I think it works because he's not an all-out macho man like Fëanor or Boromir, but with his harp, his skill at arms and tactics (though not a berserker style fighter like Tulkas or Huor) and his sharp mind, he is more of a laid-back though pure-hearted hero.
That's how you make a "perfect" character work. You make his life that of sacrifice. Always doing the right thing, no matter how much it may cost them-always bearing burdens until they can bear no more-until it cost them everything. It's why characters like these have to have an ending. Heroism demands sacrifice, and ultimate heroism demands the ultimate of sacrifices. Without that, you end up with a Superman character that goes through multiple rewrites as people lose interest, and in the end never really regains that.
I love Finrod. Especially his debate with Andreth. How kind he was to her, despite her bitterness and despair. Also, I love that he also shared the same “mind-reading” ability that his sister Galadriel had.
Yeah Hail Finrod! The first elf to befriend man, an elf of true loyalty and friendship. May you walk in peace under the trees in Eldamar with your father and your love Amarië. You were a king in cold halls of stone, may your renewed days be that of green leaves and warm sunlight.
He's what a powerful elf who lived in the light of the trees would be like if he had super low levels of pride. That's his super power. That's the primary difference. Because he did not have the pride of a superior being, he wasn't a cunt to everyone. When you aren't a cunt to human characters, human characters like you.
eyyyy! my favorite character is Finrod too! I feel like people forget/don’t realize that he’s basically the reason that the Bëorians and Hadorians fight Morgoth at all. Andreth makes it VERY clear in the Athrabeth that the Edain do not care about the Valar and aren’t even sure if they exist. The only god whose existence they can prove is Morgoth. They are not truly fighting *against Morgoth*, but rather *for Finrod*. It is their respect for him which drives their actions to oppose Morgoth in the 1st Age. Only at the very end of the 1st Age are the Edain bound to the Eldar by blood: and this comes through Finrod’s beloved cousin Turgon.
Curiously I like him best as well. Tragic as he was. He died as a small part of a far greater story. And all he built was destroyed as one more in a line of tragedies befalling another tragic character.
Excellent video. One other point I love about Finrod is the name that Humans gave him after he found and tutored them in Beleriand: Nóm, meaning "Wisdom."
Wow. My mind is blown at how you explained this character. You have expressed a perspective on Finrod in ways that I didn’t even notice and it has deeply *enriched* my view about him! LOVE this video!!!
Dave really does a great job of not only summarizing the lore (like many channels do) - but then enriches it with connections and context that really highlight the brilliance and beauty of the world Tolkien created - amazing work!
@@MellowMutts270 he is amazing - he mixes the “intellectual” linguistic analysis and encyclopedic knowledge of the lore - but makes it so accessible and friendly - and then sprinkles in conjecture and connections that are really new and novel - he deserves a really huge following for the work that goes in and enjoyment we get from his videos!
6585 years.... dear me, this video made me realize Galadriel really knew how to harbour a grudge... Finrod's fate for any reason always made me more angry than sad. Or let's say: my anger grew from my sadness about it, and no soothening comment about him being resurrected and having an happy ending in a far away paradise made me befriend with his passing. When I first read the story of Beren and Finrod getting trapped by Sauron, I thought: 'Oh, but that's his own place. To escape from your own cellars can't really be a big problem, can it?' - It was.
I agree with all you have said, but there is an interesting side note to that phial, which I do believe has been mentioned previously, but is also relevant. The Light in the phial is the light of the Silmaril taken by Beren after Finrod gave his life to ensure the continuation of the quest. In a very real sense the departed elf and man from the initial quest gained vengeance against their tormentor via the agency of Galadriel. Further, and it has never been remarked upon, I wonder if Galadriel created the phial in the memory of her brother who perished on the quest to retrieve the jewel, and so to keep some aspect of him with her, cold comfort that it would be. Another great video.
These are excellent points. And to expand on them: in Jackson's Hobbit movies (leaving aside criticisms for the moment), when the White Council goes to Dol Guldur, the film version has Galadriel banish Sauron. If you look closely at her hand she is raising up, she is holding the Phial. IIRC the books ascribe the banishment more to the devices of Saruman, but there is a real logic of using the Phial to banish Sauron. It contains the light of a silmaril, and thus the light of the Two Trees. That could overpower a Maia like Sauron much more likely than the devices of another Maia, Saruman.
@@Patrick-qed,I believe that the Lord of the Rings indicates that Ssuron dud not actually resist them as he could have because Barad-dûr was nearly rebuilt and he agaun was ready to rule in his own name. "Then he gave way before us, but only feigned to flee, and soon after came to the Dark Tower and openly declared himself." I do agree that the light of the phial gathered from a Silmaril, which was blessed by the Valar after gathering the light of the two trees, would have been a potent artifact against him, especially in the hand of the creator of such an object.
He’s a wonderful elf. He really is under appreciated. I’m really hoping Amazon doesn’t screw him up. And as always, great video. They make my Friday’s.
Amazon are the same flavor of sociopaths as Disney... I don't care about anything they vomit up... I am just buying and storing books of old before amazon starts to burn them digitally and literally, or pervert the content to make them "correct".
@@JohnSmith-is4uu that’s good to know. However, will it be a good fanfic or a bad fanfic? That is the question. Either way, I still want up see more of the costume and set designs.
I like Finarfin too. Before the KInslaying: "Okay, okay, we'll go, we'll go. He was my father too, you know!" After the Kinslaying: "You have undermined your cause and committed an evil to rival that of the Great Enemy. You're on your own! I'm out of here!"
I've read The Silmarillion four times and still get tripped up by the similarity of all the names you highlighted. The way you are able to explain each character with such insight and in such detail is amazing to me. Every video of yours that I've seen has been completely fascinating - keep up the great work.
One of the fun things about elf names is that each has so many names. A mother name and a father name. Feanor’s father name was…Finwë. And he named many of his sons… Finwë. Most go by their mother name. He didn’t spend much thought on such things.
Thus he died Nom the Wise Lord of the caves and friend of man Fair, and noble Most beloved of the Noldor race He paid the price, he redeemed the oath Farewell my friend, farewell (Blind Guardian, Nightfall in Middle Earth, 1998)
That's what trips me out about this show, portraying Galadriel as " Brash, younger, and angry she's not the wise Galadriel we know ". Bruh she saw the flaw in Féanor during the year of the trees, before the Silmarills, before Melkor's manipulation🤦🏿♂️ you also nerfed her by giving her a sword, Galadriel took down the walls of Dol Goldor with her hands or " the magic of Galadriel
It's even worse - Galadriel was a married queen at the time when Sauron was establishing his ascendency, and she was wise enough that she wasn't completely fooled by his Annatar facade. This 'brash, younger, angry' Galadriel would have been dancing to Sauron's tune. Hell, look at what they did to Elrond. Elrond's entire canon characterization is that of a wise healer who loves his world and its people, not a scheming politician.
It's funny that the Amazon shills told us that we are overreacting and should wait until the show comes out to deliver judgment, all our doubts and concerns turned out to be true. Honestly they would have been better off just burning one billion dollar than making the ROP show. Not only it's a bad adaptation but also it's a really bad show that focuses on Karen-driel being He-mandriel.
It's kind of funny sometimes thinking about Elves having a "younger sister" or "older brother". When you live for thousands and thousands of years is even a couple hundred a real age difference?
Basically from what I gathered from this video One of the few elves in all of fiction that honestly would be loved by a lot A good boy Basically good friends with everyone and the awesome uncle of Beren's family Dutiful All-around good guy Awesome singer and a badass fighter Highly instrumental to a lot of things in the legendarium
I love how Finrod, like his Uncle Fingolfin dies in his own blaze of glory, using up their fea, magic/light in one last burst of elven struggle! Fingolfin burns himself out to show that even a Gods bleed giving hope to those left behind. Finrod does the same in a final act of selflessness in defense of one in need, no matter what happens next. Badass.
Rainbow Dave, your excellent videos have renewed my love of all things related to Middle Earth, a love that began in a public library in the late 70’s with the cartoon version of The Hobbit. Your enthusiasm is quite contagious! ALSO, I seem to remember you saying Cirdan was your favorite elf in an older video 😁
@@tolkienuntangledThat’s too true. I go back and forth. It’s their fidelity that really gets to me. Finrod the the house of Barahir. And Cirdan to every elf who wanted to go west. He stayed despite his greatest wish being to go to the west. And he did so for over 10 centuries.
Finrod was such a nice guy and so good at making friends. He is the one who united the elves, the dwarves and men for the first time in friendship. And in helping Beren marry Luthien he is responsible for the first blood bond between men and elves. Remember how Maedhros struggled to form his allience and many elves and men didn't join? Imagine if Finrod had still been there. They would have had an army that would have destroyed Angband, the Balrogs, Dragons and Morgoth all within a day.
Can I just say what a wonderful refresher course these videos have been? It's been nearly a decade since I last reread the Silmarillion or the History of Middle-Earth books, but I've really been in that high fantasy mood that only Tolkien can really scratch, and your videos hit the spot perfectly. I really appreciate how you highlight some of my favorite themes in Tolkien, especially how bonds of friendship and love between people who are different from each other can empower them to resist dark powers of evil and hatred, how love for the beautiful works of the past doesn't have to mean blindness to the mistakes and misdeeds of its heroes, and how even in dark times, with courage and kindness, the dominos can be knocked over that will one day bring back the light. Finrod really embodies the first and third of those particularly well, and that shone through in this video. One quibble, just a pet peeve of mine as a therapist: "psychotic" is not a synonym for dangerous, unpredictable, or "crazy". It means having delusions, hallucinations, or other symptoms of schizophrenia, none of which really fit Feanor. He's proud, vengeful, temperamental, and vicious to be sure! (As well as brilliant, creative, and passionate.) But I don't see anything to suggest he's psychotic.
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoy the videos. Fair quibble about the word psychotic. I think when I recorded this, I originally used the word psychopathic, but then went back and re-recorded it as psychopathic doesn't fit Feanor either. I should probably have chosen a better word than psychotic though to replace it.
@@tolkienuntangled true, I think psychopathic is a better description. He simply couldn’t empathize with Olwë and the love of his ships comparable to the love of the gems of the Noldor. And because he couldn’t, he thought it validated his decision to seize the ships by force. His disregard of his half brothers is further evidence of this. I’d say he was teetering on the verge of sociopathic.
@@seanhartel5362 I've lived with a psychopath and psychopathic isn't true either. Just as the mental health clinician said above, he is vengeful, proud and temperamental. But psychopaths take delight in causing harm to others and only care about themselves. Fëanor's story is a tragic one (and no psychopath's is ever really tragic). Fëanor truly loves his father, Finwë. He is devastated when his father is murdered. In my opinion, he avenges the killing of his father more than the taking of the Silmarils. The Silmarils somehow embody his father, as if retrieving them will bring his father back to life. He is envious of his father's love for his brothers, because he wants to be unique in his father's heart, and so he wants his mother Míriel to be unique also. His father stays by his mother's side, by the side of her dead though perfectly preserved body in the garden of Yavanna (it must have been Yavanna) for aeons but eventually he lets go and marries Indis of the Vanyar. It is discussed in the History of Middle-earth (The War of the Jewels?) whether Finwë should be allowed to remarry. So you can imagine the resendment Fëanor feels for his father and then his father proves his love for him by accepting the banishment of Fëanor to Formenod for himself also, and because of this he is in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets killed for it. For which Fëanor must blame himself. So no, not a psychopath.
Except for Sauron and his minions, nobody hated Finrod Felagund. Not dwarves, not any of his kin and especially not the race of men. This elf is absolutely perfect.❤
You know, I never really thought of how Finrod had so much influence on the whole (basically) history of Middle Earth. Tolkien is such a genius for creating a character who has such an impact, yet is so subtle in its coincidence. An average writer would use a deliberate protagonist to generate these connections, but Tolkien uses a background character to touch so many arcs. Genius.
Do we think Finrod and Amarie have children after he finally returns to the west? Does Galadriel have nieces and nephews waiting for her when she gets off the boat @ the beginning of the 4th age?
I gotta say if I could transport myself into this world and meet a few of the characters Finrod would definitely be at the top of the list. Great video! I really like the in depth character analysis and am looking forward to the next one!!
Wow thanx Rainbow Dave!! This is awesome for a couple of reasons: I make deliveries at work so if I listen to this all day, this info can get ‘downloaded’ into my head. I’ve done this with a few of your videos and my mind has prolly gotten further understanding Tolkien than ever before in my life (I’m 54). Other reason: I just got to the part where you said you were working a playlist for Gondolin and now I’m all pumped because Gothmog has this reputation for being the baddest mfr ever but I haven’t really stumbled upon WHY. A friend of mine even thinks he’s more awesome than Sauron. The only thing I *kind of* know about Gothmog is…Gondolin…? I think? Anyway, I’m super excited and I love you Rainbow Dave!! I haven’t finished this yet but I’m late for work so I’ll get more into it there. 🖤🏴☠
Okay so the world has been crazy but I finally took a break from the heavy and just let this wash over me -- I don't have the bandwidth to really understand but I appreciate it today and in a few weeks I'm sure I'll appreciate it even more. Thank you for your consistency.
To me personally great characters are those who have flaws, who are conflicted and morally challenging. And yet the _best_ characters are those who are kind, and strong, and just unambiguously good - and yet they still work, and do not become stale or boring. It's a lot easier to write a Feanor, it's a lot harder to write a Finrod. Always an absolute pleasure to see an outright good, yet not boring character, they are so few and far between, and Finrod is undoubtedly one of the best i ever saw. My very favorite character in the Legendarium, mad props to Tolkien for writing him. Best king, 12/10.
I am disappointed that you made no mention of the dialogue of Finrod and Andreth. It seems to me that alone among the high elves, Finrod sought to understand the nature of the Mortal Heart and recognized that the Hildor were coeval spirits in the mind of Iluvatar, as opposed to most others who looked down upon the Atani. In Tolkien's writings, I found the speech of Finrod and Andreth among the most profound and moving in the entire legendarium.
@@milankjoseski8317 I delayed responding to let myself cool off a bit, but it seems to me that many of these channels suffer from 'elf envy' much as the King's party in Numenor did.
Their 'looking down" upon the Atani might be because of their jealousy fueled by Morgoth's lies. Remember some of the Noldor went to ME, not only cuz of Feanor but they also feel like they have the higher authority (being the "first borns") in ME over Men, and that Morgorth told them that the reason why the Valar kept them Valinor is that Eru favors the Atani with giving them the gift and that ME is reserved for the Atani to have dominion over (which is true but he twisted it in a way that it made it sound like the Eldar are the inferior race).
I am a huge fan of Finrod, for many reasons, but mostly for his love of many of the races of Middle-earth--Men, elves and Dwarves. Thank you for this in-depth look at this noble being.
A movie about Finrod would turn him into a muscle-bound, sword-swinging action hero, and that is the last thing we need. His duel with Sauron would be full of flashing lights instead of singing.
I'm ashamed to say this is my first time watching this video. I'll be totally honest I did not know who Penrod was until I started watching this channel which made me go and read the Silmarillion.
All praise lord Finrod Felagund - he loved everyone and died so that mortal man might live, and was resurrected to live in bliss with his father (and girlfriend) in paradise!
For the first time I am really reading and studying The Silmarillion and it is moving. I am particularly moved by Finrod Felagund's death by saving Beren in Morgoth's dungeons. I sure hope that the Amazon's teaser trailer showed Finrod's death in battle.
Every now and then, rarely....you may meet a person of such a noble nature, it seems like they are fake. People for whom being calm, patient, and kind, just naturally come to them, like breathing, and rarely are they angry or distraught. Ive met such a man, and i think tolkien used the elves in general to represent such people. I believe i heard somewhere that just about everything tolkein put in his stories, went to represent something from the real world.
TH-cam is nutty. Rainbow Dave: “And the reason Finarfin matters right now is because he is, of course, the father of-“ TH-cam Ad: “Febreze!” Confusing family tree because the names sound so similar, indeed. I guess TH-cam figured they could sneak a “Feb-“ in amongst the “Fëa-“ and “Fin-“s.
The diversity of Finarfin's elven family is seldom covered, nor is the history of him of the history of the Battle of Alqualonde and how that may have affected him. It is an amazing history. Thank you for explaining Finrod's life, and more importantly his death, according to the books. They are so often overlooked.
Hi Dave, I'm pretty new to your channel. It's very good, well done. Your passion for and knowledge of Tolkien is very impressive. I agree with you on Finrod, he's an epic hero.
After finding out about everything before lotr and hobbit just a year ago he is my favourite I'm sure you swayed me a bit but he is. Oh was gutted to find out Amazon only has the rights to lotr and the hobbit and none of the other books or ages. I was gutted finding that out. My expextations have been getting lower and lower. One interesting thing in Tolkien’s universe is that sometimes some people will be a synthesis of all the peoples we have learned to love : Earendil and Elwing are the first example that comes to mind, being half-elves related to nearly all of Illuvatar’s children. Well, Finrod also do : he descends from all the Calaquendi’s clans, but he also, and most importantly, he was the first to befriend Dwarves and Men. And when we see how influential the couple of Earendil and Elwing is, Finrod awesomeness makes more sens.
@@queenberuthiel5469 I liked Narnia, but I totally agree. As he is now? He looks nothing like the awesome dude who challenged SAURON to a singing match. Tbh, when I first saw the trailer, that scene cracked me up. The fact that this could be Finrod? Instant dread.

Thank you, once again! And here's a strange question given the days we're living in but I'd be interested to learn what you think: What kind of Tolkien character do you think resembles Putin and his thinking the most?
That's an interesting question. My instinct is to say Morgoth but that's probably a bit too easy. Perhaps one of the more corrupt Numenorean kings, maybe even Ar Pharazon? There seems to be a deep arrogance in what Putin's doing, and a sense that smaller nations don't really matter next to his mightier country (at least in his mind). The 'might makes right' mentality is something we only see in Tolkien's villains, and I think if Tolkien were alive today, he'd have some very harsh criticism of Putin.
@@tolkienuntangled Thanks for your thoughts! I was thinking of Ar Pharazon too or perhaps Fëanor and his greed which blinded him and causing hurt to many. But it seems Ar Pharazon has a much more political and expansionist mindset that could be translated into the present-day circumstances
@@tolkienuntangled of course in Putin’s mind he sees himself as Aragorn, the one to restore his kingdom to greatness and expand it and bring others back under it. He might claim to be a king, but he’s really still an agent of a darker, older power that uses him and sucked the hope and humanity out of him. Eru wanted us to laugh, despite Amazon's best efforts to deny us that, they only proved to be an instrument to make us laugh even harder. Alex M quoted Galadriel as listing only three (3) brothers. She leave out Orodreth. Yet many of the family trees show him as the second done of Finarfin. What gives?
In the Silmarillion, Orodreth is another son of Finarfin, but in some of Tolkien's later writings, he is the grandson of Finarfin, and the son of Angrod. Usually I would stick to what's written in the Silmarillion, but in this case Christopher Tolkien wrote that the Silmarillion was probably published in error, and his father probably intended for Orodreth to be Angrod's son in his later years. The same is true for Gil-galad. In the published Silmarillion, Gil-galad is the son of Fingon and the grandson of Fingolfin. But in later writings he is the son of Orodreth, and thus the great grandson of Finarfin. Although in this case I definitely choose to believe that Gil-galad is the son of Fingon.

Finrod is also one of my favorites. He is just so cool.
Also, it blew my mind when you said the ring of Barahir is older than the sun.
@@tomk537 he is by far the best Tolkien TH-camr on the platform.

What a beautiful story! First time I've ever heard those really interesting connections and fates brought together in one summary.
"Angrod is gone, and Aegnor is gone, and Felagund is no more.
Of Finarfin’s children I am the last."

The way you are able to explain each character with such insight and in such detail is amazing to me. Every video of yours that I've seen has been completely fascinating - keep up the great work.
Thanks very much! I'm really glad you enjoy the videos.
One of the fun things about elf names is that each has so many names. A mother name and a father name. Feanor’s father name was…Finwë. And he named many of his sons… Finwë. Most go by their mother name. He didn’t spend much thought on such things.
Thanks for doing this. He became my favourite Elf right from his first meeting with the Edain, let alone his later deeds.
Well met RD! EXCELLENT WORK! Finrod is one who'd call Mellon! The self-less sacrifice....is there anything more noble?
Thus he died

Lord of the caves and friend of man
Fair, and noble
Most beloved of the Noldor race
He paid the price, he redeemed the oath

The show is just not gonna make it. I’ve tried to hold out hope, but it ain’t happening.
@@johnt.inscrutable1545 yeah it's gonna suck
It's funny that the Amazon shills told us that we are overreacting and should wait until the show comes out to deliver judgment, all our doubts and concerns turned out to be true. Honestly they would have been better off just burning one billion dollar than making the ROP show. Not only it's a bad adaptation but also it's a really bad show that focuses on Karen-driel being He-mandriel.
It's kind of funny sometimes thinking about Elves having a "younger sister" or "older brother". When you live for thousands and thousands of years is even a couple hundred a real age difference?
Good point lol
Basically from what I gathered from this video
One of the few elves in all of fiction that honestly would be loved by a lot
A good boy
Basically good friends with everyone and the awesome uncle of Beren's family
Dutiful
All-around good guy
Awesome singer and a badass fighter
Highly instrumental to a lot of things in the legendarium
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoy the videos! Yeah, even with a gun to my head I couldn't choose between Cirdan and Finrod.
What every man and king should aspire to be. The World could sure use him now!
I can confirm. Finrod is awesome. ;)
This is yet another excellent work. Thank you so much.
One can argue that Feanor manifested paranoid tendencies, with a dash of megalomania.
@@johnt.inscrutable1545 That is extremely not what "sociopath" means.

Always always a pleasure… such a nice surprise at the end of a long day! Thanks Rainbow 🌈 Dave!
I agree with your choice..so sad he had to join the march of the noldor ..and his love life..well at least he got resurrected...more power bro
The fact he could even put up a fight against Sauron made him very unique and memorable forsure!
Well, according to Tolkien himself, Gothmog was an inferior to Sauron in any case and less mfr
I am still waiting one of these channels to do a proper breakdown of their talk. It is in my view the very essence of all Tolkiens works.
@@milankjoseski8317 I delayed responding to let myself cool off a bit, but it seems to me that many of these channels suffer from 'elf envy' much as the King's party in Numenor did.
Please, check out his video "The Edain: elf-friends among men" and you'll find the "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth"!
And also his video: "The doom of Beren and Lúthien (The afterlife in Middle-Earth)".
No wonder, I love Finrod so much! 🥰

I am a huge fan of Finrod, for many reasons, but mostly for his love of many of the races of Middle-earth--Men, elves and Dwarves. Thank you for this in-depth look at this noble being.
Wow it should be a movie about Finrod Felegund 💕
A movie about Finrod would turn him into a muscle-bound, sword-swinging action hero, and that is the last thing we need. His duel with Sauron would be full of flashing lights instead of singing.
I love your enthusiasm for Tolkiens characters and how they are all your favorites😂 it really draws me in and makes me want to know more about them👍

TH-cam Ad: “Febreze!”
Confusing family tree because the names sound so similar, indeed. I guess TH-cam figured they could sneak a “Feb-“ in amongst the “Fëa-“ and “Fin-“s.

He might claim to be a king, but he’s really still an agent of a darker, older power that uses him and sucked the hope and humanity out of him. I pray to Erû Illuvitar that they get Galadriel and Finrod right
Eru wanted us to laugh, despite Amazon's best efforts to deny us that, they only proved to be an instrument to make us laugh even harder. Proves that even the most worthless and pitiful writers that nobody wanted them before, can still make humorous shows without even trying, they turned one of the strongest, fairer and beautiful elven lady Galadriel to something that goes by many names in the show like Karen-driel, Guy-ladriel, He-Man-driel, Marry Suegdriel or SheHulk-driel. Also turned Gilgalad to Fail-galad.
A thousand years are a mere blink of an eye for an Elf, we can wait for someone faithful to Tolkien to adapt his work for the screen faithfully.
