- What on Earth happened to the Circassians? The Caucasus is an interesting region with a load of many diverse and unique peoples such as the Armenians, Georgians and Azerbaijanis, but what about the groups that you probably haven't heard of? Thousands of years before the present day, different peoples inhabited parts of Europe and the Near East who, linguistically-speaking, are entirely unrelated to the groups we see there today. The Circassians are an example of such an ancient people.
In today's video we're going to be looking at the history and culture of the Circassians and some of the surrounding Caucasian natives like the Abkhaz, Chechens, Ingush and Dagestanis. Thanks for watching!

th-cam.com/video/geQMg2m3i74/w-d-xo.html
Yes , they are , there is a muslim family i know here in Egypt.
From what I could gather by a simple google search, they are widely known, but their culture and language were assimilated by other Caucasian peoples
About what?
Remember when the Turks did pre select Circassians children to be educated according to their vocational skills, to later be entrusted with key positions in government. For their families was like wining the Lottery !!!
As a Circassian, I want to express my deep appreciation for you covering this topic since subscribing to you. I even learned a few new things. Being in diaspora of your homeland will do that to you.
So sad. I feel for your people. Do you still speak the language or something like that?
@@jorgeh.r9879 it is a dying language, one that most of my people barely know a few words from like I do but there are many who still do and encourage the teaching of it. We remain in small communities littered around the world and struggled to keep our traditions and culture alive mostly through our music and dance but we severely lack in our ability to retain the language when assimilation is rampant.
@@DamienZshadow What a pity. I support all goals of the Circassian people. It would be pretty cool if the Circassians in the diaspora returned to Circassia.
@@jorgeh.r9879 Many are trying to and many are nationalists seeking to reestablish our nation in the process while others are more accepting of the current status quo either to keep the peace with Russia or because we have settled in the countries we live in like I have with a marriage, managing a business and having two sons of my own. Don't get me wrong, I still want to visit and learn more about my culture as well as have my sons learn who they are but I am not in any position to pack up and live in a land I have never seen.

Yeh, like the Georgians and Armenians recovering their lands from Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan that have overun Georgian and Armenian territories that have been overrun over the last century. The history of the area has indeed been tragic, ranging from the Kurds, Asyarians and Circassians, all persecuted, murdered and driven out of their homeland especially the Armenians, at the hands of the Ottomans. Visited Fenner in Istanbul recently, the areas being revived after the expulsion of Jewish and Christian orthodox Turkish citizens with the 1950s riots. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and joining the central powers in WW1 with a Jihad, Russian Imperial ambitions, and the Russian/Soviet civil wars have all contributed to such human suffering and intolerance. Such is the human condition

I first heard of Circassians because I have horses and study equestrian cultures and history of people groups with close bonds with horses and horsemanship, and the Circassians are famous for their hardy horses. I believe the modern Karbada and Karachay horses are the decendents of the Circassian horses. Anyways, great video as always Mason!
The Karachay horse is a made up name for Kabardian "Circassian" horse, this name never existed before the Soviet union
In the Soviet times, the government built 3 main horse breading bases in the Caucasus, one in Krasnodar, another in Karachay-Cherkess Republic, and the third in Kabardino-Balkaria Republic
These horse breading bases were built to bread only Kabardian horses to provide the Soviet army
But the Karachay people started calling the Kabardian horses which were breed in their territory as Karachay horse, which's basically stealing
You'd never find any mention of Karachay horse before the 20th century, meanwhile you can search Kabarda or Kabardian horses and you'll find many Russian and European books and sources talking about the Kabardian breed, some even mentioned that it was the only breed that existed in the Caucasus region at some point, and most Caucasians even Russian Cossacks to buy their horses from Kabarda
If you need any i can provide you with some of these sources
Kabardians, Karachays - all Circassians. There used to be one country, which included 12 large nations and several smaller ones. It was Circassia. And the horses were Kabardian, if someone said to someone "you ride like a Kabardian", it would be a big compliment.

You, like the Ossetians, are descendants of the Romans who founded the Roman Empire. The people who built the Roman Empire were not Latins, but the ancestors of your people and the Ossetians.
If you want to find evidence that your ancestors were Romans, your only way is to read history books written by ancient Chinese court historians. The ancient Chinese did not name this country the Roman Empire, but Daqin, because the civil servants and people living in the empire looked like Chinese, so they called it by the name of the Chinese dynasty, the State of Qin.
The male Y-chromosome G haplogroup is the oldest Roman gene, while the Latin gene is J2, R1b and E3b. Later, when the Roman Empire fell, the barbaric Latins from the northwest took the opportunity to go south and capture Constantinople. Some of the Romans defeated by the Latins fled to Iran and Iraq, and some fled to the Caucasus Mountains by boat in the Black Sea.
You can compare the difference between Y-chromosome G haplogroup and Y-chromosome J2 haplogroup. Gene G is not only distributed around the Middle East and the Mediterranean, but also in southern India, Sri Lanka, Java Island and the Strait of Malacca. The Romans representing Gene G once controlled the entire Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. Chinese history books also wrote that after the Silk Road on the land was broken, the Roman Empire was still able to come to China to provide tribute from the Silk Road on the sea.
On the other hand, after the Latins became the Romans, it was the Byzantine Empire that later declined. Not only was it a subject of the Arab Empire, but also a subject of the Ottoman Turk Empire.
How much diversity...what a treasure, simply fascinating.
I agree 100%

They definitely dance well, but secular means non-religious (if I'm not mistaken as a native english speaker) so maybe that's not what you meant to say before saying that they're faithful
@@omnacky well of my small knowledge I don’t believe they are as religious as some other Muslim communities. For instance, I think rarely women wear a head scarf for example.
@@YakoubBouyahji It is true what you said, we are Muslims, but Radicalism is never accepted in the Circassian society. We have adopted a more secular lifestyle. Because that was our culture before we became Muslims. We have a culture where gender equality is accepted and women are much more free than in the Islamic geography. I have to admit that we are secular according to the geography of Turkey we live in. I witnessed some Circassians being accused of not being religious. Anyway. Everyone is happy :)
@@YakoubBouyahji just because a Muslim woman doesn't wear a headscarf, doesn't mean she's not religious. The headscarf is just 1 percent of Islam. Islam includes thousands of other things. Just because someone isn't following one percent, it doesn't mean they are not Muslim or religious anymore. A woman who wears a headscarf could also be smoking and drinking alcohol. Would she still be seen as religious, just because she wears a headscarf? In my home country, all sex-workers wear the hijab, so would you equate those sex-workers as being extremely good religious Muslims? "Religious" is a very vague term which doesn't really mean anything. Every single Muslim on the planet follows some part of Islam, and not another and that's okay, they are still Muslims and we love and appreciate them all, and don't judge or call them non-religious. And let's not forget that hijab is a concept, not a piece of cloth on your head. it literally means a barrier, i.e. to dress and behave in such a way that men or women aren't attracted to you lustfully. There is hijab for men and women too, and the first form of hijab is not to stare lustfully at the opposite sex and keep your gaze lowered. Judging others and segregating them into "religious" and "non-religious" or "headscarf wearing" or "not headscarf wearing" isn't a part of Islam, and it is actually Haram. So if you judge a Muslim and call them non-religious, it's actually you who are non-religious because taunting and pointing fingers and judging is not a part of Islam either. It is incorrect to think Islam lies only in clothes. Islam is much more than that, but unfortunately the West has made the headscarf synonymous with being a Muslim or religious, and not wearing a headscarf with being synonymous with non-religious or liberal. It's really sad and also quite incorrect.

As slaves in the majority of countries.... slaves were given the names of the local Arabic speaking populations and once they were freed from slavery or bought their freedom they were Arabized and became members of the local population and intermarried with them.
There was a time in Egypt's history when there were many Circassian male slaves trained as soldiers and became members of the famous 'Mamluke Dynasty' that ruled Egypt and parts of the Levant during the middle ages. The Mamelukes became so powerful that they over took Egypt at one time.
In that time the land was known as 'Dawlat Al Jarakisa' ( State of the Circassians'

I have the complete look of a Circassian woman but cannot speak the language and never seen my true homeland… hopefully one day…

Especially in the second half of the nineteenth century, the number of Circassian slaves imported from the Caucasus to Istanbul actually increased, due to the forced migration of the Caucasian population that was under threat by the Russian state.57 The sale of children was widespread among the Circassians, mosty among those who already belonged to the slave class.

hate to break it to you but returning to fight the Russians is kind of an euphemism for Armenian genocide.. but it is your family tell yourself nice stories. they are dead and you do not think killing Christians is bad anyway.
@@puzzled012 the Circassian genocide happened in the mid to late 1800s by Russians while the Armenian genocide happened in the early 1900’s by Turks. the events were half a century apart so I don’t know how saying that the male Circassians in my distant family return and most likely were murdered at the hands of Russians is a euphemism for the Armenian genocide. The only relationship the two events had were that they were genocides against ethnic minorities in the generally the same area. The story I know is about survivors of a genocide heading to Egypt and marrying into my Turkish side while the men went to defend their homeland against Russian expansion. If people compare or deny or downplay the events by using the other then I was not aware.
