  • Did you know how to plant dragon fruit at home. Many people ask me how to grow dragon fruit at home from cutting. This video will share with you how to plant dragon fruit until harvest.
Dragon fruit is subtropical plant it originate from South America. The fruit is unique and super delicious. You can plant dragon fruit from seeds or from cutting at home. Buy some dragon fruit in mall or supermarket. Separate the flash and seeds and try to dry under the sun. Sow in high quality of potting mix. It start to sprout after 6 to 21 days. If you want to plant dragon fruit from cutting you can buy from your friends or buy from online sellers.
Bear in mind that planting dragon fruit from seed will take too long to bear fruit that is about 3 or 4 years. So better to plant dragon fruit from cutting. It only take a couple of month to produce fruits. Two method that you can plant dragon fruit from cutting are first sprout them in soil and second sprout them in water. It take 3 weeks or more to produce roots.
Take note that dragon fruit have two type of fruiting. Those are called self-fertile (self-pollinate) and self sterile (cross-pollinate). You can choose any varieties that you want to plant like Connie Mayer Dragon Fruit, American Beauty Dragon Fruit, Cebra Dragon fruit, Vivid purpurea Dragon fruit, Dark Star Dragon Fruit, Asunta Dragon Fruit, Ecuador yellow Dragon fruit etc etc.
In this video will show you some of activities when you plant dragon fruit from cutting like:
    1. Sprouting dragon fruit cutting
Choose the best cutting or you can buy cutting in online.
    2. Potting soil preparation
Use fertile and loose soil and enough nutrient for planting dragon fruit. You can buy potting mix that available in your area. I just use potting mix with soil, compost rice husk and dolomite (homemade potting soil).
    3. Planting dragon fruit cutting in pot
If you have limited space you can plant dragon fruit in pot. Choose large pot about 20 liters and above to plant your dragon dragon fruit cutting.
    4. Planting dragon fruit cutting container
You can also plant dragon fruit in large containers.
    5. Planting dragon fruit cutting in the ground
Usually people choose this for planting their dragon fruit. If you plant dragon fruit in the ground it growth faster.
    6. Watering dragon fruit plants
Dragon fruit plant not necessarily to water everyday. You can water your dragon fruit when the surface is start to dry. So water it twice a week. Don't forget to water your cutting after planting.
    7. Weeding
Most important is remove weeds on area of yours dragon fruit. Here in my country Malaysia, weeds faster to grow.
    8. Fertilization
Use any type of fertilizer high in nitrogen. You can use organic fertilizer or chemical fertilizer.
    9. Pruning dragon fruit branch
Choose a small shoots to cut.
    10. Fruiting fertilization
When you dragon fruit plant matured enough, try to fertilize them high in potassium to induce flowers and fruits. Don't put this type of fertilizer if your plant only about 3 months and below.
    11. Harvesting
If the fruits is full of ripen you can harvest it. Enjoy your dragon fruit meal from your backyard.

beautiful explanation .... I have adult plants and some in the lower part in contact with the ground become yellow and soft, why? too much water or too much sun exposure? the aerial part is green and in excellent health.

I live in the Czech republic, the heart of Europe and the temperatures here aren’t quite ideal. They are fine enough to grow them succesfully in the glass houses (apologies for my bad english) but how about without them? Is there a way or would it just be effort thrown out of the window? (Considering my goal is to get fruits)

Yes you can plant dragon fruit in your country. I have buy cutting of dragon fruit from Lebanon last year. Just choose the best location for your dragon fruit and don't forget to fertilize with compost.

Dragon fruit cutting is slow grower so don't worry. When the root come out in the ground. They will grow faster. Put some fertilizer every 3 weeks to booster your dragon fruit to grow well. Happy gardening.
