Broken DELL Inspiron 5475 ALL in ONE Computer - Trying to FIX

  • In this video I attempt to fix a Dell All in One (AiO) computer. It has already been looked at by a professional repair shop, and was eventually sold on eBay for £249 as spares or repair.
    The fault was listed as a motherboard fault, but on initial testing it is showing no display. Can it be fixed? Let's find out!
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Spoiler Saver & Riddle
    How can you add eight 8s to make (equal) 1000? for example 88+88+888+8=1072 which is incorrect!

    • @Operational117
      @Operational117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Welp, guess I'll add my two cents (or pennies?):
      888+88+8+8+8 = 1000
      888+88 = 976
      976 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 976 + 24 = 1000

      any Bios updates or AMD micro code drives on AMD's site for a-12?

    • @BuGGzLoVeRsTech
      @BuGGzLoVeRsTech 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vince I might be wrong but some of the devices you show listed @22:28 SM Bus controller & PCI controller are generally to do with the Chipset.
      If you go onto the AMD Driver download page here www.amd.com/en/support or via google up to you.
      Select -
      Processors with graphics-
      then select - AMD A-Series Processors-
      AMD A12 Series APU for Desktop-
      7th Gen A12-9800E APU -
      Download - install - Restart the system the other devices should be fine then as id imagine the Touch, Bluetooth, camera would all go through the chipset👍
      !!Edited!! (I double checked and this is just for the Graphics driver)... You will need to find out what chipset the system is running and then select that trough the AMD driver list, again CPU-Z can help with this on the motherboard tab of CPU-Z it should state the Chipset name👍!!
      It's also on the AM4 socket so depending on the CPU support list for this model & bios updates you could put one of the newer Ryzen APU's in, the APU in the system now is a 35Watt part so as long as you stick to one around that wattage you should be fine.
      The newer APU's have Ryzen cores on the CPU side of things so decent upgrade, you should see a decent bump in performance as the A12 is a little weak really now.
      A couple of APU's you could try are the 2400GE & 3400GE if you can (FIRST) find the CPU support list for this model as it should state what APU are compatible, there might also be a bios update for it and that would improve your upgrade path.
      Ill have a look around see if I can find a bios update or support list for it👍

    • @BuGGzLoVeRsTech
      @BuGGzLoVeRsTech 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mymatevince There is a bios update but it doesn't say much in terms of support list on the Dell Website, I just put DELL Inspiron 5475 bios in google and it was the first thing that came up.
      If you want to know what bios version the system is on and it doesn't state it in the Bios of the system itself, download (CPU-Z) and it might state it on the motherboard tab in the CPU-Z tool👍

    When I have suspected driver issues with Windows like this, I generally like to run a Linux live OS via USB. If things work in Linux alright, then I know for sure it's a software issue. If they still don't work, Linux has tools to help determine what the issue is. It depends what machine I'm working on which Linux distro I use, but generally something like Ubuntu or Mint work well for this purpose.

    • @chrisreynolds6331
      @chrisreynolds6331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I tend to keep a Linux mint live USB handy for any machine with no HDD or OS. Overcomes the uncertainty about drivers.

  • @damianphoenix420
    @damianphoenix420 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Have you tried a LIVE-Ubuntu CD or Stick? Just to make sure it is a driver issue? It can work (touch & bluetooth) if you use a linux os. But you can first try it with just a live CD or USB. Just a tip ;p

    Connect it back to the tv with a keyboard plugged in and try to boot into the bios to see if anything is disabled....I've had laptops in the past with screen disabled and only working externally....worth a try!

    • @g.h.190
      @g.h.190 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Surprised that have a look in bios is not suggested in more comments. With the working screen tv isn't even needed. Touch on AIO computers was very hated.
      I know, I know, bios is dead. It is UEFI now.

    • @mjrdainbramage
      @mjrdainbramage 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@g.h.190 Good point! Possibly also a BIOS/UEFI upgrade should be done. An upgrade will in some cases expand compatibility, and/or introduce new issues. In this case however it is worth a try if it can't be fixed in the BIOS settings. Having worked quite a bit with the Dell computers, I know that a BIOS downgrade is usually not very complicated if the new BIOS causes additional issues.

    Nothing screams driver issues like Realtek HD Audio ... talk about on board sound being garbage, this guys are the kings.

    • @ExecutorQ3
      @ExecutorQ3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      indeed, i'm so shocked how many ppl are fine with realtek audio bs as their audio driver - last time i tried their "hd audio" product it made weird sound while i was scrolling down web browser... after that i just inserted my olf sb x-fi and i'm running it till this day (just with win10 updates disabled since win10 loves to push new drivers for this card which lobotomizes it and completely kills the controll app functions).. it's just funny as hell they can even call themselves audio chip producers (since you can record same sound quality on public toilets

    • @gellert-max-nagy
      @gellert-max-nagy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While generally you may be right, there are exceptions.
      For example I have a Fujitsu Amilo laptop from 2005! Got it for free :)
      It has a Realtek AC97 - ALC655 (Onboard) sound. Nothing poshy, right?
      But it has a digital optical output built in.
      I've upgraded CPU, RAM, HDD and Wifi on it.
      It runs Windows 7 (with extended updates) and is connected now to my home audio system using a fiber optic cable. I use it to listen to internet radio stations with 320kbit/s or higher quiality (over Wifi).
      I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality is absolutely perfect, just like listening to CDs.
      I can hear no artifacts or distortion even at high volumes. My audio system is also an old Philips home cinema receiver I think I bought it in 2006.

    Great video. I find that sometimes these all-in one machines were designed for Windows 7 or below and often work correctly if you install the O/S that it originally had. Also, get a small cheap SSD drive for testing purposes. Windows (and all of the updates) will load so much quicker than when using an HDD. Also you can swap quickly between operating systems to see if its a Windows 10 compatability problem thats causing the suspected driver issues. Anyhow, thumbs up from me.

    Hey Vince, thank you for another great repair video. One way to troubleshoot the problem is to create an Ubuntu Live USB flash drive. Just an idea, cheers.

    Hey Vince, long time watcher and fan!!
    Couple things to try for those driver issues. For any ''Unknown Driver'' issues you can search what the driver is using its Hardware ID. Right Click Unknown Device then click Properties. Click Details Tab. ''Property'' Dropdown box Click ''Hardware IDs''. In the Value Box underneath highlight the top line and Google Search it (Copy/Paste). It'll tell you what the component is and able to search for its Driver.
    Secondly to fix Bluetooth & Front Camera try updating the Chipset Driver. This under Device Manager/System Devices/Top Line. This has been known on many laptops with Windows 10 to cause issues cos Manufacturer & Microsoft don't update this correctly.
    Lastly try IObit Driver Booster. This my go to to update any drivers and never failed me in 10 years!!
    Hope there's a follow up Video with this working as it should be

    Windows you driver(s) me mad!
    Great vid, thought the IO board would be your physical problem.
    Finding just the right driver for some touch applications seem to be a bit hit and miss even from the manufacturer.
    Latest grumpy day :- running an Aorus cooler in my build and after update the cool little LED screen stopped showing CPU data.
    Tried driver rollback...its a nope.
    Tried gigabyte website...they don't have older driver software..they delete when new drivers come to market!
    Then found that just one Reddit user had a link on Google drive to the correct driver , job sorted and everything works again.
    Maybe you should try an older driver from when pc was built rather than most current one?
    Looking forward to more vids , you certainly seem to have improved your skills from your first ones!
    Keep up the good and very entertaining work👍

    That motherboard looks like a beefed up Inspiron laptop. I bought an 8th Gen based Inspiron 5580 for £80 on ebay last month for spares and repairs. Problems with it turned out to be due to someone taken a support bracket from the heatsink assembly so the wasn't in contact with the fan. The fan needed to be replaced as well. At least with Dells you can repair them yourself quite easily if you know what you're looking for unlike modern Apple products! Keep up the great work!

    What was the operating system that the computer was designed to run ORIGINALLY?? I have 2 computers that can run Windows 10 perfectly, except one of them doesn't detect the audio driver because it isn't compatible with Windows 10 and Microsoft decided not to release an updated version that is compatible for some reason and the other machine didn't detect the Wi-Fi chip until I replaced it for the same reason. Great fix Vince. What would be interesting is if you swapped those chips in a revisit to see if your theory was correct or if something to do with the SN75DP159. Interesting to see how the chip is the same as the One S, that was a nice surprise and I'd imagine you have one or 2 available 😁
    On a side note, it sounds more like you might have a chipset driver issue not an issue with the webcam driver specifically. Built in webcams are based on the USB protocol and I'd imagine the touchscreen would be too. Like you say with the IC the chipset is a common link. You could try driver magician, it costs $30 USD but it's very accurate and reliable software:)

After I used the recovery CD to reinstall the original WIndows 10 Home and drivers it all worked fine again... but again updating with later versions of Windows 10 and going Pro made the touchscreen, bluetooth and webcam stop working all over so definitely a driver issue! So in the end I use it as a normal computer, minus the touchscreen which I dont use on a desktop display anyway, and added an external usb webcam and a bluetooth dongle to it so all good I guess!

    Vince, if you are convinced that it is a driver problem and that it worked at some point I’d suggest re-flashing the bios to a version which would have been contemporary with the hardware after launch from the manufacturer site and then load a liteweight os, perhaps a version of Linux, on a memory stick to test it out. In one sense it is annoying you get partial failures but on less well made machines (cough, MacBooks) the loss of say one USB port can be enough to kill the whole machine.
    Separately, if you look online you can find a range of stand-alone screen testers which can plugin directly to the panel and show test patterns. The better testers come with dozens of connector cables to cope with the wide variety of panels in use. I looked at them but wouldn’t get the use ... of you are doing more laptops or TVs then it might be worth the investment.
    Keep up the great work 👏👏

Probably too much work, but wondered if you could get a set of software and drivers from when it was first released to check? Touchscreen support you can maybe imagine keep being an issue, but camera and bluetooth are on almost everything so those 2 must really annoy you. Great video.

I would call this a fix as you had nothing to start and you have got it to the stage where a known fault that you cant fix has been identified. Is it possible to use an older version of windows 10 to see if it works with that? Screen does look good, it would be interesting to see if you could plug a DVD player into it and have a nice film watching capable TV in your kitchen or something

    Hi Vince, I had an issue similar to yours on another device. Going back to the days of Old. With the WEB Cam, I would trying installing the drivers for the camera without it plugged in. I had a problem with a USB Cable that had a Certain type Chipset and it was very annoying. I had to uninstall all the drivers go into the registry and clean any remains there as well. Then installed the drivers for the crazy chipset and after days and days of messing with this Cable it WORKED and has worked fine since. Not saying this your issue and most likely you have already tried this but hey...Worth a shot

    Id still consider this a success at that price. Not only did you fix it, but you got some great content which i enjoyed alot! Despite the bluetooth and webcam stuff that doesnt even matter. Oh and for Gaming, you can load up project X Cloud on it if you have gamepass or even GeForce Now and run modern day games on it easy streaming online! 😀 This was Great!

    I had a Dell AMD all in one and I replaced the daughter card module. It was responsible for the video out, just as yours was. Fixed it (it's an older model, not as sophisticated as yours). Interestingly, last I knew the touch still worked on mine. If that's driver-related, you should find an original install of Win 10 to prove or disprove that. Good video, but chasing drivers to rule out the non-display is best to be avoided as the first-option.

    The touchscreen, bluetooth and webcam are most likely all on the same internal USB bus. It could still be a power or data issue with that USB controller/bus. I've seen similar things before where one device fails to start / sips too much power (due to a short); the controller reset and nothing works. But if you then plug in one thing, that thing might work.
    It might be worth looking into that; but besides all that this is still a very nice and usable device without those features. Great job!

    Try running driver booster (iobit website, free version) on it , usually does the trick for most things , also try downloading the drivers from amd for the a12 and dell support assistant (also downloadable from google) might pick up a bios update hopefully, great video as always :)

    hey Vince, you should try a bios update and a chipset update from the dell website, also the webcam and bluetooth drivers if the have them, dont"t do the automatic stuff, they never solve these problems, keep up the good work:)

    Welcome to the world of "Windows Update" when it comes to driver updates. I had an oldish HP desktop for work which WU would auto-update the NIC drivers on, problem is, the NIC drivers it was installing automatically, were 6yrs older than the official NIC drivers already on the system (either from Realtek or HPs own website).

    You've turned into a repair god I think!!! Does sound like driver issues! Did you pull the latest ones down from the Dell website? Also check there's not a firmware update available from Dell too!

      Hahaha, my new favourite comment. Although I feel you are just being kind I have screenshot it, and will brag about it where I can. Cheers Chris!!! I did download the drivers via Dell, and also since the vid downloaded Windows 8.1 just in case it pulled up the touchscreen drivers... still no joy 👍👍👍👍

      @@Mymatevince maybe it dosnt have a touchscreen cause tbh the screen top layer looks as my monitor top layer from what i know if it was touchscreen it should have glass on top of the display and not a matte anti reflective layer or maybe the board you got isfrom a model sku that has no touchscreen and webcam

      If you check the hardware ID in the device properties you can look up what device it is - or use AIDA 64

    Windows update doesn't necessarily give correct drivers. U need original dell drivers for this model & correct windows version this model came with. Anyway, congrats for fixing the main issue!

    Confirmation and testing the broken board would've been interesting. Driver problems isn't the most fun content. I think it's the motherboard though, but you have to start with the drivers

    I would say that the bluetooth could be a missing wireless card remember when you said there is an m.2 slot for ssd maybe that was a port for the wireless card because m.2 ssd have very similar ports and i would say the actual webcam module is broke as its a tempermental issue and i would say the touchscreen may be a hidden driver or a faulty digitizer i hope to see a revisit your videos are very entertaining and inspiring keep uo the great work

    Amazing work, Vince! Keep up with the awesome videos! Let me ask you one thing... I have a barely used Logitech G601 mouse that stopped working when I opened it to clean up the switches... All buttons and lights work, but the laser circuit seem to have died, because the mouse doesn't move anymore and the laser doesn't turn on... I bet it would be awesome to see you trying to fix it! Do you accept such donations?

    I wonder if it would be possible to install a ryzen apu in this thing because it's am4. You could buy one with broken or missing pins.

      After rechecking I am very surprised this is socketted most are not but I reckon probably maybe 1st or 2nd gen Ryzens but not 3 or 5000 series they need a b550, x470 or x570 chipset

    Hi Vince, maybe the issues might be with windows in general, why not try installing Ubuntu 20.04, its free and its will run much faster than windows, Ubuntu is a good way to breathe life into old pcs and maybe somehow the camera and touchscreen might work with a different os, its easy to install, loads of guides online, just put a disk image on a usb and plug it in on boot and it will delete windows and install itself, or you can dual boot both operating systems if you want to keep both

    If you plan on doing more windows pcs in the future, I HIGHLY recommend you download windows media creation tool on your main pc. Any time you go to re-install windows on a device you can use the media creation tool to create a windows 10 bootable flash drive with the latest version of windows and all the drivers that come with windows.
