicious sayings that we (Malaysians and Singaporeans) use for lou shang (means act of tossing the yu shang). Just show we are so kiasu.
Hahaha is it 😅😅😅
Huat Ah!
Yu Sheng 鱼生 means fish raw. It’s chinese. They also call it Lo Hei which means 捞起 lāo qǐ , to pull up / scoop up / dredge up,this word is Cantonese. This dish was invented in Singapore by some restaurant chefs. They don’t have it in china. Yu Sheng has many meanings like “abundance more or extra”, and Lo Hei means like “scooping up more (money)”. You know the chinese love puns. So it’s lucky things like that.
Ahh thank you for letting me know!!! Happy New year btw!
Happy lunar day steve..actually, when you toss the yu sheng you need to say lots of good words and salmon represent 年年有余=popseprity and the golden things should be last one to put after everything in as what I know from my Cantonese mummy..haha but still nice tried..
Wish you and your family stay healthy and blessed always..
Happy lunar new year..!!
Argh I knew I didn't quite get it right..!! Now that you mention it I remember doing it that way in sg
@Reddot Diaries well 갠차나..according we Chinese traditional that's lots of following to do n not to do..hehe..
@@ReddotDiaries so how did you celebrate it?
Huat Ah! Steve Bro 🤗
fish not added before mixing?

Huat ah, Steve!
Gong Xi Fa Cai! Huat Ah!
Happy new year!
Why Bojio!
I jio you you never come 😂
You don't need to specifically say "huat ah". You can add in your own versions of 'wishes', e.g. "good health ah", "lots of money ah", "plenty of girls ah', etc. 😎
Fun y I would have wished for that exact three 🤣🤣
@@ReddotDiaries Haha, I reckon that too. 😄
U forgot to add the fish before tossing lah brother lol
I know 😭😫😫
How come all asians in NZ school?😆
